Remus grabbed the chocolate out of the box. House elves, Remus decided, were very kind. "so how did you find the kitchen Peter?" James asked. "well, I sort of fell, into the painting. And it sort of kind of opened. The elves told me you have to tickle the pear."
"do you think we ought to pay the elves?" Remus asked. "no. they don't need paying." Sirius replied. "they are like animals, like horses, they do work, but they aren't clever or compassionate." Remus shrugged. "how do you know they aren't like people?"
"my parents own a house elf. He's called Kreacher. His only aim in life is to work well enough that my parents cut his head off and hang it on the wall" Sirius said coldly. "Maybe he doesn't know any better." James said.
"No. he walks around the house muttering the M word-" Sirius tried to speak but was cut off by Peter. "what's the M word?" Peter asked. "it a slur against muggle borns. Its well… Mudblood" Sirius said the word mudblood much quieter. "anyway, he goes around the house saying the m word and calling people half breeds or blood traitors. He thinks muggleborns should be killed off."
Remus tried not to show any emotion, as poor, ignorant, innocent Peter asked "what's a half breed?" Remus spoke up. "its also a slur. Usually thought to be less bad than the M word. Its used against Vampires, Veela, goblins, werewolves..." Remus paused "sometimes house elves. Also its used against part humans, so people who are part Veela or part Goblin or something."
Peter nodded. "Sirius, slavery is still wrong." James said. Remus thought of his book. He, and the author, agreed with James.
Wizards have, over the centuries, kept many magical beings as slaves. Currently, in England, the only being allowed to be kept as slaves are house elves. However, creatures such as centaurs, mere-people, and of course, werewolves, are classified as beings, and slavery is allowed, though it is considered keeping a pet, rather than a slave. Regardless of the correct term, it is still wrong to keep slaves.
It is the fear of every werewolf to wake up in a collar, a slavery spell having been performed overnight. While most slavery bonds are placed on while the werewolf is unaware, some werewolves do consent to these bonds. The most common reasons for consent are the promise of food and shelter from the owner, or the threat of shunning from other family members.
"come on. Lets go. I was thinking… we really ought to make a map of hogwarts."
"that sounds amazing." Sirius agreed. Remus nodded. "I'm sure we could find a way to make the people move, to show us where they are." he said, already confident there was such a spell.
