When they got home from therapy, Sophia went straight to her room, but JJ was sure to follow. Sophia tried slamming her door as sthe entered her room but JJ caught it and said,
"Hey, we need to talk."
"If it's about what happened today or Emily, then I'm not interested," the girl told her.
"Actually, it's about you," Jennifer stated.
"What about me?"
"Soph, this was your third violation."
The child suddenly realized what was going on. She'd been in foster care long enough to know the rules and what could get you taken out of a home.
"You're sending me back, aren't you?" the kid asked.
JJ took a step closer to the brunette and said,
"No, but this really is your last chance. One more phone call from school and your social worker will probably find out. I don't know how much longer I can cover for you."
"But what if no one tells Karen about anything-"
"Trust me, she'll find out."
"I'll be good," Sophia told the blonde.
"I know you will," JJ said and tucked a piece of hair behind the child's ear.
Another two weeks flew by and it was already May. It was a Friday night and the following Saturday was Anderson's, a fellow agent that worked with the BAU, wedding day.
The ceremony was at three and the reception was to follow. Emily arrived back in town that night but neglected to tell anyone where she was staying or that she was back for the wedding.
At around one-thirty the next day, Sophia was in her room getting ready for the wedding. She had put on her dress already and even curled her hair. The girl had on a very simple yet elegant red dress that contrasted beautifully with her dark curls. Then, she slipped on her black heels to finish it off, and headed downstairs.
The whole LaMontage family was down there as well and they were all finished getting ready. JJ was holding Michael and Henry was just standing waiting for his dad. Will was going through their bag to make sure they had everything. They were staying over night at a hotel.
The whole car ride was pretty quiet, except for the movie the kids were watching in the back, which was the Incredibles. Sophia couldn't get her mind off of having to see Emily again. After the last time she saw her, and now knowing what she knew, she didn't think she could handle it. JJ looked back and noticed how distracted and nervous Sophia was. She decided to wait and talk to her once they got there.
Will pulled up, and everyone piled out. JJ was holding Michael and Henry was holding Will's hand.
Sophia was on the opposite side of JJ with Will on the other, and she was silent. They all entered the church and sat with the rest of the team. Sophia sat next to JJ and Garcia, with Reid on the opposite side. Rossi and Hotch were behind them waiting for Emily.
When Prentiss showed up and took her seat, Sophia didn't bother to turn around or make eye contact with the woman. She decided the best thing to do was to ignore her.
After the ceremony, everyone headed to the reception.
There were assigned tables and the team had their own. Much to Sophia's liking she got to sit in between JJ and Reid. However, Emily was across from her and it was hard not to make eye contact.
Sophia only spoke with Reid and JJ throughout the whole dinner and everyone noticed how quiet she was being. While they were eating dinner, Emily got up to go to the bathroom and so did JJ.
When they excused themselves and walked away, Sophia watch them and then let out a big breath she didn't even know she was holding.
"Gee, how long were you holding that one?" Penelope asked from across the table. She was sitting next to Emily's empty chair and could feel the tension between mother and daughter, as well as the rest of the table.
Sophia just looked up and then back down at her food.
"Sweetie-"
"Don't," Sophia warned without looking up.
"I was just going to say that-"
"Penelope I knew what you were going to say, that's why I stopped you," Sophia snapped.
"Sophia," Will said in his fatherly voice that got the girl's attention.
Her head turned toward him and her eyes softened.
"I'm sorry," Sophia whispered then started picking at her food.
"No, I'm sorry. I know she's a touchy subject for you. I should've been more sensitive," Penelope apologized.
Sophia just nodded.
Right when they walked into the empty bathroom Emily's mouth started going a mile a minute.
"This is awful. She won't even look at me, and I'm right across from her. She can't pick her head up just once. I just want to talk to her and she won't even give me-"
"Woah Em, calm down."
Prentiss drew in a big breath.
"I just want her to know the whole story," Emily said.
"And we'll get there. But it takes time and you can't rush her."
Prentiss rolled her eyes and mumbled as she walked out,
"I don't have time."
As JJ's and Emily approached the table, they saw Penelope saying something to Sophia, who's head was down.
When they sat back down, Sophia looked up. Her eyes went to JJ and then traveled to Emily's. The kid thought Prentiss wasn't looking, but she was wrong.
Emily and Sophia just stared at each other. Prentiss didn't smile and her daughter didn't budge either.
Their eye contact was broken by Morgan, who started talking. Sophia was the one to look away, but Emily didn't.
After all the speeches and toast, the dancing started. Everyone was up out of their seat, except Sophia. She told JJ she was tired and just wanted to sit for a little.
Literally everyone at the table got up except for her. She looked over to see JJ and Will dancing near Spencer, Morgan, Penelope and Rossi and Hotch. Curiously, she started looking for Emily. She spotted her mother at the bar getting a drink. Prentiss was watching her team dance too and then she turned to see Sophia staring her down. She instantly started walking toward the child which caused Sophia to turn around and try to act casual.
After Emily approached her she took a deep breath and then sat down next to her daughter.
"Sophia," Emily said.
The girl turned to look at her.
"Can we talk?" Prentiss asked.
"I'm all ears mother," Sophia said sarcastically.
"I'm serious," Emily told her.
"So am I," Sophia said.
"Can we go and talk somewhere quieter?" Prentiss asked over the loud music.
Sophia sighed but nodded and followed her mother to the hall.
"What do you want to talk about?" Sophia asked.
"Us. How can I fix the mistake I made?" Prentiss asked.
Sophia's face went to complete shock.
"That's not what I meant. Honey, you're not the mistake," Emily said and took a stepped towards Sophia who took a step back.
"You better choose your next words carefully," Sophia warned.
"I'm sorry. I just- I want to be a part of your life," Emily said.
"Isn't it too late?" the kid wondered.
"I hope not."
"You want me to forgive you and say everything is okay and then we can be like a normal mother and daughter, right?"
Emily just looked at her.
"I just want to move past this and talk to you. Get to know you and maybe one day you'll be able to forgive-" Emily tried to say.
"Forgive you? You want me to forgive you after what you did to me? You left me. You were my mother and you abandoned me. I don't want to have a relationship with you. Not now, and not ever, so just leave me alone," Sophia said and tried to walk away.
"Sophia wait," Emily begged.
The child stopped in her tracks.
"I didn't give you up because I didn't love you. I gave you up because I loved you-"
"Oh really. Leaving your child alone in a park is a sign of love?" the kid asked.
"That's not what I meant," Emily told her.
"Remember when I got called to the principals for punching a kid in the face that called me a failed abortion?" Sophia asked.
Emily nodded.
"Please, tell me the truth when I ask you this. Was I a failed abortion? Did you ever want me?" Sophia asked.
Those words broke Emily's heart.
Her facial expressions softened and she moved closer to Sophia.
"Of course I wanted you. I still do. You were literally a part of me at one point and losing you just broke my heart," the mother admitted.
"Do you regret giving me up?" Sophia asked hopefully.
Emily took a second to think.
"Honestly, yes and no. Of course I wanted to keep you, but you wouldn't have been safe with me, and I know that for a fact."
"Who did I need to be safe from?"
"Your father," Emily told her seriously with a sigh. As she said those words a few puzzle pieces in Sophia's head started to connect, but before the kid could ask anything else, JJ showed up in the hall and said,
"Soph I've been looking for you, I was worried."
"Oh, I was just talking to Emily," Sophia said quietly and motioned toward the woman.
"What about?"
"Nothing," the kid said and started walking back to their table.
Emily let her go then gave JJ a sad little smile and returned to the dance party.
