"Wait!" Riley said putting her hands up. "What's going on here?"
Evelyn turned and smiled at her, "Nice to see you again Bambi."
"I'm Geralyn's daughter, Gaby," Mrs. Kossal spoke up. "And this is my other mother, Evelyn."
Riley scrunched up her face as she had to process it for a few seconds. But then she smiled and opened her mouth real wide.
"Aw," She cheered then turned to me. "Maya, look she's a lesbian too."
"Too?" Evelyn asked, cocking an eyebrow.
Chai grabbed my hand and we raised our interlocking hands to show everyone. I could see Mr. Matthews and Mrs. Matthews, as well as Mom, smiling.
Riley lightly hit Mrs. Kossal's arm, "Yea, so their kids are going to have to have two mommies too."
Chai and I looked at each other awkwardly. But at least Riley was understanding the concept.
Evelyn sat down across from us, "That's amazing."
We all sat down.
"Crazy...I mean Mrs. Rand if you don't mind me asking," I started. "How did she...what happened?"
Her eyes began to water. Mrs. Kossal took her hand.
"She died peacefully in her sleep."
It shook me to my core to see the haunting look on Evelyn's face.
My mind wandered to what it must have been like for her. Waking up to see the person you love, not breathing. And having to lay there, realizing that her spirit was gone. I looked over at Chai, I don't know even if I love her yet. But I would hate to find her dead one morning.
"That's a wonderful idea, Riley." Mrs. Kossal said.
"And I thought Maya and I could do a collage," Chai said. "We were hoping we could get some pictures of her."
"Yes, that would be lovely." Evelyn nodded, turning to me, "I was gotta invite you over...see Jerry left you something"
Everyone looked up with curiosity.
