Chapter 23: VIOLET P. After snapping Lovegood's stick a couple of days ago, I have lied low. But, tonight, I am going to spy on Mary P.'s "encampment" and map out how to steal some supplies and food. The only things I've had to eat so far were my self-scavenged edible plants which I had learned in the training center. I also had some jerky and a jug of water from two days ago which I had gotten from a sponsor. I know what you are thinking - who would want to support me? I'm the youngest of the group, and didn't get a good training score. I didn't think I'd survive the first day. But, here I am, the final three. Looking back, I realize that I haven't seen too many sponsor parachutes this year. Or am I just so far away from other tributes that I can't see their sponsor gifts? Thinking it's time to get some more help, I decide to make a show for the bored rich capitol audience. What should I do for them? I wonder. The next 30 minutes I spend prepping a 'show' to get supplies from my sponsors like a circus dog begging for treats. Then, I rethink. This makes me sick. We have stooped so low, like animals, that now we have to entertain some stupid rich people to live. No way am I performing for them. Now that I made that decision, I have to find food by myself out here. I start walking around, just searching for any telltale signs of animals or water. Maybe some wet sand, strong-looking plants, or animal prints. I'm so parched, and I'm getting desperate for water. After about an hour, I see footprints in the sand! I run alongside the footprints and grow in excitement as I go on. In 100 feet, I see a ring of cacti, and in them, something sparkling and blue. I speed up, wishing for it to be water, but trying not raise my expectations unnecessarily. Two feet away from the circle, I halt suddenly. Lovegood. Luna Lovegood is asleep on her back on a patch of desert 'grass', blond hair spread out like the sun's rays come out of her head. What should I do? I wonder. Am I supposed to eliminate her from the games? I can't. I won't. Abruptly, Luna's eyes open. The blue/grey of her eyes sparkle like the water in the pond. Wait, water? There's water - I was so distracted by her that I didn't even realize the mini pond, stationed right behind the ring of cacti, hidden from outside sight. Back to Luna. We stare at each other for about 15 seconds, each going through the same thought process. To kill? To injure? To run as far away from her as possible? Does she have weapons? Will she hurt me? Then, we both laugh. I am laughing because I thought for one second that she would kill me. I don't know what I was thinking - she's a Lovegood. Quickly, I fill up my empty water canteen. Thinking about all of the possible bacteria that is in the water (I'll purify it later) takes another 15 seconds, then Luna and I simultaneously turn our backs to each other. I am about to sprint, when I hear her. "I enjoyed meeting you. It is like I have a real friend in the arena." She says. What?! If I were to write a list of words that describe me and Luna's relationship, "friend" would be dead last. I turn back to Loony to give her an odd glance, but then her words sink in. Instead, I smile widely. She really grew on me, I think as I run away. In my peripheral vision, I see her turn towards a bird on the nearby cactus, starting up a conversation. Okay. She's back to weird.
