At home

Sally had a short day at work and was home by 1 o'clock. That gave her plenty of time to do something special for the kids.

During quarantine, her kids had been stuck inside and had nothing to do. The city council said it would be safe to go outside as long as you wore a face mask. And her kids didn't have face masks.

"Thanks, Mom." She said to her mother, who set up her sewing machine on the table.

Rose, who came to visit to help her make masks, said "Anytime, dear. You know I'll do anything for my grandbabies."

"Look at all this fabric!" Sally said as she looked at the shopping bags of fabric with different designs.

Red, blue, yellow, green, purple, orange, floral, polka-dot, stripes, rainbow, grey, white, cloudy, peacock, snowflakes, teddy bears, ducks, cookies, hearts, ponies, princesses, honeycomb, nuts, stars, jewels, butterflies, crowns, puppies and kitties, and even some bugs were part of the designs on the fabric.

Her mother even brought some fabric markers, elastic bands, and tubes of glitter glue.

"Let's get started." Sally said.

"My 12 oldest girls, report to the kitchen!"

Within a minute, all 12 of her oldest daughters came in.

"I want all of you to pick out fabric for your new face masks. You all get 2 masks a piece. Go ahead."

The 12 girls looked through the various fabric and decided on what they wanted. Sally saw that Harley got a fabric that had texting lingo on it: LOL, SMH, TTYL, IDK and IDC.

Hannah chose one that was a snowflake design. Easy and simple.

Henrietta chose one made with math equations.

Sally's mom really did know her granddaughters.

Once the measurements of each girl was taken, Sally and her mom got to work making masks.

After each one was done, Sally took a fabric pen and wrote the respective daughter to prevent stealing or fighting.

"One group down, 9 more to go."

12 daughters at a time, Sally and Rose made masks for each girl.

Holly and Hilda decided on a pink and blue fabric with purple butterflies on them. As Sally wrote their names down, she said "I don't want to hear either one of you complaining that the other stole your mask. Got it?"

The twins nodded. But Sally knew that would happen anyway.

Hildegard chose a fabric that was teal and had yellow and purple stars.

Honey chose a fabric that was yellow and had orange, light brown and light red colored hexagons in a honeycomb texture. Her other option was a yellow fabric with little cartoon bees, so she chose that for her 2nd mask.

Hazel wasn't one to get excited, but after her grandma made her a mask with a brown fabric that had a hazelnut design, her grandma brought how a yard of fabric that was designed to look like a ouija board. Hazel almost screamed like a 12 year old girl who saw a member of a boyband in public.

"I knew you would like it. Maybe grandma can make you a mattress cover with this fabric?" The red-haired, pink-furred granny asked.

Hazel nodded.

Sally piped up. "What do you say?" An eyebrow was raised.

"Thank you, grandma!" Hazel said as she ran off with a sample of the fabric.

As soon as the kitchen was empty, Sally looked at her mom. "Mother!"

Rose pretended not to know what just happened. "What, dear?"

"Can you go one day without spoiling my girls?" Sally asked.

Rose smirked. "Let me think. No!"

Sally rolled her eyes and continued to sew.

Sally wrote all 96 daughters names on the masks. She counted to make sure she didn't miss anyone.

"Oh, shoot! JoJo! Bring your brother!"

JoJo carried the sleeping baby to his mom.

"Perfect." Sally whispered as she picked up her little one.

Since J. J. was asleep, it would be easy to take his measurements.

Sally gently wrapped the measuring tape around her baby's face and measured the cloth.

Since J. J. couldn't decide what kind of fabric he wanted, she asked JoJo.

JoJo looked at his choices. He looked at J. J., then at the fabric.

Choose wisely.

JoJo pointed to a fabric that was blue and had a design of little footballs, baseballs, soccer balls and basketballs.

"Aww, that will look so cute on J. J." Sally said.

"And what fabric do you want, JoJo?" Grandma Rose asked.

JoJo looked. Not a lot of choices, but he did see some fabric that was very similar to his fur. A white and black fabric that was striped.

Sally and her mom got to work.

Before long, there was 98 pairs of masks ready for her kids to wear.

Sally never wanted to see another scrap of fabric again.
