Thank you for the reviews.
Now the time jumps start... because we are on the penultimate chapter... and there have been 6 weeks since the last chapter.
But I Love Just You
She had got the letter two weeks after she was found. It took her a week to tell Eddie. It took her another three weeks to decide that she would fulfil the request in the letter.
It was why she found herself, sitting in the visitors' section of Buckley Hall prison, waiting for Danny to be led out.
The letter was in her coat pocket and she almost took it out to read it for the hundredth time. To others, it had seemed like the wrong thing to do. Eddie did but didn't want her to go, especially after she had mentioned the lengths that Danny went to last time she refused to see him. Jane thought that she was mental and Sally had been more supportive, saying that sometimes it helped with closure (which then led to an argument between Jane and Sally about 'closure' and Rachel not needed it if it wasn't for Danny. Which, Rachel found out later, was settled when Sally pulled rank and Rachel wished she never asked what Jane meant by that).
If anything, Rachel did need closure and it was something that was encouraged by the person that she had been talking to about it all. Maybe the man in front of her wasn't going to give her the sort of closure that she was after. Or maybe he could.
"You came?" Danny said once he got himself comfortable.
"I was reminded of the lengths you went to the last time I refused you."
"I wasn't going to go to those lengths again. It was a long shot. I just…"
"You just what?"
"In all honesty, you know now."
"What Danny?"
"That you will never see me again. I don't think I am ever getting out of here."
"Don't think like that."
"Rachel, I am already serving a life sentence for almost shooting you and, as you know, I have pleaded guilty to the first kidnapping and false imprisonment. That will probably be another life sentence."
"Is that what you have been told?"
Danny nodded. "I… I just wanted you to know, no matter how wrong it feels, I won't love anyone else the way I love you and… Eddie is an awfully lucky man to have won your heart. But I love just you. Because there is no one else like you."
She sighed. "Danny, I don't know what you want me to say when you say that."
"Nothing. I just needed to tell you. Not to make you feel guilty or anything like that. Maybe it is just to get it off my chest so that maybe I can try and move on but." He stopped. "I mean, look at Adam. There are guys falling all over you and Eddie is the lucky one of us."
She leant back in the chair and she looked at her cousin. She knew that she didn't know how bad things could be with the family but she knew that everything wasn't all sweet. She knew that snitches got stitches but there was the other part of the family. The sort of loyalty that only went away with death. She assumed that it would have been part of Danny. She had been looking for closure. Maybe this was the way that she was going to get it.
"Do… do you think that you are in the same place as Adam?" She asked.
"I think I've seen him. Why?"
"I don't know whether I should tell you." She said as she leant against the table and he came closer. "But maybe there is a part of me that wants him to feel what I felt."
"When he kidnapped you?"
She shook her head. "When he made me break my marriage vows." She whispered.
Danny looked horrified for a moment before he leant back in the chair and looked thoughtful. Maybe he and Eddie had got on a lot better than she had imagined. Either that or Danny was always going to make it her choice. That maybe she would have been able to wear him down in the end.
"I could… organise something." He said.
"Would that make me as bad as him?"
"No. No never."
"Are you sure?"
"Rachel, you know where we grew up. We grew up around snitches get stitches and if someone comes after one of us, then the family comes together to get one over on them." He paused. "Like… Michelle was bullied in school. I was only in year seven at the time but one day, she had her head pushed down one of the toilets. James went mad and we all ganged up on them. I mean, he said some vile things to them but it stopped after that. Ask Jane, she was there. She actually dragged the leader of the gang in by her hair. When she was one of us."
"Danny, we never stopped being a part of the family. Just because we were no longer welcomed, it didn't mean that they weren't still family. Eddie has questioned us as to why we still call all our aunties and uncles, auntie and uncle. It was how we were brought up."
"Then let me do this for you. For my cousin. It might not have happened if it wasn't for me. Michael is right. I owe it to you."
"I thought you owed me nothing."
"And what right did I have to take you away from your happiness after everything I did."
Her brow creased as she wondered why Danny was saying that to her. Someone had obviously said it to him but she had no idea who. She was running out of time and she knew that she had to give Danny an answer. Would him doing something to Adam make her like them?
She nodded at Danny as the bell went off and she knew by his smile that he knew what her nod meant. He stood up but hesitated before he left.
"Goodbye, Rachel Lawson." He said with a smile.
"Goodbye, Danny Sutton."
She watched him go, thinking that his earlier statement of him never seeing her again was true. And she felt like both of them could let the other one go. That part of her life was completely over.
Rachel had been thinking a lot as she drove back from the prison. It was why she went to Jane's rather than home. Because she had been thinking more about what Danny said about Michelle being bullied in school. Maybe she was one of the last to ask the question but she hadn't yet asked about when Eddie had said that Jane had strangled Danny.
Maybe there was a side to her cousin that she knew but didn't.
"You saw him?" Jane said as Rachel walked into the kitchen.
"I think we can both put everything behind us."
"What do you mean by that?"
"Well, Danny is right. He probably isn't going to get out of prison anytime soon."
Jane looked her up and down. "You've called in a favour."
"Doesn't he owe me?"
"He mentioned Michelle didn't he?"
"Am I the last to know?"
Jane nodded at her. "You must have heard them. 'Well release Jack on them'. I have just about as much to be… not proud of as you."
"You were Jack?"
"Jack Russell. Small but vicious. It was a group of girls in the year below me. Michelle told me that she could handle it until they put her head down one of the loos. James told me and I said that I could point them out. He may have said vile things to them but I was the one to drag the ring leader through the school by her hair. I was the one that picked one of them up, prepared to do to them what they did to Michelle.
"Sally calms me down. Because she reminds me that I don't have to be like that. That the way I was brought up wasn't right. That if someone said jump, I had a right to ask how high and then to think about whether I wanted to jump. If I didn't leave when I did, I would have met Sally because she would have arrested me." Jane paused. "I wish we didn't grow up as we did. I wish that we were as blind to it as Melissa. But you do know what you've done, don't you? That you've called in a favour with Danny."
Rachel gave her a smile. "And like I've said, doesn't Danny owe me? And maybe Adam deserves it."
"What did he do to you?"
"Adam?"
"Yes."
"After Danny's first appearance. You know how broken that made me feel. I know you don't want to hear it but... Me and Eddie... we sort of reconnected in a weird way. I wanted him close again and then we ended up have the best shower sex that I have ever had. It started that side of our relationship again. The next time that I wanted to be close to him again, like that, I was in self-destruct mode and I asked Eddie to… be as rough as he liked with me. I." Rachel stopped herself for a moment. "I wanted to feel worthless and Eddie asked me why I would ask such a thing of him. It was because of that night I unknowingly had with Adam. Eddie obviously wasn't going to, telling me that no one should ever have been rough with me and proceeded to show me how I should have been loved back then."
"Did you ever ask that of anyone else?"
Rachel nodded but had already predicted Jane's next question, hopefully answering it before she asked it. "And yes they did."
"Who the hell do I have to thank for Eddie Lawson?"
Rachel laughed. "When you find out, tell me. Because I need to thank them as well."
"It will get easier Rachel. You know it does."
"Maybe I need to tell my husband that I want him tonight."
"As long as you are comfortable with that."
"I want his love, Jane. It is all I wanted when I was away from him."
"I can only imagine."
"We are better than our past selves." Rachel said. "Sometimes we just need reminding of that."
"Yeah. Well, Melissa will definitely not want to see me any time soon."
"God, what have you done now?" Rachel said as she leant her forearms against the kitchen counter, ready to hear more of what she had missed.
Danny had seen him a couple of times. But he knew that with these sorts of things, taking his time was best. He needed to call in a few favours of his own to make sure that everything did go to plan. If anything, Danny wished that he had hit Adam a little harder when he had the chance. As he said, he was ready to go down for Adam's assault as well as the other charges he was adding to his sentence.
He leant against the wall as one of the wardens walked up to him.
"How much damage are you going to do?" The warden asked.
"He raped my cousin. All she wants is for him to feel some of the pain that she has been though. I am just going to make him feel the physical pain that I am sure she went through mentally. Fucking bastard."
"Just do I need someone to come round in two hours time and find him?"
"Yeah, you probably will."
"Fucks sake Danny. I can't believe I am allowing this."
"I owe it to my cousin. I kidnapped her and in turn, Adam kidnapped her and then raped her. If it wasn't for me, it might not have happened. And I should have never allowed him to have the first night with her all those years ago."
"Danny Sutton, do you have a conscience?"
"What the fuck do you mean by that?"
"I was told that you were a heartless bastard that wouldn't let anything get in the way of what he wanted."
"What if I wanted my cousin?"
"Are you really that fucked up?"
"I suppose I am."
Danny grabbed the key as the warden held it up and took note of the cell that Adam was in. He gave a little salute to one of the other wardens before the place was quiet. He pushed himself off the wall and made his way towards Adam's cell, not planning on wasting any more time, with the others that he had hired to help joined him before he reached the cell door.
If anything, he enjoyed the look of surprise on Adam's face.
"There isn't any point shouting. No one will hear you." Danny said. "Just one quick question, Melissa. Her role? I think I might have worked it out but just to confirm. I'll let Rachel know."
"She was just a distraction," Adam said as he got off the bed.
"Thought so. Now, Adam, this can go either one of two ways, and that depends on your answer to this question. Did you rape Rachel?"
Danny loved the way that the colour drained out of Adam's face and he knew that he was going to have fun.
