A/N: I'm back! Hi! I hope you all had a good vacation. I was able to come up with some ideas while gone and I'm hoping I can do them justice. Anyways, back to the story!

"Did you say no?"

"I…I'm fine."

"Hailey…the door's locked. Hey, let me in."

"I'm fine, Jay."

"I'm worried about you."

"I need space."

"Hails."

"Please, please, I need space."

Hailey breathed shakily and opened her car door. She sat in the driver's seat and rested her head on the steering wheel. She wasn't pregnant. She hadn't been pregnant. Her body was just confused from skipping birth control and she should be back to normal within the next month.

Normal.

When the doctor said that, it stung. She used to crave normalcy in her own life. Work was crazy enough that sometimes going home and sitting with Jay on the couch to watch SNL and The Office reruns was all she ever wanted to do, but then Drew came along and she liked having him 'mess' up her normal. He made their life exciting and fun and even more fulfilling and now she was craving more of that.

Her phone rang and automatically connected to the Bluetooth of her car. She glanced up and saw Jay's name flash across the screen.

Smiling a little, she pressed the green button, "Hey."

"Hey, you done yet?" Jay asked.

"Yeah," Hailey wiped under her eyes, "All good."

"It wasn't the flu then?"

Hailey swallowed, knowing full well that if Jay were here he'd be able to see right through her, but he wasn't and had to rely just on her voice, "Nope, probably just food poisoning."

"Based on what you described, I'm taking food poisoning off the table. Your hormones were – for lack of a better phrase – out of whack which is probably what caused the nauseas."

"That sucks, but hey, at least Drew can't get that," Jay said.

Hailey nodded, "Yeah, definitely."

"I talked to Voight, he said you don't have to come back," Jay continued, "But I wouldn't be mad if you picked me up lunch."

Hailey rubbed her face, "Actually, I want to go home."

"You-what?" Jay asked.

"I'm taking the rest of the day off," Hailey said, "Voight said I could take it if I needed to and I need to."

She chewed her lip, waiting for Jay's response, but he was quiet on the other end of the phone until finally saying, "Okay, then…you want to pick up Drew or-"

"Can you?" Hailey interrupted.

"Y-Yeah. Are you okay?" Jay said softly, "I'm worried-"

"Have a good day at work, save Chicago," Hailey ended the call. She breathed deeply and covered her face with her hands before driving home and burying herself under her old navy comforter she saved for moods like this.

Jay nearly blew a red light for the third time that day when Kim finally snapped, "Pull over."

He closed his eyes for a second, then drove to the nearest parking lot.

"Get out of the damn car," Kim said while jumping down. Jay tilted his head back against the headrest. Kim pounded her hand against his window, "Now, Halstead."

Jay sighed and opened the door, stepping out just to have Kim push past him and sit in the driver's seat. As he walked around to get in the passenger side, he ignored Kim's comments and threats to Hank for partnering her with him for the day.

"You're an idiot, you know that?" Kim yelled once she adjusted the seat and had started driving, "Screw your head on straight, you're gonna get us killed. I just got engaged, I'm not going to have a moron like you ruin it for me."

"Sorry," Jay mumbled and looked out the window.

"You're so emotional," Kim breathed.

"Would you shut up?" Jay finally yelled back.

"Oh don't raise your voice to me," Kim laughed.

"Stop yelling at me," Jay said.

"Stop making stupid decisions," Kim glanced at him.

Jay groaned loudly and grabbed his radio, "I need a new partner."

"That was low," Kim reached over and took the radio from him, "Ignore Halstead."

"Knock it off," Jay pulled it back, "I want a new partner."

Kim turned and smacked his arm, "You're acting like a child."

"You're a child and as your superior, I'm going to report you," Jay snapped.

Kim rolled her eyes, "You sound like such a dick saying that. Really, Jay? My superior? We've known each other for years and you're going to pull that jack-ass card on me?"

"I out rank you," Jay said before turning the radio back on, "Where can we meet to switch drivers?"

Kim opened her mouth to reply, but her eyes widened at the car coming straight at them through an intersection.

"Kim!" Jay lunged over and grabbed the steering wheel.

Kim stepped on the gas and sent Jay's truck straight into a mailbox, narrowly avoiding the other car, slamming on the breaks and jerking both her and Jay forward against their seatbelts.

They both sat stunned for a minute, hearing the screams outside and people knocking against their windows asking if they were okay. That was until they came back into realization of what had just happened.

"You are so stupid!"

"My truck!"

"I can't even look at you right now!"

"Have you ever even driven a car before?"

"You're more worried about your truck than me? Look at my neck!"

"God damn Kim!"

There was a loud pounding on Jay's window and they both turned to see Adam.

Jay unlocked the door only to have Adam open the door and yank him out, shoving him against the brick wall, "Who the hell do you think you are?"

"Hey! Hey!" Kevin ran to them and pulled Adam away.

"He almost killed Kim!" Adam yelled.

"I wasn't driving!" Jay shoved Adam back.

"Enough!" Kevin wedged himself between the two of them.

Hank walked over and looked at Jay, "One week suspension."

Jay's jaw dropped, "You're joking."

"I want to hear nothing out of your mouth," Hank yelled, "You and Burgess were reckless and stupid. Neither one of you are stepping into the district for a week. Go see Brett then get out while I clean your mess up."

"Let's go," Kevin pulled Jay away before he could reply.

Jay glanced at Kim sitting on the edge of the other ambulance as Kevin walked him toward Sylvie, "I…"

"You good?" Kevin turned him and looked him in the eyes, "What's happening?"

Jay shook his head and let Kevin lightly push him to sit down.

"Did you hit your head?" Sylvie asked and helped Kevin get Jay's bulletproof vest off.

Jay swallowed and turned to look back at Kim.

"Jay," Sylvie carefully pulled at his shirt to look at his neck, "What hurts?"

Kevin winced, "Wow, that seatbelt really got you. Want me to call Hailey?"

Jay blinked and looked up at him, "No. She-she's going through something right now."

Kevin nodded, "All right, not a problem. I can drive you home."

"I got it," Vanessa said as she walked over, "You should go talk Adam down now, though."

Kevin looked over at Hank yelling at Adam and nodded, "I can do that," he lightly hit Jay's shoulder, "Text me," he jogged over to Adam.

"This might sting," Sylvie said softly and put cream on Jay's burn.

"Whoa!" Jay pulled away.

Vanessa sat next to him, "Need anything from me?"

Jay gritted his teeth and shook his head, still trying to avoid Sylvie.

"Sorry," Sylvie breathed and held him still.

Vanessa waited for Sylvie to leave and walk over to Kim before saying quietly, "A lot on your mind?"

Jay glared at her, "Kind of want to be alone right now."

"You think I don't know what's going on with Hailey?" Vanessa asked.

Jay softened, "What?"

"I know she's going through a lot and she's stressed and I'm assuming she's taking it out on you," Vanessa said, "But you could have killed yourself and Kim today, you realize that? Whether or not you were the driver, you are both to blame."

Jay ignored her comments and asked, "What's going on with Hailey?"

Vanessa raised her eyebrows, "That's for her to tell you, not me, but you two need to talk."

Jay scoffed, "She doesn't even want to talk to me. She pretty much hung up on me earlier."

"Like I said, she's going through a lot, Jay, she needs you," Vanessa said softly.

Jay nodded slightly and stood, "Drive me?"

"Are you good here?" Vanessa asked and stood as well.

"I really don't care," Jay said while grabbing his vest.

"Fine by me," Vanessa sighed and led the way to her car.

Hailey heard the front door open and glanced at the clock. Jay shouldn't be home for another three hours. She ran through her memory, trying to remember if she locked it when she came home.

She heard footsteps coming up the stairs and dove out of bed toward the closet. She quickly grabbed her gun and had it pointed at the bedroom door.

Jay walked in the room, "Hails?"

"Oh my god," Hailey breathed and dropped her arms.

"What the hell?" Jay laughed.

"I didn't know you'd be coming home," Hailey turned and put her gun back in the safe.

"Medically discharged and suspended," Jay rolled his eyes and walked past her to put his own gun away.

"What?" Hailey spun him around, "Jay!" her fingers ghosted over the burn.

Jay winced, "Don't touch it."

"Sorry," Hailey breathed and walked with him to the bed, "Can you please explain though?" she sat on the bed and pulled her navy comforter over her.

Jay raised his eyebrows at the blanket, "What's wrong? Why'd you pull that out?"

Hailey blushed, "Jay."

"We clearly have a lot to talk about," Jay shook his head.

"Clearly," Hailey breathed.

"And you're going first," Jay said.

"You're injured," Hailey took his hands, "So at least explain that first."

Jay bit his lip, "Fine. Uh," he scratched the back of his neck, "Kim and I got in a fight while driving and she crashed my truck – well, I kinda had something to do with that. Voight suspended us for the week though."

Hailey shook her head, not quite sure what to say.

"Not a great day," Jay mumbled and played with Hailey's fingers.

Hailey nodded, "I…"

"I messed up, clearly," Jay said quietly, "But, honestly, I was distracted thinking about you and what's been going on. It's not an excuse and I'm not blaming you, I'm just trying to explain."

Hailey breathed deeply, "I understand." She got out of bed and walked to the bathroom. She came back with the box of pregnancy tests and handed them to him.

Jay stared at the box, "What does this mean?"

"I'm not pregnant," Hailey whispered, "I thought I was, but I'm not. I just screwed up my birth control." Her hands were shaking, so she shoved them under the blanket.

Jay swallowed and looked up, "Was this yesterday?"

"I took it yesterday," Hailey chewed her lip, "And my doctor confirmed today."

"So it wasn't food poisoning?" Jay asked, "Or was it?"

"Just hormones," Hailey breathed, "I-I'm sorry for lying, I didn't…I-"

Jay shook his head and hugged her tightly, "I'm sorry you went through this alone."

Hailey held onto his shirt, "I'm sorry I caused you to wreck your truck."

Jay laughed weakly, "Technically it was Kim behind the wheel, but what does it matter?"

Hailey pulled back, "We're kind of a mess."

Jay smirked, "I'd agree with that."

Hailey pulled at her blanket and curled up on the mattress again.

Jay laid next to her and held her to his chest, "I'm guessing you wanted to be pregnant."

Hailey smiled slightly, "You know me so well."

Jay kissed the top of her head, "It'll happen when it's meant to, right?"

"I just got really excited," Hailey whispered.

"I know," Jay squeezed her, "I'm sorry."

"We would have been stressed beyond imagine and who knows what Drew would have thought, not to mention we're trying to adopt him," Hailey said, "But we would have been really good parents."

Jay nodded and ran his fingers through her hair.

Hailey pressed her face into Jay's chest, "It sucks."

"I know," Jay repeated. He wrapped the blanket around her more and rubbed her back, "I'm here for you, always."

"Thank you," Hailey breathed.

Jay nodded again and played with her hair, "Take all the time you need."

A few hours later, Jay texted Will asking him to pick up Drew and bring him home. Will didn't question it, having heard about Jay's accident from a paramedic in the ED earlier, so he left work to go get Drew.

The car wasn't even in park when Drew ran outside and quickly got in Will's car, "I hate my life."

"What?" Will turned around, "What happened?"

"Drive," Drew's lip wavered and he shakily put his seatbelt on.

"Drew," Will said softly.

"Drive me away," Drew cried, "It's the worst day of my life."

"Bud," Will whispered.

"I want to go away," Drew cried harder and kicked his legs against the seat.

"Okay, okay," Will quickly drove onto the road.

Drew continued crying loudly in the backseat. Will kept his eyes on him as he drove to Jay and Hailey's house. Once he pulled into the driveway, Drew started yelling, "No, no, you can't take me here."

"What are you talking about?" Will asked and got out of the car, "I brought you home."

Drew unbuckled his seatbelt and crawled away from Will on the seat, "No, don't. I can't go in there."

Will opened the backdoor, "Why? Let's go; your parents are probably wondering where you are."

"I don't," Drew hiccupped, "Have parents."

Will raised his eyebrows, "Drew, I know you've been calling Jay and Hailey your parents."

"I was stupid. I'm a stupid kid," Drew said.

Will sighed and got in the car, "Drew."

"No, no," Drew opened the door and hurried out.

Will groaned, glancing to the house, "Come back."

Drew shook his head, scratching his arms quickly, "No, I don't belong."

The front door opened and Jay walked out, "What's going on?"

Drew cried and sat on the sidewalk.

Will stepped out of the car, "We're not having a good day." He noticed the burn on Jay's neck, "I heard about your bad day too."

Jay rolled his eyes and walked to Drew, "What's going on?" he tried picking him up, but Drew pulled away.

"Don't touch me," Drew said.

Hailey walked out of the house, "Drew?"

"Drew," Jay said softly and sat next to him, "Look here, what's going on?"

"I don't belong," Drew cried into his hands.

"Yes, you do," Jay said and set his hand on Drew's leg.

"Don't touch me!" Drew yelled again.

"Jay," Hailey hurried over, "Let's get him inside."

"He won't let me touch him," Jay whispered.

Hailey knelt down, "Drew, can you stand for me? It's Mom."

"I don't have a mom," Drew cried.

Hailey winced, "You…Drew, please, we want to help."

Will walked over, "Did something happen today?"

Drew looked up at him and nodded; he scratched his arms harder.

Jay's jaw set, "Did someone hurt you?"

Drew shook his head.

"Okay," Hailey hesitantly reached her hand out, "Let's go talk inside."

"I can't, I can't go inside," Drew whimpered.

"Why not?" Jay asked.

"Because I don't belong here," Drew said.

Hailey raised her eyebrows, "Yes, you do, this is your house."

"The other kids said I'm fake," Drew cried quietly.

"You are not fake," Jay stated, "Drew, look at me."

Drew shook his head quickly and covered his face with his hands, "Just get rid of me."

"We are never getting rid of you," Hailey said.

"But you can't love me if we don't share blood," Drew cried, "I tried-I tried saying they were wrong but they called me stupid and said I-I can't call you 'M-Mom' and 'Dad.'"

"That is not true at all," Jay shook his head, "Whoever said that is the stupid one."

"Jay," Hailey whispered.

"They are," Jay said, "I don't want anyone talking to him like that. That is a lie, Drew, we love you."

"But how? Biology says you don't," Drew sobbed.

"Hey," Will sat next to Jay, "Remember how you said I'm smart?"

Jay rolled his eyes, "Seriously, Will?"

"Give me a second," Will breathed.

Drew nodded slightly.

Will smiled, "Well, I went to school and learned a lot about biology. Biology has nothing to do with love, buddy. There are so many experiments about how if someone isn't related to a baby, but they still take care of it, that that baby is much happier than if they hang out with their biological mom who doesn't care about them."

Drew rubbed his eyes, "Really?"

Will nodded, "I'm not a liar."

"So you do love me? I can still live here?" Drew asked.

Jay nodded, "Of course."

"Am I stupid?" Drew whispered.

"Not at all," Hailey said.

"It was a really bad day," Drew whimpered.

"We all had a bad day," Jay smiled sadly.

Drew sniffled and wiped his nose on his arm, "I'm sorry I yelled at you."

"It happens," Jay shrugged.

Drew looked at his arms and his eyes teared up again, "I…"

"No, no," Hailey hesitantly rubbed her thumb under his eye, "We're not mad."

Drew tried standing and stumbled into Jay, "I feel shaky."

Jay nodded and stood, gently lifting Drew up, "You got yourself worked up again."

Will walked in front of him and held the door open, "Want me to check out that seatbelt burn?"

Before Jay could answer, Hailey said, "Yes."

"What happened?" Drew asked quietly and pulled at Jay's shirt.

Jay winced as he sat on the couch, "I – uh – I got in a car accident today."

Drew's eyes widened, "Oh no." He hurried off of Jay's lap and ran to the kitchen.

Will sat on the coffee table and looked at Jay's neck, "God, it really dug into your skin."

"Did you hit your head or anything?" Hailey asked and sat on the arm of the chair.

"No, just this," Jay sighed.

Drew ran back in with an icepack, "Here, I have this."

"I'll try, thank you," Jay smiled a little and hissed while setting the icepack against his skin.

"Does it hurt?" Drew asked.

Jay nodded, "Yeah."

Hailey shook her head and ran her hand down his back, "You are too important to us to get in car accidents."

Jay looked up at her, "I'm sorry."

Hailey sighed and hugged his side to her. She kissed the top of his head and closed her eyes.

"Why'd you have a bad day?" Drew asked her.

Will nodded and raised his eyebrows.

"Are you still sick?" Drew held her hand.

Hailey looked at Jay and chewed her lip.

"Yes," Jay said, "She's still not feeling great."

Hailey slowly nodded, "My stomach is bothering me."

Drew ran back to the kitchen and came back with a glass of water, "Try water."

Hailey smiled slightly, "You really are the nicest."

Drew blushed, "And you promise it's okay that we don't share blood?"

"Absolutely," Hailey said softly and poked his nose.

Jay smiled, "We don't want anyone else but you."

Drew rubbed his eyes, "Thank you."

"You're welcome," Hailey kissed his forehead.

"Yeah, I'm really sorry."

Hailey smiled slightly and sat back on the bed to watch Jay pace the room while talking to Kim on the phone.

Jay ran a hand through his hair, "No, you were right, I was being emotional." He sighed, "No, you don't have to pay. I talked to insurance and Platt, it'll work out."

Hailey pulled the blankets over her and laid down.

Jay chuckled, "Yeah, we can do that. Okay, I'll see you then…Wait, no, I-" he winced and held the phone from his ear.

Hailey could faintly hear Adam yelling on the other end of the phone, "Jay," she whispered, "Give me the phone."

He happily passed it to her and sat on the mattress.

"Calm down," Hailey snapped into the phone, "You think Kim was the only one in danger? I almost lost my husband, so shut up."

"He wouldn't have died," Adam argued.

"Then stop acting like Kim would have," Hailey said, "We are having a rough day over here and we do not need you yelling and ruining our night."

Adam sighed, "Fine, fine, whatever."

"Thank you," Hailey breathed, "Goodnight."

"Night, Hailey," Adam hung up the phone.

Hailey passed Jay back his phone, "Done."

"Thanks," Jay set it on his nightstand.

Hailey tilted his head up and sighed, "It looks awful."

"It's painful," Jay mumbled.

Hailey shook her head and hugged him tightly, "What'd you plan with Kim?"

Jay chuckled, "She invited Drew and I to a picnic lunch tomorrow. Figured since we're both suspended that we can take advantage of that."

Hailey smiled, "That'll be good, but please remember to constantly reassure him that we love him."

"I will," Jay nodded.

"I hate that kids messed with him," Hailey sighed and turned to stare up at the ceiling, "He doesn't deserve that."

"If I ever see the kids that make fun of him, I will destroy them," Jay said.

"Stop," Hailey lightly shoved him, "Don't say that."

"I will not let anyone hurt him in any way," Jay shrugged, "I don't care."

Hailey rolled her eyes, "Just don't do anything stupid."

"Kind of crossed the stupid line earlier already," Jay said quietly.

Hailey couldn't help but laugh and squeeze his hand, "Yeah, you kind of did," she turned on her side, "And if I ever hear that you're messing around in the car again while driving, I will kill you myself."

Jay smirked, "You're pretty cute when you're threatening me."

Hailey rolled her eyes and kissed him softly, "I was serious earlier, you mean everything to me, do not put yourself in dangerous situations like that again."

"I'll try," Jay said quietly, "I can't promise though."

Hailey sighed and closed her eyes, "I know."

Jay held her close, "We'll be okay."

Hailey nodded and held onto his shirt.

Jay winced and pulled away, "Watch the burn."

"Sorry," Hailey breathed and looked at it.

Jay tried to smile, "Not a problem."
