Chamber of Secrets

Another month came and went. Gryffindor has found themselves on the receiving end of one of the worst prank wars Hogwarts had probably ever seen. The twins and the two old marauders had been giving them hell, and no one was spared. Harry, for his part, was more or less waiting and planning with his wife for something unique.

That, however, was not the essential thing that was happening. It was now the end of May, and Harry was set to have the goblins come and harvest the basilisk. He had sent a letter to the board of governors to inform them of the situation. They had replied to tell him that it was more than satisfactory and that they would like to see the chamber if it wouldn't be too much of an issue. They, however, hadn't heard what the beast was exactly and was under the assumption that it wasn't nearly that threatening. Apparently, Dumbledore had lied to them about the severity of the situation. So, they decided not to inform him of this.

Harry also decided, with Daphne's encouragement, to offer Snape a bit of an olive branch. He provided the man five percent of the creature. At first, he didn't want to, but after he and Daphne talked over some of his past and future encounters, it was decided it would be good to have him owe him a favor.

It was strange sometimes for Harry how his new friends affected his outlook on life. Before he met Daphne he would have never thought to use the beast as bribery towards Snape. He was also really starting to open up. Deep down, he knew it was because he hadn't really ever trusted Ron or Hermione. He had been able to through off the imperius curse in his fourth year. He didn't think that he didn't know the signs of being controlled by the potions but allowed it. He had trusted them even when his gut told him not to. He felt as though he wouldn't have too much of an issue to throw the compulsions off at least long enough to get to Pomfrey.

Harry was laying in bed with Daphne early the morning of the rendering, thinking of all these things, as he held her sleeping form tight. So many things had changed for him this year. Yet they hadn't. He still had five Horcruxes to destroy and a mad man to kill.

To say he wasn't worried about Voldemort coming after Daphne would be a lie. He was terrified of it. It scared him a bit to think how quickly she had wormed her way into his heart. If you had told him in his previous life, he would even befriend a Slytherin. He would have thought you were crazy. But now he couldn't think of anyone else he would want in his arms.

He had meant what he said about Slytherins, not all being bad people. And he had learned that over the last month. He and Daphne didn't go to the common room every night but did make quite a few appearances in the pit. They would sit around the fire with their friends and a few others and laugh and tell jokes. Or they would work on their homework with Millicent and a few others.

Malfoy and his lot had pretty much stayed out of his way. From what Harry had heard, his father had sent him a letter telling him to back off him or else. With Sirius out of prison and their wealth all but gone, he was in a tight spot. The only thing keeping them afloat was a small stipend that they received from the Blacks and a few of his shadier business dealings. If Sirius wanted to, he could Dissolve his marriage due to him being a marked death eater.

Then he began to think of Hagrid. This brought a strange sadness to his heart. Hagrid had been a friend to him for years. He always said that Ron was his first friend, but truthfully it was Hagrid. The man was just so kind and carrying that it belied his size. But ever since he started becoming friends with the three Slytherins, the half-giant had begun to pull away. It all cumulated when he told Harry he had to stop hanging around them. That Dumbledore had told him that it was imperative, and they were tricking him. It had hurt Harry that Hagrid wouldn't believe him on the three snakes. But at the same time, he could understand Hagrid's misgivings on Slytherin house. What with Riddle getting him expelled. And that was all before his resorting.

Now he felt like something more than a friend was taken from him. Hagrid has always been there for him. When he wanted to talk or needed something, Hagrid had been there. It was like he was a big brother that was quite a bit older and more experienced or perhaps the clumsy but well-meaning uncle figure. No matter what he was to Harry in the past, his distrust of Slytherins was deep-seated. With that, along with his loyalty to Dumbledore, Harry couldn't trust him. And it broke his heart a little when he thought of all the times he had gone and laughed and drank tea with the man.

He was still pondering and absentmindedly stroking Daphne's hair when he felt her stir. He watched as her beautiful eyes fluttered open. She glanced around before turning her gorgeous sapphire eyes up to look at him blearily. She gave him a soft sleepy smile. "Mornin, love." She said, clearing her throat.

"Good morning, Sunshine. Did you sleep, ok?" He returned her smile. His thoughts now focused only on the girl in his arms.

"Mmmm. So good." She said, snuggling in closer.

It was a Saturday, so they didn't have classes. Usually, they would just lay there for a time talking about the week or what they would do for the weekend. Their favorite topic had become how to get back at his ex-best friends. She had told him what they had put her through until they had met in the ally, and Harry was livid. He didn't know Daphne until then, but it reminded him of what the Dursley's had done to him. They didn't have a solid plan yet, but they knew it would be in the great hall. Something that didn't seem to subtitle so as no one would suspect a Slytherin. Well, unless they thought it was Malfoy.

Thinking back on his ex-friends, confused Harry. Hermione was looking as though she had gone insane. From what he had heard, she had been yelling at just about everyone for anything. Most of the time, he saw her in the library. She was squirreled away in a corner holding her head in what appeared to be pain. He had decided to go to McGonagall later that day. She may no longer be their head of house, but Dumbles hadn't found anyone willing to take the roll.

Thinking of the old man made him a bit angry. It had become known during the trial for Sirius that he and Remus had become friendly. So apparently, to punish them for going behind his back, he let slip of Remus' condition. Subsequently, he was now out of a job at the end of the term. Sirius was still in Saint Mungos, recovering from his captivity. Harry had talked to Daphne, and they had decided to buy the two men a modest home close to a village by Potter manor. They hadn't told them yet as they wanted it to be a surprise. They had managed to get Remus to come to the manor the evening they got home.

Harry reaches out of the curtains surrounding the bed for his wand. With a tempest, he found it was seven in the morning. They were to meet the others in the entrance hall at eight-thirty. "Daphne, hun, it's time to get around."

"Mmm, I don't wanna." She said, fighting off sleep.

"Now, I thought you wanted to see the chamber, but I suppose I was wrong." Harry teased.

Daphnes' eyes shot open as she realized that it was today, they would be going. Wide awake now, she practically flew from their bed. Leaving a laughing Harry behind. She had been so excited at the thought of finding something down there. They had been discussing the possibilities for two weeks.

Harry got up at a more sedated manner. He barely caught a glimpse of blond hair disappearing into the bathroom. They may be married and sleeping in the same bed, but neither was ready for the other to see them naked. Harry pulled out a few of the old rags that he had kept from the Dursley's. If nothing, they made suitable dirty work clothing.

After getting dressed, they brushed their teeth together, giving each other playful shoves. Harry had asked Dobby to bring them a light breakfast. He did know what it would be like down there and didn't want Daphne to be to sick if it was really gross.

After they ate, they walked arm in arm to the entrance hall. The sight they saw was curious. There in the entrance stood twelve adults of a range of ages. Among them was Daphnes' father. He had been appointed to the board after Lucius had been removed at the end of the last year. They also stood with a dozen goblins, two curse breakers, a few reporters, their three friends, the Weasley twins, and Professor Snape.

They weren't that surprised to find them all here as it was expected. What wasn't expected was seeing the headmaster almost screaming at an indomitable looking woman with a vulture hat. They could only assume it to be Lady Augusta Longbottom. And boy, did she not look pleased to being told off.

"The boy is lying, I tell you! There was never any real danger at this school!" Daphne tensed at his side, but they both stayed quiet and collected. "There is and never has been a Basilisk in this school!"

"Well, headmaster, if that's the case, then there should be no problem with me taking these fine folks for a bit of a tour." Harry drawled from behind the old man, making him whirl around. "I mean, if I'm lying, as you say, then I have wasted a good portion of gold and their precious time. That would be utterly on my self."

"Harry, my boy, what do you think you are doing! I am the headmaster of this school! It is my prerogative and mine alone to decide what happens in this school!" He had now officially turned his ire onto Harry, but it didn't have the desired effect. Once again, he underestimated the boy.

"Actually, sir, it is not the headmaster's choice. As I am sure you know, the board has the final say in all things that go on here in the grand scheme of it all. You, sir, only have the day to day running of the school. As such, I approached the board to inform them of me claiming what is mine by conquest." Harry stood there looking almost board, much to the others' amusement. It wasn't every day they watched a thirteen-year-old give Albus Dumbledore a talking to. "As I said, it is my right by conquest, so me even doing that was only a courtesy. Now, if you don't mind, sir, I believe that we have business to attended. This way, everyone."

Harry simply turned with a softly smiling Daphne and began leading the way to the second floor. Behind them, they heard a few chuckles and whispers. That is until they heard Lady Longbottom say almost sweetly, "Albus, I believe the board can handle this. Perhaps you can go work on that report on the school brooms we asked for two years ago." And with that, they left a silently fuming headmaster behind.

"Mr. Potter, are you telling us that the entrance to the famed Chamber of Secrets is in the girls' bathroom?" Asked Matthew Greengrass as they approached the bathroom.

Harry stopped for a moment outside the door. "Yes, Mr. Greengrass, that is the entrance, as you will see momentarily. When the chamber was first opened fifty years ago, a young girl died. Her ghost remains in this bathroom. I ask you all to be polite to her as she is… sensitive." They all chuckled a bit, knowing what he meant about the emotional ghost but were also shocked that she was who had died back then.

"Oooohhh, hello, Harry. Did you finally come to join me in my toilet?" Asked Myrtle as they entered.

"Ah, no, Myrtle, I don't think so. I ah don't plan on dying anytime soon. Though ah, thanks for the offer." He was blushing a bit from Daphnes' look she was giving him. He walked to the sink with the snakes and hissed into it. He had thought he would have lost his Parseltongue with the loss of the piece of Riddle, but he hadn't. He wasn't sure what that meant, but at the moment, it wasn't that important.

He made a split decision to try and see if there were stairs. Sure enough, a set of winding stairs wide enough for only one person to stand on a step sprang from the walls. Harry had thought it odd that Slytherin would want to slide down a pipe in a girls' bathroom. It looks like he was right, if only he had thought of that last time.

They made their way in stunned silence to the cave in. The adults hadn't quite believed that this was all real. Now though, they didn't have a choice. Here they were walking through a tunnel opened by Parseltongue. Their nerves became a bit strained when they passed the shed skin. This was not going to be pretty. The twins were now extremely frayed as it had been their sister that had been taken down there. One of the denial board members seen their distress and put a hand on either twins' shoulders in comfort.

They had to wait for the goblins to move the cave-in, but it didn't take long. Apparently, they were excellent at digging. They had it completely cleared, and the roof stabilized in only ten minutes. As they finished up, the group moved on, Daphne clinging to his arm tightly. She was excited to see the chamber but nervous at what the basilisk would look like. He had told her the story, but hearing isn't always believing.

They finally came to the last door. The snakes were there and began to move when he hissed. The group, as a whole, collectively held their breath. This was the moment of truth. Had this boy, no this young man, killed a giant basilisk? The board as a group had been discussing what they would do if it were true. They had thought initially to boot Albus but didn't think they really could. He hadn't actually done anything wrong. He did lie about the severity of the situation, but he had told them of it and that it had been taken care of. They decided, in the end, that he be under more scrutiny, especially when it came to who he hired and any oddity's in the school. And no more would he simply be allowed to handle a situation on his own. From then on, the DMLE would be put in charge of things that involved the safety of students. If there were a Basilisks corpse behind that door, Hogwarts would be quite different come the next term. They couldn't stop the Triwizard tournament that Albus had gotten through the Ministry. He had convinced them it would be fine. Now, however, they were having their doubts on his definition of fine. They couldn't change that, but they change other things in this school to make it safer.

They watched as the door slowly swung out. The misty sent of a room long-sealed came drifting to them. They slowly made their way into the fabled Chamber of Secrets. Torches lit the way revealing the snakehead statues. They walked forward until the sight before them made all but Harry pale. Daphne suddenly threw her arms around him and seeped quietly into his chest. She knew he had been bitten and at the time didn't know if she fully believed that but seeing the beast before her, opened her eyes to how close they had come to never being together.

It was a surprising voice that silkily spoke up with the most emotion anyone had ever heard from the man. That emotion was a bit of fear, and a hint of awe made all turn to stare at the man. "Bloody hell, Potter!"
