Hours Later
In the morning
The sun broke through the clouds. The sky was a deep blue. It was quiet with the shops and resturants not open to the public yet. Waves rushed calmly along the shore.
Brooke awoke first or so she thought she did. When she reached for the space in the bed beside her and felt emptiness. She felt her stomach drop. Last night happened. She knew that without a doubt. The discarded clothes that were thrown across the bedroom floor. When she closed her eyes she saw snapshots of their countless hours love making. She stared at her ring finger there remained an engagement ring.
Calming down the growing panic inside herself. She looked up towards the pillow and found a note there.
Brooke breathed a sigh of relief and took the note in her hands and read it slowly.
Good Morning my beautiful fiancée. I woke up awhile ago. After taking in half a hour to marvel in how blessed i was to have you and watch you sleep. You've never looked more peaceful. I left our room and went downstairs. Come join me for breakfast. Just for the double doors.
Love Lucas
Brooke practically leapt out of bed and pulled on his shirt. Then placed her feet into her sandals. And left the bedroom.
She carefully made her way down the hallway. Seeing for herself how full the walls were of pictures. Captured memories through the years. Some she remembered others long forgotten.
By the time she made it towards the double doors of the dining room. Her heart couldn't be fuller. She pushed open the doors and walked inside.
Breakfast was already awaiting her. French toast, bacon, eggs, The combined aromas of the food and peppermint tea made her stomach growl.
Lucas got up from where he was seated. Wrapped his arms around her. As she pulled him close to her in a passionate kiss. When the two seperated.
Brooke felt herself blush. Feeling his gaze on her. She had never felt more seen, heard, or cared for in her life.
"I'm still in shock that we're really engaged." Lucas said.
Breaking the comfortable silence between them.
"I know what you you think i was going to say no.? I've been dreaming of becoming you're wife for so long. This life with you and our kids. Is all i've wanted." Brooke confessed.
"Nothing is going to get in the way of our wedding day and the life as a family we plan to live. It took us so years to get here. I'm not going to allow what we've built to get tore apart. You and our kids mean everything to me." Lucas proclaimed.
The expression on Brooke's face softened. "We face the world together now as a team. My ring this was Keith's engagement ring he gave to you're mom. How did you. Where did you get it.?" She asked. Wanting to tread lightly on the sensitive subject.
Lucas took a breath and looked back at her.
"I visited my mom again. The first time since i relapsed." He replied. As the memory washed over him.
"Keith would be happy knowing that Brooke is wearing this ring. He always saw her as a daughter. It should belong to you now anyway. I have no use for it. Holding on to what never really was." Karen said. Handing over the engagement ring.
Lucas carefully put the prized heirloom in his pocket. Thanked her then headed towards the door.
"Luke. You know sometimes when you love someone. Keeping you're distance from them is what's best. I left because i honestly believed you were better off. Losing Keith the way i did. Broke my heart and my spirit in way i wasn't prepared for. There was nothing left in me to be a mother to you." Karen revealed.
Lucas turned and focused his gaze on her.
"Why are you telling me this.?" He asked.
"I never gave up hope that we would find each other again. And that maybe you would be open to the idea of us having a place in each other's lives. I'm moving back to Tree Hill. I miss it and you so much. This is completely you're decision. Take my cell number. I'll be back to Tree Hill in a few days. If you're willing to leave the there and begin fresh as the people we are now. Call me day or night." She handed over a blank card with numbers scribbled on the front.
"I'm sorry for the pain and the loss i caused you. I love you Lucas. You've always been in apart of my life even though we've been miles you can't look past it I'll understand and leave you alone." Karen said.
Lucas clutched the card tightly turned and left the home.
Brooke reached over taking his hand in hers.
"This is you're call Lucas. I will support whatever decision you make." Brooke said.
"That card is just sitting inside my bedside table drawer. I haven't looked at it since. Anyway we have breakfast to eat and and entire town to explore before we head back to Tree Hill." Lucas replied.
