Chapter 23
March 18, 1994
Hogwarts, Scotland
Any respect she had for her Head of House was gone. She stared at Professor Snape as he ate his breakfast, his hair and usual miserable character was back to normal.
She had seen him with the new hair doo. Professor Flitwick had had 'issues' reversing it until after lunch. People silently laughed or talked about it, but no one dared say anything within ear shot of the man. Yesterday he looked ready to give a years' worth of detention if you crossed him. Even Slytherin House had steered clear of the man.
Luna leaned over and took her hand. "Eat. Breakfast will be over soon and Harry said he would walk on the grounds," Luna told her.
"Would you mind if we join you," Neville asked.
"That would be lovely," Luna said with a smile.
"I want to go to the library this morning," Hermione said, sitting very close to Neville.
"Hermione, let's just take a break for a little while. When was the last time you went outside? Besides going to the Greenhouses or between classes," he asked.
She huffed. "Fine. One hour," she said. "I started my study schedules for exams this week and I do not want to vary from it too much," she told him.
"Those are two and a half months away," Harry said looking at her. He was on the other side of Luna today. His face had been buried in a notebook.
"Last year I waited to start in April because someone said I study too much. I missed getting a perfect one-hundred on my Astronomy and Potions exams. I will not repeat that," she told them.
Astoria looked at her. "Hermione, have I said how much I like you lately?"
Neville shook his head. "Do you have to encourage her?"
"Yes," she said.
"Can we go see the thestrals," Luna asked.
Astoria was not a fan going into the edge of the wood for that, only because she could not see them. Hagrid had shown Luna where they were, and she liked visiting them about every other week.
Neville shrugged. "Fine by me." Hermione was reading her transfiguration book again. "She'll come too," Neville told them.
"Harry," Luna asked.
"I'll go wherever," he said writing in his book.
After a visit to the kitchens, they found themselves under the trees. She shivered every time the slender blonde girl held out her hand and a piece of meat disappeared from it.
Harry had sat in the roots of a tree, still writing in his book. Neville was investigating some strange fungus while Hermione was timidly allowing Luna to guide her to the invisible animals. She could see the ground move or the traces of hooves here and there.
She sat next to Harry. Luna and her had come to some silent agreement to let him do his thing. He had been very upset with Snape and the conversation with Mr. Lupin last night had been a shock for her.
Harry had intentionally used his magic. The batty professor had stolen things from Harry, and most likely sabotaged his potions.
Harry let her sidle up to his side. "What are you writing," she asked him looking over his shoulder.
He stopped and blew on the page. "My notes on how I made the ward stones, your necklaces, the hair pieces and how I think when we do the extra lessons with Uncle Remus. You and Luna say you want to know, it is the best way I can think to do it. Sometimes I don't even understand it until I try to reason it out."
She didn't let her jealousy of what he could do come to the surface. That had been a shock a few weeks ago when she realized part of why she was so competitive with him was she wanted to do what he could do. After last summer and some of what she had seen this year, she felt her parents had deprived her of knowledge she could have had.
Her goal was to make up that gap and to be able to do what Harry, and even Luna, could do at times. If she was to be their friend, maybe more, she would be as useful.
At that thought, the urge to be more than friends, with both of them, came to the forefront. She had pushed it down since Christmas, almost giving into it that day Luna had kissed her again. It was baffling her. She would not stand between Luna and Harry, but Merlin did she like them both.
She moved to be closer to Harry. She liked his warmth.
"Did you get all your tools back," she asked him.
"Most of them," he said with anger on his voice. "I don't want to be in his class anymore, but I don't have an option."
Neville had come closer. "Why don't they fire him," he asked.
"Uncle Remus says he's protected by Dumbledore."
"That is no excuse. He stole your belongings and intentionally sabotaged you," she said, her own fury at the man coming out.
He closed his eyes. "He has never given me a grade below what I deserve. I want to know what his punishment is if they are not going to fire him."
"Does your mother know," Neville asked. "The man has been nasty since the first day I got here."
"I sent Hedwig home with a letter this morning. Uncle Remus said she has an appointment with Dumbledore this afternoon."
She put her head on his shoulder. Luna walked up to them and crouched down. Her kneazel trotted out of the wood to them. "Hello, Eira. Harry, we will just avoid Professor Snape as much as possible."
"I'll try. When you are ready, I want to go back up to the castle," he told her.
The kneazel wove between them as they started towards the castle. Crookshanks joined them shortly after.

Luna grinned as she ate her corn beef sandwich. It was made like she liked with thick cuts of tomatoes, pickles and some mustard. Today was a day to pay attention. Marietta already had a flower sprouting from her head and her friends were laughing with her.
"Why is he looking at you again," Harry asked looking over her shoulder.
Astoria didn't look up, but she felt her displeasure. "Can we drop it," Astoria said.
"No. Malfoy has been bothering you for weeks and you won't tell us why," Harry responded.
"I don't want to talk about it," she said.
Luna looked at her. Her thoughts were not fuzzy, but they were bothered. It was something that bothered Luna.
"Then tell Uncle Remus."
"Harry, I don't want to talk about it."
She put a hand on Astoria's arm. "Little Aster, he is concerned. I am concerned. Would you tell us if we take a walk?"
Her hazel eyes looked at Harry. "I won't have you getting in trouble."
Harry's eyes narrowed. "Trouble for what?"
"Nothing."
"Astoria, plea..." There was a sudden flash and Harry vanished into a cloud of smoke.
"Harry," Astoria screamed.
Luna chuckled as his hair was suddenly canary yellow and when he went to talk he sounded like a bird. A moment later, he wasn't the only one as four more people near them had the same issue, though they developed feathers.
"I told you not to eat the pasties," Luna said as he chirped at her.
Astoria tried not to laugh. After a few minutes, his hair faded back to the black she liked and he looked around. More than a dozen Ravenclaws had been affected. When she caught sight of Fred and George, they bowed in their seats to Harry.
"They...cheep... are going to...cheep... it," Harry said.
"I don't know, it was rather an improvement," Astoria said with a smirk.
"Just wait until I find what they used. That ...cheep... not a Zonko's product."
Luna shook her head. "Harry, you won't win," she told him.
He smirked. "What color do you like Luna?"
Astoria eyed him. "Leave me out of this, Potter."
"Sure, Little Aster. I already know your favorite color," she told her.
"Harry, I am serious," Astoria said. Luna knew that was the wrong thing to say.
"Are you going to tell me what has you so riled with Malfoy then," he asked.
"No," she said defiantly.
"Astoria, please," she asked. "This is important to us because it bothers you."
Astoria frowned. "It is better you don't know."
As they talked, Snape walked past them. Harry followed the man with his eyes. They still had not found out his punishment. Mrs. Potter would not say either, but she was furious the day she had visited Dumbledore and left just as furious. Professor Snape was now ignoring Harry in his classes, and just about everywhere else. Luna felt a danger in the man to her Harry.
Harry huffed. "You know, I'm going to go to the library."
He reached for his bag and stood. Astoria looked after him as he left. Harry was upset, but that would not last long. He liked Astoria too much for that.
"Would you take a walk with me?"
"You never have to ask," Luna said happily.
"Is he going to be upset with me for a while?" They walked out onto the grounds.
Luna felt her concern. "Harry can be protective and see's you bothered," Luna said.
Astoria sighed. "That is why I don't want him to know."
She moved in and wrapped an arm around Astoria's. "Is it that bad?
"Malfoy is under the impression that he can boss me around," she said.
"He doesn't like you with Harry and I," Luna stated.
"That is my decision. Daphne and my parents approve. He has no right to tell me what to do," her mate said angrily.
Luna frowned. She could see Harry doing something rash if he thought the witch next to her in trouble. "Will you tell me? I will only tell Harry if we must."
Astoria put a hand over hers. Luna liked that very much. "I will not keep it from you for now on."
"Good. You can take me to the Owelry now and we will say hi to Hedwig," she said to Astoria.
Astoria raised an eyebrow. "That was rather bossy of you."
Luna shrugged. "You need a distraction and I need to send a letter."
As they approached, a tawny owl flew past them. Luna looked at it and stopped to watch the owl fly towards the Forbidden Forest. Something felt off.
"Luna, is everything alright," Astoria asked,
"I don't know that owl, but it came from the owlery."
Astoria looked in the direction of the forest as it disappeared into the trees. "Are you sure?"
"It is not a Hogwarts' owl. We should visit Hedwig," Luna told her.
Astoria pulled her close and kissed her on the forehead. Luna looked at her with a satisfied expression. "Thank you," Astoria said before they walked up the stairs.

Harry wandered up to the top of the stairwell with the other members of the team. It had been a decent practice for a foggy evening. They had skipped dinner to go out to the pitch as soon as the last of them were out of class. "When can you add two to eleven and get one," the raven head asked at the door.
"It's a clock. Add two hours to eleven and you get one in the morning or one in the afternoon," Stretton said.
"Very good," the raven said and the door opened.
Harry would think it rather boring if all they had to do was remember a password. Even as tired as he was, he preferred to puzzle a riddle.
As soon as he walked in, he knew something was wrong. Sue, Cho and Padma were on a couch. Cho was holding Luna.
He bound over to her. "What's wrong," he asked concerned.
"Harry is here, Luna," Padma said kindly. She looked to him. "She received a letter and just broke down."
Luna pulled up, her eyes red and teary. "Harry," she said jumping up, a parchment in her hands. He hugged her as she buried her face in his shoulder. Eira curled around their legs. He looked to the other girls to see if they knew anything. Cho shook her head. Sue and Padma just made faces that they didn't know.
"Shhh," he soothed her, running his hand over her back. "What happened," he asked.
"Buckbeak," she got out.
Harry had a very good feeling what happened. The hearing was today and Hagrid was supposed to let them know what happened. By her reaction, he knew it was not good. "Oh, Luna, I'm so sorry," he said hugging her tighter. She wrapped her arms around his chest.
When the others looked at him, he said, "Professor Hagrid's hippogryph. My guess is his trial didn't go well."
All three of their faces lit with understanding.
"He is going to be executed. June ninth," Luna said sadly.
"I'm so sorry," he said again.
"We're sorry too, Luna," Padma said. She got up and rubbed Luna's back.
"We'll let you have the couch," Sue said getting up.
"Thank you," he said. He sat with her and she curled up into him, her legs across his lap. A few looked at them, but Harry didn't care as he cradled her in his arms.
"Didn't Hermione say we could appeal? I can help you," he told her.
She shook her head. "You are busy enough, Harry." She pulled back. He did not like seeing her this way. "Hermione and I will talk to Hagrid tomorrow."
"I can help," he said.
She shook her head, her blonde hair swirling around her head. "Harry, you already have too much. Neville can help if we need. You need to focus on quidditch, classes and what Mr. Lupin is working on with you."
He frowned. Since his 'display' in the Headmaster's office, the man had taken an interest in him he did not like and Uncle Remus and mum wanted him to control it more. He had been to the Headmaster's office twice with Remus now. Both times the man asked about his classes, probing what he knew. Many times he didn't even realize it until Uncle Remus either called it out or talked to him after.
He didn't want to worry about avoiding the Headmaster. That day had been his first he had consciously controlled his magic without a wand. Problem was, he could only seem to do it by making whole sentences in Latin. That would not work if he needed to do it in a fight.
"Luna, this is important to you though," he said. He would give up something to do what she needed him too.
Luna leaned back into him. "You are important," she said lowly. "Hermione and I will figure this out. Astoria may help too."
"Are you sure," he asked her.
He hugged her as she pulled her legs up and fully sat on his lap. "You have what you need to do. I will take care of the animals." Eira jumped up on the couch and wheedled her way between them. The large kneazle just barely fit in the space between them.
Harry chuckled. "I think Eira wants to take care of you." The grey kneazle started to purr. The vibration went right through him, making him feel warm inside.
"She likes you," Luna said.
Harry laughed. He kissed her on the head. She nuzzled into him.
Harry caught Cho looking at them. He kept his face passive at the smile she was giving them.

May 21, 1994
Hogwarts, England
It was the last game Match of the year. Everyone was excited. Slytherin was currently in first, but Ravenclaw or Gryffindor could pull off a win. Ravenclaw needed 190 points to be ahead of Slytherin. Gryffindor 210 points. Both were easily achievable, and it would most likely be whoever won this game would win the cup.
Harry kept that in mind as he hovered above the pitch. Ginny was opposite him today. They nodded at each other, not really having spoken all year outside of classes. Harry was trying not to hold it against her after Percy had tried to take more points off them last week and tried to get him a detention for today. Harry had run away, holding his laugh in, as the boy's Head of House dressed him down. She had seen the whole thing. Harry had done nothing.
He wasn't sure though it had been because of Ginny or the game today that Percy had done that. If it was for the game, then Percy hadn't been the first one. Davies had made sure he had a guard wherever he went, and even wanted him to avoid Neville and Hermione until the game was over. That was something he refused, considering they were studying with Hermione at least twice a week.
Now, he was going to see how good he was. Ginny was easily looking like the best seeker in the school, having won her first two matches as well. Malfoy hadn't caught a single snitch, but the Slytherin's had played so brutally, they still won against Hufflepuff and tied with Gryffindor first game. If Harry hadn't caught the snitch, Slytherin would be almost untouchable.
"You ready to lose, Potter," Ginny said with a smirk.
"Only in your dreams," he mouthed back. He was finding he was liking the trash talk in this position.
"Ha," she gave a single laugh.
The whistle blew and he waited for the quaffle to be released. When it was, he pulled straight up and leveled out, making a slow circuit around the pitch. Ginny was on a Cleansweep Seven. Something her big brother Bill had given her when she made the team.
Harry knew it was faster than his father's six, but not as fast as the Nimbus 2001. He had seen Ginny though. She was an acrobat on the broom, fast and as fearless as he was. She was also not afraid to play dirty.
That became apparent about twenty minutes in when she cut in front of him, hitting his broom as she dove towards the ground. For once, he found himself uncertain. He had just scanned that area, and had seen nothing. Going on a whim she was bluffing, he took off for the other end of the field. Midway, he caught site of a golden orb.
He looked at the scoreboard. It was only forty to thirty. Way too early to go after it, but Ginny came screaming up the field below him. He had no choice. He rolled to his side and took off. The thing sped away towards the Gryffindor goal posts. Ginny pulled up and hit him hard as he tried to speed past her.
"Going soft, Potter," she said as they both concentrated and bumped each other. He was trying to keep her from it but not catch it himself, so he forced them to the left, the side she was on.
"I was taught not to hit a girl," he retorted, having no issues bumping her as hard as she bumped him. He even got an elbow in to force her more to the left and keeping her from ducking low
Ginny laughed as she pulled up. They had lost the snitch.
After dodging a bludger or two and Johnson racing up the side, he leveled off, Ginny not far away. They both were looking for the snitch on the sunny spring morning.
"I missed playing with you at the Burrow over Easter," she said.
They had all stayed at Hogwarts this year, using the week to get ahead in their studies and spend time on the assignments his mum gave them.
He looked the other way as Ginny was looking. "Luna misses you."
She frowned. "I miss her too."
They drifted around for a few, doing a lazy pattern. He was sure her instructions were the same as his. Not until they would be more than 210 points up. The game below had heated up, and both sides were getting frustrated. It was only sixty to seventy after almost two hours. The score was enough for them to catch the snitch, but not the clear victory either team wanted over Slytherin.
"You can come over this summer," Harry offered as he drifted close to her again.
She shook her head. "I think it best I stay away." He heard the pain in her voice.
"Suit yourself. Ginny," he yelled out as she took off. Just by the way she had set her shoulders, he knew she had seen it. He was a second behind her, accelerating to catch her and trying to find the snitch. He quickly decided it was not in front of them, so he took a sudden left, well above the ground.
His instincts had been right, as he saw the thing racing along the wall. "George," Ginny cried out. He rolled, knowing the accuracy of the twins. The bludger just missed him. He saw the second one out of the corner of his eye and dipped down.
Ginny used the distraction to gain on him. The snitch was flying as fast as it could, inches from the wall, and racing towards the Ravenclaw side of the pitch. "Potter," he heard Davies. It was enough for him to suddenly pull up as both bludgers just missed him from behind. It cost him more time though. Ginny was on the inside now, against the wall as he pulled up to her.
"Give up, Potter," she growled nudging him.
"Never," he said, his concentration on the snitch and what was going on around them. They raced along wall, around the goal posts and Harry suddenly jerked up. The first bludger caught his foot. The other ploughed into Ginny's side. She hit the wall and screamed. Harry pushed forward, pulling ahead. He felt something grab his broom and a moment later, the whistle blew.
"Blagging. Gryffindor Seeker," Madame Hooch cried out. The snitch continued on as they had to end the chase.
Ginny was holding her side and Fred looked a little guiltily at her as they flew up.
Harry shook his foot. He was upset with her for grabbing his broom, but he didn't like to see people hurt. "You alright," he asked as they started to look again.
"I'll survive," she said.
He nodded and moved to the Ravenclaw side as the foul shot was taken. It was now tied at seventy. If they tied, Ravenclaw would win, having gotten twenty more points in the season. Ginny understood and was staying annoyingly at his side as the search took on a new urgency. So far, Gryffindor was playing a little better than his Raven's.
"Give up now and I'll have the twins give you a gift bag," Ginny told him.
Harry laughed. There was a sudden glint in the middle of the field. Harry took off after it. He had to take any chance he could. "Merlin, Harry," she said angrily behind him. It was in the middle of the pitch, twenty feet off the ground and the chasers from both sides were heading down the pitch.
"George," someone cried out. He was tuning out Lee Jordan.
Harry pressed flat against the broom. It responded with a burst of speed. Unlike the Cleansweeps, the Nimbus rode smoother the faster you pushed it. The snitch didn't move as he sped towards it. He saw a bludger coming up towards him as Fred flew below him. He didn't deviate as Davies swerved, taking the bludger, dropping the quaffle, but giving Harry the precious two seconds he needed.
The snitch was in his hands.
It took a few seconds for him to hold it and the whistle to blow before the stadium roared its approval.
Ginny flew up to him and hit him on the shoulder. "I'll get you next time, Potter," she said before drifting off. Harry almost fell off his broom as his teammates surrounded him.

It was a nice May day outside. It wasn't too warm, the skies were partly cloudy and Luna looked wistfully out the window in the library. She longed to be outside today. Instead, she was doing her best to study and keep Harry from pulling his hair out or Astoria chewing up her third quill today.
She loved her mates, but they were too competitive at times. Astoria had maintained a first spot the last three months, after Harry had done the same the prior three. Harry was getting interested in much more advanced work, but he still had to do well to keep his deal with Professor Flitwick.
Astoria was more driven than ever. She felt like she was far behind Harry and herself. Luna didn't see it. Astoria knew almost as many spells as she did, had taken to Runes and Latin like a fish to water, and was honestly beating Harry in their classes as his attention drifted some.
They both felt tired and frazzled though.
Luna felt all that Astoria, and their friend Hermione, was missing was they lacked imagination.
Harry had always worked hard, but he would daydream. She liked it when he daydreamed with her as they grew up. Luna felt it was that ability to imagine impossible things being real that gave him that edge.
Astoria was learning, and was letting go. Hermione still clung to facts as though that was all there was in life. She could be very creative, but she didn't always think outside the box.
Luna wanted to go outside. As much for her sanity as those she cared for.
"I want to go out," she told them. Neville had convinced Hermione to take most of the day off to go into Hogsmeade. Next year would be nice with Hogsmeade weekends.
Astoria sat back. She pushed her shoulders back to stretch. Luna found her eyes wondering as she did. Astoria was a very pretty girl and she found she liked Astoria stretching like that. Especially how her shirt pulled tight. Someday her and Harry would be ready. Harry didn't stop. "Ten more minutes," he asked.
Astoria met her eyes. "Harry, I think it's time for a break," Astoria said to him.
"Another minute," he told her.
Harry needed a break. She moved a seat over to sit next to him and kissed him on the cheek. She wanted to do more, but was trying to be patient. He stopped, as she knew he would. "Come on, Harry. We have time," she coaxed him.
He sighed and sat up, rubbing his eyes. "What time is it," he asked, his voice breaking just slightly. It was cute when he did that. His voice was definitely changing lately. It was a good change.
Astoria looked behind them. "About eleven. How about we raid the kitchens and go out on the grounds."
Harry yawned as he stretched his arms over his head. He was taller and his shirt pulled tight in a different way. Quidditch workout were keeping some muscle on him as his bode lengthened. "Sounds good. Should we drop our stuff off first?"
"My omnioculars would be nice," she told them.
A while later they were approaching their rock. A group of first years were at it. "How about down towards the lake," Harry suggested.
"There is that small knoll by the forest," she said.
Astoria took her arm and they followed Harry. "What do you want to do this summer," Astoria asked her.
"Seeing dragons again would be nice. Or maybe going to Norway to look for moon frogs. There will be a full moon nine days before Harry's birthday. We could look for moon frogs. Then go to the dragon preserve in Sweden. There would be enough time to bring Harry to Vanaheimr," she said looking past Harry.
Astoria chuckled. "I adore you, Luna. That sounds brilliant."
Luna's eyes lost focus at the words. Her heart thudded in her chest. She didn't think Astoria noticed what she really said, but the words excited Luna.
Harry put the basket down. A chill passed through on a wind. Her eyebrows furrowed. She looked around and saw a dog running along the edge of the wood. It was running as fast as it could. It was black, with a white streak on its left leg. It was also going straight for Harry and it didn't look friendly. "Harry," she called out.
He turned to see the dog. It was running fast and would be to him before he could pull his wand. His hand went up. She saw it happening and screamed out. "Harry, no!"
"Qui ante per insidias," he cried out. Astoria was reaching for her wand but Harry had already protected them. A golden dome popped into existence around them. The dog barked and growled as it jumped at him. He rolled and the dog just caught his arm. Harry cried out. The air around them dropped in temperature. The dog pulled Harry over and they rolled.
She grabbed for her own wand. The dog attacked Harry, biting at his arm he held before his face. "I can't cast without hitting Harry," Astoria cried out.
There was a bark behind them and an even larger black dog with spiky hair down its back jumped over them, through the shield. Her eyes went wide. Harry had cast it to keep all evil out. The other dog let go of Harry's arm but didn't move in time to avoid being bowled over by the second dog. They started to fight. She rushed over to Harry.
"Depulso! Stupify! Incindeo!" Astoria yelled as fast as she could. The first hit one of the dogs. It whimpered as it flew down the hill. The other rolled over and growled before its fur suddenly lit on fire. It cried out running towards the water. It rolled over before taking off for the woods.
Luna was at Harry's side. Some screaming came to them from up the hill. He was holding his arm, blood trickling or running from deep bite marks and puncture wounds. "He attacked me," Harry said shocked.
She ran her wand over his arm as he held it. There were scratches and bites over his body, but the damage to his right arm was quite severe. She tried to keep her panic down. "Episky," she started to repeat. A few small scratches closed. There were more screams. "Luna, we need to get him up," Astoria said. Her panic was starting to take over her. Luna continued to try to heal Harry.
"Luna," Astoria said moving to Harry's other side. "Luna, if we are to save him, we need to move now. Can you levitate him?"
She looked at Astoria and nodded. "Wingardium Leviosa," she said. Harry floated up. Astoria grabbed his robes. Harry's eyes were rolling back in his head. Why did she feel so cold and as though all the happiness was gone?
"Luna! Move!"
She shook her head and looked up. A few dementors were coming over the top of the hill towards them.
Astoria started to pull Harry towards Hagrid's. It was the closest place. She held her spell, thinking of Astoria and Harry. It helped to keep the despair from the Dementors back. They ran. The dementors moved past them, going in the direction the dogs had run into the woods. A few more started to head for them out of the shadows in the woods. Astoria pulled them away. It was away from Hagrid's, and away from the creatures. They came over the rise to Hagrid's hut and pulled up short. There were two bodies on the ground and when they stopped, the four Dementors started to move towards them.
They turned and had two groups behind them. They wouldn't be able to go anywhere without running into them. Astoria dropped to her knees. "No," she cried.
Luna felt her heart hurt. She was going to lose Harry and Astoria. She lost the concentration on her spell and Harry fell. She grabbed Astoria and pulled her over Harry, putting herself on top of the pile. The dementors approached. Harry moved.
"Expecto Patronum!" His voice was low, but it held a power that exploded from the wand in his hand. It was Astoria's wand. A large snowy owl soared out of the tip of his wand. It flew around them. The dementors stopped their advance.
She looked down at Harry. His face was white and she didn't think he could hold it for long. The snowy owl circled them, pulling in closer, but keeping them away. She thought he might pass out before a spectral wolf suddenly shot past them. It snapped at the dementors, who suddenly started to flee. "Harry," Mr. Lupin called out. A cat quickly joined the wolf. Harry's eyes rolled back into his head and the wand fell out of his hand.
Luna cried. Astoria and Harry were out and he was hurting.

Qui ante per insidias = repulse those with ill intent
