Paul and Maylene pull up to his apartment. Maylene hasn't found a place to stay yet, so she will be sleeping in Paul's studio for the time being. To prevent suspicion, Maylene still owns her Veilstone City home, and her maid Lana will continue to tell people that she is not home. After the day of the harbor incident, Maylene had given Paul a lot of alcohol to drink while she dug out the bullet from his shoulder. Fortunately, it came out in one piece and she was able to bandage him up nicely. He woke up with a very intense hangover and pain in his right shoulder.
Paul opens the backdoor of the cafe. It's empty since it is the cafe's closing hours before the bar tonight. Dawn had gotten Barry to act as security while calling in Zoey and Kenny to fill in on alternating nights. This is also why Paul was only gone a week. The four of them must be exhausted from the work.
When Maylene and Paul finally bring all their belongings upstairs, Paul offers Maylene his bed while he sleeps on the rug. "No way. It's your bed. And your shoulder needs to lay on something soft." she tells him.
Paul groans. Ghost Reggie would annoy the heck out of him if Maylene took the floor. He looks over at her, "Can you buy an air mattress from the superstore? I'd go but my shoulder is killing me."
"Fine." She responds and grabs his keys. "I'm taking your car though. Mine is out of gas." She leaves and Paul tries to lay on the ground, but Maylene is right. The hard pressure sends a wave of pain through his shoulder, so he quickly sits up. Deciding he can't nap until Maylene is back with a cheap air mattress, he calls Saturn.
"Someone knew!" Paul hisses once Saturn picks up.
"So what are you saying? I told?" Saturn angrily says back.
Annoyed and in pain, Paul lets out a huff. "Only two people knew on my end. That's you and someone else I trust with my life. And that person knows no one else, so it must be someone on your end."
"Are you sure no one else at the casino heard what you were talking about? That's not a very private place." Saturn responds.
"Look! Someone knew we were there. Figure it out." Paul hangs up and then curses himself because he forgot to tell Saturn about the pictures. His phone couldn't catch the voices, so he didn't get good sound recording. Right now, Paul doesn't trust Saturn, though, so maybe he'll hold onto the evidence himself.
Paul scrolls through his stocks and notices they're increasing nicely, especially Galactic Co.'s stock. With Saturn's help for his illegal gambling money, Paul managed to invest that money too. He's currently sitting at $700,000. He makes some trades and then puts his phone away to think.
Who could have told the mob he was there? Only Saturn and Maylene knew, but he was with Maylene from the point he told her. She couldn't and wouldn't have told. She wouldn't try to get her dead boyfriend's brother killed. Well, she did get him arrested, but Paul knows Maylene. She's as righteous and annoying as Reggie.
Although Saturn is untrustworthy, if it were really him, Paul would've been dead by now. Saturn's known when Paul would be in Veilstone. Also, Saturn wants Cyrus's spot in the company. He'd need the pictures Paul got first, so he wouldn't jeopardize his goal like that. As much as Paul doesn't like him, Saturn wouldn't benefit from telling on Paul.
He sighs as he thinks about the last person. Dawn knew about the deal, but she didn't know it was that day. She knew he was gone and it is autumn. She could've put the two together and figured it out. Could Dawn be a spy? That'd explain why she practically gave him this apartment after meeting him for 5 minutes, especially since he was being mean and rude to her. A lot of things make sense if Dawn is the spy.
A knock on the door gets his attention. "You have the key." He annoyedly responds to who he assumes is Maylene.
Keys are jingled and then the door is soon opened. "Welcome back, Paul!" Exclaims a familiarly annoying voice. Before Paul can turn his head, he hears a, "Oh my gosh, Paul! What happened?" And the bluenette is quickly kneeling on the ground next to him.
Keeping his face turned away from her, he says, "I was shot."
"What? How? Are you okay?" she worriedly looks at him.
It can't be her, can it? Paul really doesn't want to believe it, but she's the only one who makes sense. Why would she want to help a mean and rude person like him? She also bothered him a lot in the beginning when he wasn't so nice to her. Dawn even mentioned that Galactic Co. is trying to buy her out. Could it be for a larger sum of money?
"Paul?" her voice breaks his train of thought and he lets out an annoyed breath.
"How did you know I was here?" he calmly asks her.
She gives him a confused look since he ignored her questions. "Uh. I saw your car wasn't here but there was a newer car out there. I assumed you got a new car. And then when I knocked, you answered."
Makes sense. He looks at her and sees those midnight blue eyes full of concern. She has to be the snitch. It's the only way. It'd also explain how she got away from Cyrus that night and why the worst thing that happened to her is a destroyed cafe when she wasn't even there. He closes his eyes in frustration. Paul is stressed, in pain, and exhausted. He cannot do this right now. "Leave." He coldly tells her.
"Why?"
"Just leave."
"Why won't you tell me what's wrong, Paul?" she pleads.
"I said to leave!" He shouts at her while glaring fiercely into her eyes.
"Paul!" Both adults turn their heads to the door where they see Maylene walking in.
Dawn looks between the two and then slowly stands up. As she makes her way out of the door, she faces the pink haired woman. "I'm just his landlord. I'm sorry for disturbing you." She then runs down the stairs and bursts into tears as she hides in the basement storage area.
