Chapter 20: Causes Unknown

I had already controlled the water when the guards weren't watching and given my trident to Mom. It would have been great if I could have passed it along as a pendant, but my mom wouldn't have been able to turn it into a trident. I needed to channel my power into it first so that it could become a trident. Luckily, no guard saw us doing this. My mom carefully looked around and sliced through the bars of her cell. She sneaked out slowly between two guard shifts. She came near me and got ready to slice my bars open, but I motioned for her to stop.

I whispered, "Oceanus and Pontus will sense any demigod coming out of their cell. You're the only one who can do this. The prophecy specifically said that the mortal will reveal causes unknown. You've already been trapped in stone: the stone cells. So I think you can do this without too much risk."

"Alright. What do I have to do?"

"Spy on Oceanus and Pontus. Our only hope is to find some information that will help us escape or even defeat them."

Sally POV

I snuck behind the first guard that was just coming around. I waited till he was at a good distance from the other three guards, and sliced his neck from behind using the other end of the trident (which was pointed). Hearing him fall, a second guard turned around. I ran out of sight just as he was turning around. The guard called the other two guards, and they followed him as he jogged toward the dead guard. He bent down, and I stabbed him with the trident, coming back into sight. The other two guards, alarmed, charged toward me. I spun the trident in a circle to intimidate them, showing that anyone who came near me would be killed. However, this wouldn't last forever. Eventually they would realize that I didn't know how to fight, and close in on me. One guard charged, and I did my best to spar against him. The other joined him, and I knew I had to do something soon. I ducked away, and they followed. I was drawing them toward Percy so he could kill them and get back in his cell. But realizing my strategy, they circled around me to block me off. Taking advantage of their movement, I stabbed one as he was moving around. Three down, one to go. The remaining guard attacked, and I continued to move toward Percy. He started a quick-fire series of attacks to slow me down, and I turned and ran. He chased after me, and I knew I wouldn't get to Percy in time. I knew what I had to do. I threw the trident as well as I could toward Percy, and rolled to the side. Percy sliced through one of the bars, and charged out to meet the guard. He killed the guard in a matter of seconds, and ran back to his cell, passing me the trident again.

"Mom, you need to get back before the next shift starts," Percy said. The guards shifted around every 30 minutes in order to ensure no one got away by killing the guards. "You need to go as quickly as possible." I nodded, and started toward where I understood Oceanus and Pontus to be meeting.

Soon I saw a grand room surrounded by around 20 guards. This would be the hardest part of my mission. In order to spy on them, I would need to dispatch the guards without alerting Oceanus and Pontus. I still had my shotgun, but the shotgun only fit 9 bullets and I had only 27 total including the ones in the gun. That meant I would need to hit almost every time. While it would make a loud sound, I could force one of the guards to tell Oceanus and Pontus it was nothing. I got close, aimed, and started firing. For the first round of 9, I hit seven times. The bullets had Celestial Bronze and deadly poison mixed in, so every hit was fatal. The guards had obviously seen me now, so they charged toward me. My heart pounding, I reloaded as they neared me. Just as the first one reached me, I finished reloading. Much closer this time, every bullet found its mark. This meant there were just 4 guards left, and an entire 9 bullets left. However, the guards were now too close for me to get enough time to reload. Besides, Oceanus and Pontus were surely alerted by now. I needed to deal with that first. As the first guard got to me, I pulled out the trident and stabbed him.

But when the second guard neared me, I held the trident toward him to intimidate him. He didn't stop, but I dodged and kicked him to the ground.

Holding the trident above his chest, I said, "Call out to Oceanus and Pontus that nothing is happening, or you die."

He nodded, and did as I said. I wasn't sure if Oceanus and Pontus would believe it, but I had no other option but to hope they did. Meanwhile, I had reloaded the gun. I quickly shot the other two guards. I didn't want to kill the last guard because he had done as I said, but I couldn't just let him go. I stabbed him in both legs to keep him down, and advanced toward the room. Holding the trident, ready to fight if the sea gods were alerted, I stood next to the door. I could hear a conversation going on.

"What do you think that was?" said Oceanus's voice.

"I don't know, but we have bigger matters to discuss. My lord Primos wants to talk to us," replied Pontus.

This was shocking news. There was someone commanding even Pontus? I wasn't sure whether this was what I was supposed to reveal, but I continued listening.

Oceanus gasped. "Primos? Why? Have we done something wrong?"

Pontus replied, "I have no idea, but he said to start the message just about now."

They said in unison, "Hello, my lord."

Confused, I peeked into the room. There was a figure standing in the middle of the room. It looked sort of like a hologram, and it was a tall man who spoke in a deep voice. "Ouranos is dead. Pontus, you shall now take over as general. However, this now confirms my doubts. My son Chaos has decided to interfere."

A/N: What do you think of this idea? This is the only chapter I will upload today, because I haven't even started on the sequel and I don't want to have a long break between this and the sequel. Also, who doesn't love ending on a cliffhanger? Please review, it gives me motivation to keep writing.
