MIKE POV
Parking my car outside the building, I bit my lip, looking around, confused. This used to be an old power plant, but it was supposed to be closed and abandoned now. Shaking my head, I got out of my car and began to approach the building, wondering how I was going to get inside. Then I saw it: a large painted butterfly by a crumbled section of wall.
'Of course, follow the butterfly, the shape of the figure for the trial.'
With that in mind, I climbed over the wall and began working my way through the yard of the building, at one point having to duck under a fence, on which I cut my finger. Grimacing and trying to ignore it, I reached a door which was a struggle to open. Shaking my head, I managed to open the door, which was stiff and creaked as it opened.
I edged my way inside and looked around. There was another butterfly half on the wall and half on a small door directly in front of me, so I cautiously walked towards it and tried to open it. It swung open and I walked inside, but there was nothing inside expect the entrance to a large pipe and in front of that entrance was a box of matches. Confused, I slowly approached the pipe and picked up the matchbox. I glanced inside the pipe. Did I have to crawl through it? As if the answer needed to make itself known, my eyes caught sight of another painted butterfly inside the pipe.
Breathing a sigh and keeping the matches with me, just in case it got too dark to see, I climbed into the pipe and began to crawl down it. I didn't know where it would lead, but I guessed if I followed the butterflies then I would be heading the right way. When the pipe door suddenly closed behind, it pretty much left me with no other choice.
As I crawled down the pipe, I took a careful look around and noticed that the pipe was wide enough that I was sure at least two more people could fit in next to me but it was still narrow vertically and I couldn't stand up or even get into a crouching position. Suddenly, a little further in, I felt a sharp pain in one of my fingers and I swiftly drew it back and struck one of the matches and using the light, I saw to my horror that the pipe was full of broken glass. The mention of suffering now made sense as I realized I would have to crawl over the broken glass and get to the other end of the pipe to complete the trial.
'Broken glass. Sharp as a razor. Gotta...gotta take it slowly, inch by inch...'
Taking a deep breath, I prepared myself. Extinguishing the match, I continued to crawl through the pipe, wincing at the pain as the glass cut into my skin. I moved slowly and lightly, preventing as much of the damage as possible. I continued to crawl along the pipe until I came to a fork where the pipe went left and right.
'Oh shit; which way? Which way? I can't see anything in here. Where are those matches?'
I managed to grab a match and struck it and when it lit, to my surprise, I noticed that the flame was bending towards the right pathway.
'Of course, flames are fed by oxygen, which means there must a way out on the right. Oh, and there's a butterfly painting on the wall. Follow the butterflies.'
I extinguished the match and continued to crawl down the tunnel of pain, gritting my teeth against the pain. I continued to crawl until I came to yet another fork and using the same method as before, I followed the path of the match flame and headed to the left until finally, I saw what I was looking for: an exit. I crawled over and gently lowered myself out of the pipe and once outside, I forced myself to stand up. I was in agony, but luckily, no glass had gotten stuck to me at all and I also noted that while I was bleeding, it wasn't serious except for the pain.
It was then that I noticed anther pipe, angled downwards. Groaning, I lowered myself into it and slid down until I hit a ledge. The moment I did so, I saw stars and had to force myself to my feet. It was then that I saw what was over the ledge. I was standing in front of a large field of electrical condensers connected together with wires. Some were live and sparking electricity, but some weren't, and seemed to form a path. Through the field, I saw a table with something on it and on the wall behind the table was another painted butterfly.
Dropping down, I noticed to my left was a door with the word 'coward' painted across it. It now made sense, I had to work my way through the electric maze to claim the memory card for the phone. There was a door on the other side that hopefully led out. I shook my head.
'This guy is insane. Still, I've got to do it for Shaun'.
The thought of my son brought a surge of strength into my tired and injured body and I headed over to the first of the dead wires. I cautiously began to step through the gap between the wires and carefully worked my way into the maze where I looked around and found another set of dead wires. I looked for a gap and finally found one. I got down to the ground and crawled under the wires into the next section of the maze where I found a path that would take me to the opposite edge of the maze. Carefully stepping over the first set of dead wires and ducking under the next set, I was standing at the opposite end, but I couldn't leave the maze, as the path was still blocked. There was another set of dead wires to my right, which I would, again, have to crawl underneath. I did so and found, to my relief, that the next set of dead wires would lead me out of the maze, next to the table.
I took a careful step back and then threw myself forwards through the gap in the wires. I was lucky that I hadn't gotten zapped by any of the wires while going through the maze. Groaning as I stood up, I walked over to the table and had to grab onto it so that I wouldn't fall down because of the pain from the tunnel and the old pain from the car crash, which had returned. Forcing myself to straighten up, I pulled out the phone and picked up the memory card and plugged it into the bottom slot of the phone. I sighed and fought to control myself as, once again, I was shown a live video of my son trapped in the well with the water getting deeper and him getting more agitated. The video than faded out and more letters appeared in the hangman.
I sighed. This still wasn't good enough. I still couldn't make any guesses to the address. I put the phone back in my pocket and left through the door and found myself back outside. I ran as fast as my injuries would allow me to and returned to my car and drove for the motel, determined to find out what the next trial was.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
