It was March and the weather was warm and perfect. Well, at least in Seattle. We were driving back home from college and Jake was listening to Alan Walker. I was enjoying the view through the window and smirked.
"What?" he asked me.
"It's nothing."
"Just tell me already!"
"It's been six months, Jake."
"What?" he wondered. Clearly, I wasn't making sense.
"It's been six months since we started dating," I said and his mouth made a 'O'.
"Wow. Yeah, I guess. But why the smirk?"
I hit myself in the head with my hand and laughed. "You haven't taken me on a date yet."
"I literally live with you, Ness," he laughed. I stared at him blankly which made him pull himself together. "Okay. Okay. Well, I promise to take you out on a date next Friday."
I shook my head and laughed. "Very romantic."
"I'm sorry," he apologised.
"You're sweet when you are stupid." He pulled in the driveway and we walked inside the house. Carlisle, Emmett and Jasper were watching a game. Alice, Esme and Mom were talking something. Dad and Rosalie were playing chess. "Hi everyone."
"How was your day, squirt?" Emmett asked without taking his eyes off the TV.
"Good. Good. Guess what, Jacob told me he'd take me out next weekend. For a date," I giggled and Emmett turned to Jacob with wide eyes.
"You told her you'd take her on a date?" Emmett laughed out loud.
Jacob raised his hands defensively and rolled his eyes.
"Good luck, bro. You need it a lot," he teased Jake and turned back to watch TV.
"Oh, thank you, big guy. I hope you don't need it, given that you already break houses and what not. I don't even want to get started on what you and Blondie do."
Everyone burst out laughing except for Rose.
"I win. Check mate," Dad announced and she smacked his head.
"Of course, you do. Stupid mind-reading gift of yours," she snapped.
"And I thought only I hated it," Jake said sarcastically and high fived Jasper.
"Jacob. Nessie. Please come over to the kitchen," Esme called out and we went in there.
"What is it, Esme?" I asked her.
"Well, now that you've gone to college and are a big girl and all that, I thought the cottage would be better if I renovated it. Given that Jacob spends a lot of time here I thought it would be better if you have a bigger study."
"Wow! I would love that!" I exclaimed and she nodded with a gentle smile.
"So, your Dad and Mom will be staying in Edward's old room until it's done."
"Okay," I said, nodding at her to continue.
"I wanted to make sure if you would like to stay with Jacob un-," she begam.
I cut her off and Jake and I grinned widely. "I would love to, Esme."
"Oh, all good then," she winked at me.
"Why-why isn't her Dad saying anything?" Jake whispered to Esme with narrowed eyes.
"I can hear you really well," Dad said from the living room.
"Well, I had already discussed it with him. He seemed pretty annoyed though. He told me that Nessie would be really glad to occupy the guest room temporarily. But, I thought that it would be really nice to give y'all some alone time."
I threw my hands around her. "Oh, Esme! You are the best grandma ever!" She laughed and kissed my cheek.
"Oh, and Esme?" Jacob said.
"What is it, Jacob?"
"Is there by any chance you could turn both the bedrooms soundproof? It is really bad that-," Jake said.
Esme cut him off before he could even finish the sentence. "Sure, Jacob. Sure."
Jacob and I burst out laughing and Mom giggled while Dad just stared at the roof for a very long time. We walked to the cottage after saying our good night and Jacob tucked me in after I changed into pajamas. "Good night, Ness," he said and gave a quick peck on the lips.
"Do you have to go to patrol?"
"Yes, of course. It is our turn today."
"Oh, okay," I muttered disappointedly.
He smiled. "Come on, we have a whole week ahead of us. Alone."
That put a smile on my face. "Yeah, you are right. I love you, Jake."
"Love you too, Ness. Sleep tight."
I heard him phase outside the house. He tapped the window with his paw and I giggled. He tapped it again and I opened it as I giggled. He gave his wolfy grin and licked my face after I scratched behind his ears. He licked me again. "Yew, Jacob. You are such a puppy." I heard Mom and Dad laugh silently. "Be safe, Chief. I love you," I kissed between his eyes and saw him run into the woods where he joined his brothers.
Jacob and I were racing through the woods. We were jumping, leaping and laughing- only mine was a high pitch shriek and his was a wolfy bark. Racing was something that always made us feel alive. No matter how tragic the day was for either of us, one run was all it took to forget the misery.
But, today we were racing for fun. Surprisingly, Jacob overtook me and barked.
"Oh, cut it out, buddy. You know I always win," I smirked and sped up. Suddenly, something did not feel good. I looked around me as a sense of fear and darkness filled me in, stopping me from running. "Jacob, stop! Stop, Jacob!" I yelled, but he didn't seem to listen. "Jake, please stop running." Out of nowhere, a vampire -his blood red eyes were filled with anger and hatred- pounced at Jacob and pinned him to the ground. He crushed the giant wolf's body and neck and I stood there doing, but watch Jacob trying to escape from his hold. Finally, I heard two sounds- the crushing of bones and a murderous laughter.
"JACOB!" I screamed and opened my eyes to find Mom and Rosalie beside me. I was sobbing uncontrollably, sweating and shaking. I was fully aware that Rosalie and Mom were speaking to me, but I couldn't comprehend whatever they were trying to say. I also knew that I was rambling something in between my sobs, but I couldn't figure out what I was trying to say either.
"Renesmee," Rosalie shook me. Her voice was a mixture of agony and anger. "You gotta tell us something."
"Rose-" I trembled and she hugged me to her chest as I showed them my horrible nightmare and they gasped in horror. Mom looked terrible. If she were even half a percent human, she would have broke down and had a panic attack. "I couldn't hear him, Rosalie. Maybe he was asking for help. Jake…my Jake is hurt, Rose. The vampire seemed very angry. Maybe he hurt Jacob in order to get to me or even worse, our family. Oh, God, he is hurt because of me!" I sobbed into her chest and she kept on telling me that it was okay and that nothing would happen to Jake.
"Nessie, Jacob is fine, sweetie. Your father, Emmett, Jasper and Alice had already left to find him," she assured me. I heard Alice rushing into the house into my bedroom.
"Nessie, we found Jacob. He is hurt, Ne-"
I let myself loose from my family's hold and ran to the mainhouse into Carlisle's office, following Jake's scent. Carlisle and Dad were inside, their faces carrying a look of death.
"He was on his patrol, Nessie. Do you remember the newborns he mentioned earlier?" she asked and I nodded. "They were back again and there was two of them. Collin had seen them and began chasing them and they changed tracks and Collin chased one among them and left clue of the other. Jacob found the second newborn and chased him. Jacob had pinned him down to the ground and killed him. Apparently, the other one had escaped from Collin and pounced at Jacob from the side. He grabbed his neck and Jacob couldn't breathe and dropped down on the ground," Alice gulped and put a hand on my cheek. "Emmett and Jasper are tracking down the new born, Nessie. Don't worry. Jacob will be fine."
My knees gave out, but before I could hit the floor Rosalie caught me.
"Renesmee," Carlisle addressed me. "He is unconscious now. His right side is completely injured and honestly, he needs a lot of time to get better. But, I can tell you for sure that he will be back to normal. He has already started healing."
I could clearly tell, from Carlisle's tone, that it was not that simple. "How long, Carlisle?"
"A minimum of ten days, dear. I am sorry," he smiled apologetically. "You could see him now, if you want to."
"Th-thank y-you, Carlisle," I said and he gently patted my head.
I dragged a chair to his bed and sat by his side and took his hands in mine. He looked like a corpse. Carlisle had given him morphine, yet he looked pained. His right leg, right hand and his entire body from his chest to the torso were bandaged. I knew that something like this had already happened when he tried to save Leah from a new born and he had said that it was worse.
I couldn't stop myself from crying. I imagined what he would have said if he was looking at me now. You are such a stupid crybaby, Ness.
"Nessie, I have to break his bones for them to regrow. I think it would be better if you stay a good few miles away from the house."
I shuddered at the mere thought of it. I wanted to stay with Jacob, stay by his side and never leave him. But at the same time, I wasn't sure if I could manage hearing him writhing in pain. "Okay, Carlisle. Sure," I said.
I kissed Jacob's forehead before I left to the cottage. I checked the time. It was only four in the morning. I headed to the bathroom and splashed some water on my face and changed into a sweatpant and sweatshirt. I calculated that the miserable event of breaking bones would take three hours at the very least. I plugged in my earphones and tried listening to some music mainly to distract myself from the horrible sound and that did not seem to work. I wanted to scream my lungs out. Disappointment, anger, pain and agony killed me from inside and I laid down and sobbed into my pillow.
I learnt today that when you wanted something to end quickly, time seems to creep slowly.
I woke up when I heard Jacob wince. "Oh, Jake! Jake," I panicked.
"Shhh," Carlisle said to me. Jacob's eyes were only half open. "I've given some drugs that would reduce the pain. He will probably be awake for an hour." I couldn't say if he was talking to me or himself.
It has been four days since Jacob got hurt. He was way better than before. He could talk, but it hurt when he tried to raise his voice or laugh. Since his hand was broken, Mom, Esme or I fed him. He was awake for only about six hours a day because Carlisle was giving him a high dosage of the drugs. Nobody had been to college, but I'd managed to go for two days under the pressure of Carlisle. He told me that being with Jake was making me miserable. There were visitors constantly and this made Jacob feel bad. I could clearly notice that he did not like being pitied. The girls would look at him and frown in sadness and Jake would look at me and sigh. He said that it makes him feel weak and pathetic. Billy was heart-broken to see his son's situation. But, not once did he show that he felt terrible and would often say that it was a good thing Jacob healed quickly.
I stared at Carlisle leaving the room. Everybody's life around me was a fast-forward but, somehow mine stood still.
"Nessie?" I heard Jacob mumble.
"What is it, Jake? Should I call Carlisle? Or adjust your pillows?" I panicked.
His chest rumbled with an unheard laughter. "No."
"What is it, Jake?"
"I- I am sorry, Nessie," he said.
"What?"
"I am sorry. I couldn't…take- couldn't take you on a date," he smiled apologetically.
Tears flowed down my cheeks. "Jacob."
"No, you really wanted to go. I am…sorry. I ruined it."
"No, Jake. It doesn't matter. I love you."
"Hey, please don't cry. Baby, I love you too," he raised his left hand and wiped my tears.
"Jake, can I ask you something?"
"Yes. What is it, Ness?"
I showed him my dream, mainly focussing on the vampire. I had not spoken of it to Jacob until today. I wasn't sure how Jacob would feel about talking about it. But, it had to be some time. Right? "Is it him, Jacob?"
"Nessie!" he shouted. "How did you know?"
"Is that him, Jake?" My voice was rude and angry and stern.
"Yes, but—"
"I had a dream, Jacob," I said and left the room.
