Chapter 24- Aftermath

"You okay? Feeling okay?" he asked, running his fingers through her hair.

She rested on his chest, nodding, "Physically I'll heal. It's just going to take some time for me to get over this and feel safe. I mean, I can't believe he took me hostage. He was supposed to be my friend" she cried.

Kelly wrapped his arm around her and let her get it all out.

When the team got back to the station, Jay and Voight threw Marks in the cage.

"I need medical attention" he cried.

"You'll get medical attention in county" Jay stated.

"That's illegal. I know my rights" Cody argued.

"Hmm" Voight stepped forward, "you know your rights?" he asked.

Marks nodded, "yes I do" he thought someone was going to help him.

"I'm glad you know your rights. I also know the law and you know what, kidnapping and holding someone hostage after you killed her daughter is also against the law" Voight stated.

"She was supposed to be with me. She was supposed to have my baby. That bastard stole her from me when I am better than he is. I have more to offer her than Severide does. He doesn't deserve her" Marks argued.

"You are one sick son of a bitch. You killed an innocent little girl who did not have a chance to live her life. You almost killed Dani at the same time. You are sick and never going near Dani ever again" Jay informed him.

"She's mine and will always be mine" Cody yelled.

Jay scoffed, "yeah, you keep thinking that" he replied before leaving the basement and going up back to the squad.

"We need to nail him" Jay said to everyone in the team.

"We got him hook line and sinker" Antonio said.

In the aftermath of the kidnaping, Dani has been trying to recover while staying with Kelly, Matt, and Gabby.

Her physical wounds were healing faster than her mental wounds. It was taking her a longer time to get over what happened to her. She felt more safe around everyone than when she was by herself.

Currently, she was trying to convince her helicopter husband that she was okay to get back to work. She had a whole plan and speech planned out when he came home.

Dani was in the middle of making breakfast when they came in from work. They each dropped their bags in the closet by the door, smiling as they made their way into the kitchen.

"It smells great in here" Gabby commented.

"What are you doing up?" Kelly asked.

Before she could reply, Matt stepped forward, nudging his friend, "I think what he means to say is, how are you feeling today Dani? I am glad you are doing better" he interpreted.

Dani smiled and laughed, "I am fine. I feel good today. I made you all breakfast and am getting my list ready for lunch and dinner" she replied.

"I'll go grab the stuff from the store after breakfast" Kelly said as he wrapped his arm around her, kissing her cheek before making himself a plate.

She met Matt and Gabby's gaze, before glancing back at her husband, "actually, Grace is coming over to pick me up and we are going to go together" she stated, taking a bite of her eggs.

Kelly looked up midbite and cleared his throat. "I can go babe" he replied.

She shook her head, "no, I am going to go. I need to get some air. I am okay, I promise I am okay to do this" she stated.

Kelly looked worried. He took a chug of his orange juice. "At least let me come with you" he asked. He just wanted to make sure she was okay.

She noticed that since the kidnapping and everything that happened with Cody, he was having a hard time letting her out of his sight. It was like he was afraid she would vanish or something bad was going to happen.

She needed to go alone because she wanted to stop at the 21st district and check in with Jay. She was getting updated on the case, but she wanted to check in person and make sure things were progressing. She also knew she couldn't do that if Kelly was with her.

"No, I am going with Grace. Besides, my breathing has gotten better, my O2 stats have gone up and returned to normal levels, Connor even checked my lungs on my last x-ray and everything was back to normal. Don't worry so much" she wrapped her arm around his neck from the side as he sat at the island and ate his eggs. "I'll be with a trauma doctor, so if something does happen, at least I'll be with Grace" she teased.

He put his fork down, glancing at her mid bite, "that's not funny" he replied.

She laughed, holding her fingers up and pinching them a little, "it's a little funny" she stated causing Matt and Gabby to burst out laughing.

"She got you that one Severide" Gabby added.

"Come on, don't forget you promised Nick that you would finish building that fort/tree house thing in the back yard" she stated. "Now Matt can help you" she added.

"Fine, go without me. Damn, I know when I'm not wanted" he teased, continuing their breakfast.

After breakfast, Dani and Gabby cleaned up while the boys got some sleep. She could see it on his face. Kelly was exhausted. He was trying to do everything for her and work, it was too much for anyone.

While the boys were sleeping, Dani took a shower and changed her clothes. Grace was picking her up on her way to work and take her to the station. "Gabby, I'll see you later" she said before quietly making her way into the bedroom to find Kelly still sleeping, on his back, one hand across his stomach, the other behind his head.

She walked over and leant over him, giving him a chaste kiss, "I'll see you later, I'm heading out" she gave him another kiss before leaving quietly.

She grabbed her bag and walked out. She was on a mission and she knew what needed to be done, she just didn't know if she had the courage to do it.

Grace parked outside the station and parked. She looked at her best friend and grabbed her hand, squeezing it for comfort. "Are you sure you want to do this?" she asked.

"I have to. I talked to Jay, Cody's not talking. They need my help. I need to do this and be done with him once and for all" she replied.

Grace nodded in understanding. "I get it, I'll be a phone call away. If Jay can't take you home, call Connor. He's off and I told him you might need him" she stated.

Dani nodded and gave her best friend a hug before getting out of the car. She stood outside the station, just staring up at it. Tightening her hold on her locket necklace for strength, she took a deep breath and nodded, steeling herself before making her way into building.

Trudy stopped what she was doing at the desk and looked up when she saw Dani standing at the doorway of the district. She sighed and understood completely what she was doing there.

She walked over and wrapped her in a hug, not saying anything. Dani couldn't help but let a few tears fall out during the hug. Trudy pulled away and wiped her tears.

Dani nodded and wiped her tears, steeling herself for what she was about to do. She followed Trudy to the gates of the Intelligence Unit. She took a minute to collect herself before she nodded to Sgt. Platt. Trudy opened the gate and let her go up on her own. As hard as it was, she knew she needed to do this on her own.

Dani slowly made her way up to the Unit, stopping at the top of the stairs, freezing at seeing her bruised and bloody body pictured on the board with a picture of Cody.

The team was busy trying to make sure their case against Marks was solid and Dani was going to get justice. The problem was that Marks wasn't talking. First, they couldn't shut him up and now they can't get him to open his mouth.

"Dani, what are you doing here?" Kevin Atwater saw her first.

She broke her gaze from the pictures and took in the surprised look on their faces. "Everything okay?" Kim asked coming over to her.

She smiled at her and nodded, "I need to see him" she said.

Jay got up immediately, "no way" he stated.

"I need to put this behind me. I need to be done with this" she explained.

"Jay, I know you are worried about me and I appreciate it, but I promise you I am okay. He killed my daughter…almost killed me twice. I need to see him" she wasn't leaving until she saw him.

Voight was watching her while she was arguing with his detective. He knew that Halstead was protective over her and he was worried. He had a good reason to worry, but Voight could see the determined look in her eyes. He also knew what it felt like to lose a child and want revenge.

"Jay, I need to be rid of him. The only way that is going to happen is for me to see him. I am not leaving until I see him and get this done. He needs to know what he did to me and that it didn't break me" she stood her ground.

"Lock him in the cage" Voight's order rang the bullpen silent.

"Boss" Jay started to argue.

"Lock him in the cage" Voight repeated before walking out of his office and making his way over to Dani.

"I keep my word" he replied as he nodded for her to follow him.

It wasn't until they got to the door of the garage did she stop and close her eyes, her hand squeezing her necklace. "You don't have to do this" he stated, noticing her stop.

She opened her eyes and let go of her necklace, "yes I do. For me and for my little girl" she replied before taking a calming breath to get her nerves under control.

When she was ready she nodded for Voight to open the door. He walked in front of her, causing her to see Cody handcuffed to the bench in a metal cage.

She walked right in front of the cage and just stared at him.

He was looking down, so he didn't see her at first. "Whatever you came to say Sergeant, I am not talking" he stated.

"Cody" she called, causing him to snap up and meet her gaze.

Only then did she notice the scratches and bruises on his face. She knew Jay and the team had something to do with that. "Dani, you came" he was surprised.

"Open it" she stated.

Jay opened the cage and stood in the doorway, close enough to react if she needed him.

She walked right up to him and slapped him before grabbing his chin, directing his gaze right into hers. "I want you to look into my eyes and hear me because I came here for one reason and one reason only" she said before leaning to get face level.

"You are a sick, psychotic, freak that deserves to live the rest of your life alone, in misery for what you have done. You stalked me in school like a sick creep. You caused me so much stress that I lost my daughter, my only reason for living. You…you took that away from me. Like that wasn't enough, you followed me to Chicago like a pathetic lap dog. You stalked me, you hurt me, threatened to hurt my family, the love of my life…but I won't let you take that away from me. I won't let a pathetic, freak like you take my life away from me" she said before standing up.

"I hope you get everything that you deserve and more because to me, after this moment, you are nothing but a speck on my radar" she said before turning her back on him and walked out of the cage.

"You won't find anyone like me" he yelled after her.

She turned to him and slapped him again, "where you are going, there won't be anyone else for you to torment. You are going to live your miserable life in a dark hole getting everything to you that you deserve" she said before walking into the cage again and started punching him over and over. It was like all her anger was coming out.

"You should be thanking God for me not killing you, you pathetic piece of shit. You deserve this and so much more for what you did to me and my daughter" she yelled at him.

"You took my daughter from me. YOU KILLED A BABY" she punched him one more time before Jay walked in and gently pulled her off him.

She wiped her tears and walking out.

"You saw what she did to me, I want to press charges" Cody said spitting blood on the ground from her punches.

Jay and Voight both looked at each other before looking at Marks, "I didn't see anything" Jay said.

"Me either. That fall you took on the way down here was unfortunate though" Voight replied.

She stopped in front of Voight and wiped her tears, "thank you" she said. He kept his word to her. He told her that she would get some time with him before he was booked and he did that for her.

He nodded and waved a hand toward the door, indicating it was time for her to leave. Jay walked out and back up to the bullpen with her, his arm around her the whole time.

Once they were out of sight, Voight turned to Marks, "You really should be thanking God it was Dani that dished out punishment because if you killed my kid, you would be swimming with the fishes" he stated before leaving after his detective.

"You okay?" Halstead asked his friend as they made their way up the stairs. He knew that was rough and emotional for her.

She smiled at Jay through her tears, "yeah, I'm okay. I needed to do it" she replied.

He nodded in understanding, pulling her closer to him. Once they got back to the bullpen, Dani took some water from Jay before following him out.

"Sarge, I am going to take Dani home" he said to Voight.

Voight nodded, walking with them down to the bullpen and leant against the desk as they made their way out. She pulled Jay's arm to get him to stop for a second before turning back to Voight and walking up in front of him.

"I just want to say thank you for everything. You kept your word for me to have my time and I appreciate it" she said before stepping forward and giving him a hug.

He chuckled a little before patting her back, nodding before returning to Jay. "I think you are one of the only people that can get away with that" he whispered in her ear as they walked out and towards his car.

She laughed, smacking his stomach, "don't" she teased.

Jay took her back-home right in time for lunch. She walked in and saw that Gabby was in the kitchen making some lunch. "Hey, how did it go?" Gabby asked.

Dani put her stuff down on the couch and walked over to sit at the island, pouring herself some lemonade. "It was great, Jay was worried as per usual, but everything was okay. I got say what I wanted to say and it was releasing" she stated.

Gabby nodded as she continued making quesadillas and Spanish rice, "I can see that. I am glad that you were able to get some closure" she replied.

"Yeah it was good" Dani replied, looking around, "where are the boys? Sleeping still?" she asked.

Gabby shook her head, "they are attempting to try and build a tree fort in the backyard" Gabby stated.

Dani looked at her curious before she turned to the patio and made her way to the window to see Matt and Kelly attempting to put together a tree fort.

She shook her head at them standing in front of a half-built fort arguing with each other, no doubt about how to put the rest of it together.

She peaked her head out of the patio, "Hey guys, lunch is almost ready maybe another 20 minutes" she called out.

They both turned toward her and nodded, Kelly leaving Matt with the instructions before making his way up the patio, pulling her completely out and into his arms.

She burrowed into him to keep warm, "how was your time out?" he asked.

She smiled against his chest, "it was just what I needed" she replied.

He nodded, "and the trip to the 21st district?" he stated.

She pulled back and looked up at him surprised. How did he know that? She made Jay and Grace swear to secrecy. They wouldn't betray her.

He laughed with a smirk, "you forget, I know you" he breathed, brushing his lips against hers.

She huffed and rested her head back against his chest, as he swayed with her in his arms, "it was good. Very releasing. I got to say everything that I needed to say and get everything off my chest. I just want to be done with this now and move on with my life," she pulled up to press her lips against his, "with our life" she stated.

He smiled against her lips, "I like the sound of that" he replied.

She nodded and kissed his lips, "good, now let me go help Gabby finish up lunch" she kissed him one more time before pulling away.

She went back inside and made some Italian pasta salad and some regular antipasta salad with some garlic bread and garlic rolls.

When the guys came in, they immediately made their way to the kitchen, each plopping down at the island. "That smells amazing Gabby" Kelly said.

"Damn, that pasta looks great Dani" Matt said reaching over with his fork to spoon some into his plate, causing Kelly to smack his hand.

"My wife, my food" Kelly stated.

The rest of the gang started laughing. Matt and Gabby were happy that Kelly finally got his act together and made it official with Dani again.

The guys dished everything out on the island and took a seat next to each other, while Dani and Gabby stood on the kitchen side of the island.

"This is delicious babe, thanks" Matt said, reaching over to kiss Gabby's cheek.

The EMT blushed bright red, "you are welcome, it's a specialty in our family" she replied.

"Speaking of family, after everything that happened to me, we never got to celebrate your becoming Captain Severide" Dani said to Kelly.

He looked up at her mid bite and shrugged, "don't even go there Dani. You know that I don't like any fuss or attention around me" he stated.

"Kelly, you are the youngest person in your family and the youngest at 51 ever to make Captain. Please let me celebrate that my husband is brilliant. Besides, let something positive come from the aftermath of that horrible day" she walked over and wrapped her arm around him from the side.

He looked at her and could tell that she was excited about something for the first time in a while. "Fine," he relented, "just nothing big" he replied trying to reign her in.

"Well, after my date with Christian Grey, I feel like I need to show out" she stated with a straight face.

Kelly choked on his beer, looking at her with wide eyes, "please tell me we are thinking of the same thing right now" he said completely serious.

Gabby burst out laughing, knowing the details of the movie and of how the date went for the Severide couple.

"If you are talking about a bbq with all our friends and family, then yes, we are thinking the same thing" she replied smiling at his crestfallen face. He looked like someone just took a candy from a kid.

She leaned in to whisper in his ear, "after the bbq, I promise to re-enact chapter 6 of the book" she said against his ear, kissing his cheek as he turned bright red.

"Do I want to know?" Matt stated looking between all his friends like they were all in on a joke that he didn't understand.

Before Dani or Gabby could explain, Kelly jumped in, "hell no" he said.
