When we get back to the theatre I check up on Dina. She really isn't doing well, so it's a good thing we are heading back to Jackson where there will be supplies and other tools we can use so Dina gets proper care.
"I'm going to be able to help you soon Dina." I whisper to her, "you'll be okay." I stroke her head slightly and my eyes stop at her stomach. Mel's large belly is still pictured in my head. Sure, I'm a trained soldier, but I'm also a trained medic and I grew up in an environment where childbirth was celebrated and praised. Killing Mel not only took away one life, but another who didn't even get to make it into this world. I get up and head back downstairs to where Jesse, Tommy and Ellie are. I find them already talking while hunched over a map.
"How's she doing?" Jesse asks me.
"Not great, but she'll be better when we get her back to Jackson."
Jesse nods, "Look here. The thought is to head home via Ellensburg."
"If we're in Fall City by tomorrow, we're doing good." Tommy chimes in.
I nod, "Good," I turn to Ellie, "Can we talk for a sec?" Ellie nods and we head to the back of the stage area while Jesse and Tommy continue to talk.
When we get to the back Ellie speaks first, "Lia-," I don't let her finish before I launch myself into her arms. My face is buried into her neck and Ellie leans her head on mine.
"What we did was super fucked up." I say softly.
"I know."
"Do you- do you ever think of the people we've killed?"
"What do you mean?"
'Like, think about who they are. If they have family?"
"They were bad people Li."
"We're bad people in their eyes."
"But we're not them."
Me and Ellie just stay looking into each other's eyes, "You know when we were talking about our first kills? Mine was my initiation process when I was 11. We picked up this pregnant woman who was about 8-9 months along. She didn't want to join, so they took her away, waited until she gave birth, then I was ordered to kill her with Leo. But he had to kill the husband. Leo was quick, but I waited too long. She just kept begging to see her baby until her very last breath."
Ellie places her hand on my cheek, "You're not a bad person Lia. It's just what we got to do to survive."
"What if I'm tired of it?"
"I'm with you. You and me, right?"
I smile at her, "You and me." I lean in to kiss Ellie softly. When I pull away I look into her eyes, "When we get back to Jackson, I just want to be with you. You and me, anywhere. I just- fuck, I feel like I'm gonna lose you any second we're here and I just want to start fresh with you where it's just us."
Ellie pulls away and pushes a piece of my hair out of my eyes. She doesn't speak which makes me nervous, "I want that too. We can fix up a place outside of Jackson- what Dina said about living just outside on a farmhouse or something sounds nice and there's lots of places near Jackson. We can get a dog, we can get multiple, we can start a family somehow."
"We can try the turkey baster trick." I tease Ellie.
She smiles, "I'll get you a dog. One that is not trying to kill us and instead it will protect you at all cost. Fuck it, we'll get multiple dogs and live out your 'if I had all the money in the world I'd buy multiple dogs with it' dream- even though it is the most fucking basic dream ever. It's yours, so it'll happen. I'll make it happen."
"I'll build an art studio for you. We'll make sure the house has a nice view so you'll constantly have a nice view to draw."
"I always do." Ellie teases and I smile.
"It'll be me and you."
"Me and you." Ellie says softly. Ellie gulps, "I love you."
"I love you too."
When we walk back towards Tommy and Jesse we see just Jesse there, "Hey."
Jesse looks over at Ellie and I, "Hey. How are you two, really?"
I shrug and Ellie just tells him fine. When he gives her a look she repeats it, "Fine." Jesse nods, "Thanks for coming back for me."
"My friends problems are my problems."
Ellie chuckles, "You're such a sap."
"Okay, how about "my friends can't get out of their own damn way"?"
"That's better." Ellie mutters and we go quiet again. That is until we hear commotion in the other room and Tommy's struggling voice, "Shit!" Ellie says and we all run to the scene. Because I was standing closest to the door when we start running towards the scene I'm the first one to run through the doors. When we run through the sound of two gun shots goes off and we all fall to the ground. I don't feel any pain.
"Lia.." Ellie mutters. Jesse holds me and the pain starts to move all throughout my body. I look down and see the bullet in my lower stomach.
"Hands up!" A female voice shouts, "Hands in the air or I shoot this one too!"
"Don't you do it, Ellie! Get out of here!" Tommy's voice shouts. I look up and everything spins and I feel more tired. I hear voices around me but I can't make out what is being said. Jesse's blurry face is in my vision as he looks at the scene in front of him. I hear another gun shot and my body irrupts in pain as Jesse quickly moves me behind the bar. I get a glimpse of Ellie running to the back and the female chases her. Abby.
"Jess, go help Ellie. Please leave me and go help Ellie."
"You're bleeding out Lia."
"Jesse, please go help Ellie." Jesse's figure is still blurry as his head slowly moves from the door, then back to me, "Jesse, please." I say slowly.
"Just tell me what to do to help you right now then I will help Ellie."
"Quickly check that the bullet went all the way through, then wrap it up with anything tight. After that go to Ellie, Jesse please!" Jesse nods and he moves my body to the side to look at my back.
"It went all the way through." Jesse mutters and he takes off his jacket to wrap around my torso. I wince at the pain. My vision blurs more and I feel myself loose consciousness.
"Go help Ellie." I say one last time. I see Jesse's blurry figure get up and run before I close my eyes and the world gets dark.
