Din watched as Aria hugged Kuiil goodbye before stepping forward to have a few words of his own.
"I am at your service," He said respectfully, "Should you need a friend or an ally."
The Ugnaught bowed deeply,
"You and your clan are destined for great things. I was honored to be a part of its beginnings."
Din made sure the bassinet was floating behind him as he and Aria walked back to the Razor Crest,
"The child is now our own." He looked down at his wife who was gazing up at him, clear adoration in her emerald eyes. "Until we reunite him with his own kind or he comes of age."
"I know." Aria replied, her hand reaching out to stroke the baby's ears. "I love him as my own."
"But that doesn't mean you can't have your own." Din clarified, brushing the back of his fingers against her cheek as she looked back up at him. "In fact I-" He began again, "I would like very much to hold one of my own blood in my arms."
Aria's gaze softened and he saw that she understood his meaning and approved of it.
"I'll keep that in mind." She said with a smile and Din climbed back into the pilot's seat, snapping switches and pressing buttons as the engines roared on either side of them.
"Where to next?" Din looked over his shoulder at Aria who shrugged, strapping herself into her seat and securing the child.
"I'll follow wherever you lead." She replied.
The Razor Crest hummed to life and Din guided it into the stars, wondering if anything had ever felt so right.
Aria
I peer up into the cockpit at the shining helmet twisting back and forth between controls. It's almost midnight and I'd been waiting for Din to return to the Razor all night. He had gotten back into the Guild, thanks to Greef Karga's influence, and had just returned from a week-long assignment. I could tell from the way my husband moved that he was exhausted, stressed and had a heavy heart tonight. On better days, Din usually sought me out, tangling himself with me before pouring his thoughts and troubles to me as I listened, usually stroking his hair or his shoulders in comfort. Tonight was different. He didn't tell me about the job but I got the feeling it was weighing on him heavily.
I climbed up the ladder, standing behind him watching as he flicked through star charts and maps, obviously distracting himself from something.
"Din?"
His head turned at the sound of my voice but he didn't spin around like usual.
"What is it, honey?" Din's voice sounded even more exhausted than he looked but I felt encouraged when he used the familiar term of endearment. I pressed a kiss to the sliver of skin exposed at the bottom of his helmet, on the back of his neck.
"Are you coming to bed?"
Din sighed, something he hadn't done in a long time and leaned forward to flick a toggle.
"Not tonight."
I paused, thinking and watching as my husband continued to guide the Razor Crest through the skies with a sure and firm hand. Then I slipped past his side, ducking under his arm.
"Aria-" He lifted his arms, scooting back in his chair involuntarily as I settled myself in his lap, wrapping my legs around his waist. I put my arms under his arms, reaching around to rest my hands on his shoulders as I cradled his torso to me, resting my cheek against his neck silently.
Din was still tense under my touch, his chair squeaking slightly as he shifted again but thankfully not to push me away. I turned my head as I felt his helmet lifting off, careful to keep my face away from him as he leaned to place it on his dash. He hesitated a moment before putting his arms under my legs and scooting me even deeper into him and I smiled when I felt his rough cheek rest against my head.
I felt his arm reach out to the panels again, this time switching to autopilot before he returned his full attention to me.
For a long time we just sat there, me on Din's lap and him hugging me to him as the stars twinkled around us.
"What happened today?" I whispered but he didn't answer right away, leaning his chair further back so I was resting on him.
"The job." My husband's voice was still tense, full of guilt and regret. "Two targets."
"Imperials?" I asked and I felt his head move as he nodded.
"Two commanders."
I remained silent. It wasn't at all like Din to regret gunning down Imperial commanders but I knew from experience that when he was like this, it took some time before he told me the whole story.
Finally, he continued, the torture in his voice filling me with worry and compassion.
"The first one was easy… he was in a bar in a private room with his mistress." Din paused and I felt his throat move as he swallowed hard. I tightened my arms around him as he went in, "But the last one."
He stopped again, this time unexpectedly burying his face in my bare arm as he choked back a sob. I felt a hot tear roll down the shoulder he was buried in and my heart went out to him. I turned my face carefully, kissing his throat and his jaw tenderly until he regained control again.
"The second one was in his residence. He... was with his child." Oh no. I suddenly understood why Din was so upset. It was reminding him of when he was a boy with his parents on the day they died.
"I had to finish the job." Din says brokenly, "So I did."
"And the child?" I ask breathlessly.
"He ran away." Din's words filled me with relief. "His mother took him as soon as I'd finished… she wasn't my target so I let her live."
"Oh Din." I'm almost crying, wanting to help him but not sure how, "It's not your fault."
"I just made that little boy fatherless, Aria." My husband sounds almost defeated and oh so exhausted. "What kind of man does that make me?"
I snuggle closer to him, pressing my lips against his neck again,
"It makes you a man who does what he has to in order to survive. A man who feels remorse for something he can't be blamed for." I squeeze my eyes shut, pulling away from him to face him even though I can't see him. "I'm in love with that man."
I feel some of the stress leave Din's body, knowing his eyes are looking at me. He leans forward and I wait expectantly until his lips brush mine, his stubble rough as he deepens the gesture. His tongue flicks into my mouth and he moans lowly, his fingers curling my shirt up as he touches my bare skin.
When Din finally pulls away, I keep my face turned towards him, eyes closed still.
"What is it?" He asks, kissing my bottom lip.
"I want you to know that I love every inch of who you are." I say, almost stubbornly. "Not just the man whose arms are around me or the man who makes love to me all night. I love the man who annoys and makes fun of me, the man who gets angry when I disobey him. I love the man who makes himself hunt to make a living for his clan."
"Aria." Din whispers my name like a promise, a talisman and a thank you all into one, but I'm on a roll. I sit up on his lap, searching for his hands and holding them tightly.
"I love you so much." Here goes nothing. "And I want my baby to be just like you."
Din stills beneath me and for the first time in a long time, I am desperate to see his face. He is quiet for so long that I wonder if I made a mistake telling him so soon.
"You want your...what?" His voice isn't the steady, calm voice of my Din Djarin. It startles me how much emotion and confusion is in his tone but I repeat myself,
"My baby. I want him to be just like you."
Again, my husband says nothing. I briefly wonder if Din has suddenly died in his chair and if so, if that means I can look at him.
"Your baby." He repeats so softly that I'm sure I've imagined it.
"Din?"
Suddenly I'm in the air and I shriek, grabbing for his shoulders as he stomps out of the cockpit, down the ladder and into the belly of the Razor Crest.
"Din!" It's taking all of my willpower to not have my eyes fly open as he carries me, setting me down on our bed as he flicks off the light. I hear the clink of Beskar followed by the brush of clothing and my husband is back in my arms in a matter of seconds. He pulls me close and I snuggle into his bare chest as his legs twine with mine in the dark.
"Your. Baby." Din repeats again, louder this time. His fingers curl around my shoulders as he turns me in his arms, "Our baby!""Yes, love, our baby." I clarify, wanting to be absolutely sure that Din knows what I'm talking about. "You know? Mine and yours? Little baby growing in Mommy's-"
I'm cut off as Din grabs my face, pushing his mouth down on mine as he kisses me deeper than ever before, over and over until I'm holding him like a lifeline.
I run my hands down his bare back, wondering if I would ever get used to having him like this...open, tender, all mine.
After a few more kisses, which say more than words, Din pushes back to look down at me, his face inches from mine and I can see the glimmer of his eyes.
"You're pregnant?" He hardly dares to whisper.
"Yes, Din." I can't help but wonder if he even believes me. "You're acting like I'm going to get up and yell 'just kidding!' at any given moment but I'm not. Baby, I'm pregnant. You're gonna be a dad."
"Oh god." My husband utters and this time I see the glimmer of his straight, white teeth. "You're serious."
"Yes, I'm serious!" I say louder, "Din Djarin had sex, lots of sex, with Aria Djarin during the four months of their marriage. Poor man, he hadn't had sex since he was a teenager so he had a lot of catching up to do. They also fought a lot but we don't have to talk about that. One of those fateful nights, Din Djarin said 'Hey! Let's shake things up a bit!' and planted Baby Djarin," I put Din's hand over where my uterus would be. "Pop! Right into Aria Djarin, that's me by the way, and let it bake for a few months. Aria Djarin woke up to the feeling of intense sickness, ran to the bathroom and promptly threw up all over the place, but let's not talk about that either."
"But when-"
"You weren't home, thank goodness, so you didn't get to hold my hair out of my face while I barfed. Next time, love." I kept going, feeling my husband relax with every word that passed. "Then Aria Djarin decided to tell Din Djarin the happy news that he was gonna be a father. Din Djarin proceeded to freak out." I kissed The Mandalorian above me quickly. "I'm still waiting to find out the rest of the story."
Din took a deep breath and slid down my body, lifting my shirt and kissing my stomach tenderly. I wove my hands in his hair and waited until he slid back up.
"Din Djarin eventually got over the shock of learning about the baby." I grinned as my husband continued my impromptu story, "He was having a shitty day but, as always, Aria Djarin made his night a hell of a lot better." Din planted a kiss on my collarbone, his words ghosting over my skin as he went on, "He knew in that moment… that his life was perfect."
I couldn't speak, emotion choking me up at his simple but meaningful words.
"The end." I managed and Din laughed.
"Hopefully not. Until the next chapter."
I kissed him, letting him take control of the movement before whispering back,
"Until the next chapter."
