Meg was not a murderer on the run when she joined Kida's crew. She had never killed anyone prior to being a pirate, but she could hold her own in a fight.
Meg lived next to Katrina Van Tassel her whole life. Meg and Katrina had been good friends since they were kids. Even back then Katrina had Brom Bones's attention. She had always been beautiful and Brom had always been a type of hero to the other boys at the schoolhouse. Even though Brom could be quite arrogant most of the time, he was genuinely a good guy and cared about Katrina.
When they were teenagers, every man in the village wanted Katrina and she knew it. She was a sweet girl, but she often used her looks to get men to do things for her; mainly small things like getting them to carry her stuff for her or to get free items from the market. One man, Meg couldn't remember his name, mistook Katrina's teasing behavior as genuine interest in him. When she refused him, he decided to "take" her. He attacked her on her way home from school one afternoon. Fortunately, Brom had been nearby and fought the man off. Brom knew other men would try to take advantage of a pretty girl like Katrina, so he decided he was going to teach her how to fight back. He went to her house every day after school and taught her.
Meg had been near Katrina when she was attacked and she had been the one to get Brom for help. The whole situation had scared her. When she found out Brom was teaching Katrina to fight, Meg asked him to teach her, too. He was happy to do it.
It had come in handy as self defense only a couple of times. When her dad was drafted into the war, Meg became angry. She'd take out that anger by going out of her way to start fights with anyone who even looked at her- man or woman.
Her mother worried about her, but didn't know what to do.
When Kida docked in their small village, Meg was angry and bored. Kida hadn't been recruiting for her crew, she was just passing through. But, when Meg heard about a ship with a female captain, she was intrigued. It was well known that women could not sail; it was simply not done. But, here was this woman fighting against what she was told she was allowed to do. And not just any woman: a princess. Meg was in awe of her.
On impulse, Meg approached Kida and asked to join her crew. Kida had been reluctant to let her join, until Meg showed her her combat skills. Seeing her as an advantageous addition to the crew, Kida welcomed her.
Meg's mother had been excited that Meg was going to be working with a real princess.
Meg learned quickly, however, that joining Kida's crew was not at all what she expected.
Meg was the only other woman on board the ship, besides Kida. None of the men dared to go anywhere near Kida, but they thought Meg was fair game. She used the skills Brom taught her to fight off anyone who tried to touch her, but they were persistent.
That is until a rumor circulated around the ship that Meg was a murderess on the run. They all kept their distance after that. Meg was confused about the rumor, but she didn't correct it. Later, Meg learned Gaston had started the rumor to protect her. Prior to that, Meg had very little interaction with Gaston and was surprised to learn he was looking out for her. The way Gaston treated Kida, Meg had assumed he had no respect for women. As more women joined the crew, she learned that was mostly true; except when it came to Meg.
Meg appreciated what Gaston had done for her and for a while he was her only friend on the ship. Kida had always been civil towards Meg, but rarely ever spoke to her. Meg spent a lot of time with Gaston and he became the first man she ever loved. Or thought she loved, anyway. Her feelings for him terrified her since he was engaged to the princess, so she never acted on them.
Gaston was the one who made the move. One night, while they were talking alone, he kissed her. Afterwards, when he realized what he had done, he just left. They didn't address the kiss or even talk to each other until a couple nights later when he kissed her again. This time he wanted more and she gave it to him. She had been naive enough to believe he felt the same way she did. She trusted him and felt comfortable with him, so she completely gave herself to him.
With him being Kida's fiancee, Meg didn't know what would happen next. But, she found out the hard way when Kida recruited more women and Gaston slept with each of them in turn, as well. Meg had been hurt. Brokenhearted, even. She felt betrayed and has hated him ever since. Her feelings for him made what he did bad enough, but the fact that he had been her only friend made it even worse.
Gaston continued to perpetuate the rumor about her and keep an eye on her when it came to the other men, but they were no longer friends. Not for lack of trying on his part, but she iced him out.
It wasn't until Hercules and John joined the crew that Meg had another friend again.
Which was why everything that was happening now was weighing heavily on Meg.
She was gearing up to kill the first man she loved and to punish one of her best friends.
Meg didn't know what she was going to do to John. Not since Gaston used her and tossed her away has she felt so betrayed by someone. It hurt worse coming from John, though.
Meg sat on her desk, with John in a chair in front of her. His hands were tied behind his back. He didn't struggle or say anything; just sat there, glaring at her.
"Why?" she asked him.
"Where's Jim?"
Meg crossed her arms over her chest and gave him a stubborn look in return. "You know you're not going to see him and I'm not going to tell you anything about him until you cooperate."
"I already told you: you know everything."
"About Aladdin and Gaston, yes. But, not why you went behind my back."
John shifted uncomfortably and twisted his hands.
"You're not going to get free, John."
John stopped and glared at her. "I didn't trust you. I knew you'd act out of anger without thinking and I didn't want anything to happen to Aladdin."
"He's a traitor!"
"He's torn. Gaston is his friend, but he doesn't want anything to happen to this crew, either. I was just trying to help."
"You should be helping me. Hercules was your best friend."
John sighed. "Don't you think it would be a good idea to have Aladdin on our side?"
"Aladdin made his choice."
"He gives us an advantage over Gaston. He knows Gaston better than anyone else on this ship and Gaston trusts him."
"He chose Gaston; he's not going to help us."
John slowly shook his head. "Us? You don't care about us. All you care about is killing Gaston. You're leading us on a suicide mission and you don't even care. At least working with Aladdin gives me a shot at protecting this crew. God knows their captain doesn't give a shit. As long as this ends with Gaston dead, it doesn't matter how many of our lives are lost in the process."
"How dare you!"
"Tell me I'm wrong."
Meg glared at him. She couldn't. Not really. "Hercules would have given his life for any one of you, but none of you are willing to do the same."
"He wouldn't have wanted this and you know it! This isn't about Hercules, this is about your own selfish vendetta." John's eyes bore into hers, daring her to lie to him and tell him he was wrong. She didn't say anything. "Gaston is a lot of terrible things, but even he wouldn't sacrifice his crew-"
Meg slapped him. "That's enough," she snarled. "If you say one more word, Jim is going to pay for it."
John leaned forward, pulling his hands in front of him and showing Meg that he had gotten himself free. He stood up and threw the rope at her. "You should have gotten Sinbad to tie the knot."
Meg stood there, stunned for a moment. In fact, she had ordered Sinbad to restrain John, but his feelings for John got in the way and he refused.
John headed for the door. Meg grabbed her gun and aimed it at his back. "Stop!"
John looked at her over his shoulder. "Shoot me, Meg. It's the only way you're going to be able to stop me from going after Jim."
He opened the door and without thinking, Meg pulled the trigger. John fell to the floor, blood rapidly soaking through his shirt. And Meg felt nothing.
