Chapter 30.

=Normal POV=
[November 20; Dusk]
[Hunter Isle]

At first, Hiccup felt like it was going to be a repeat of what happened on Berk. The hunters were quiet, looking over him, and whispering a bit. Hiccup was ready to call the dragons and bail, making sure one of them got Toothless, and they would hide out on another island or something. Hiccup felt small under their gaze as he stood on the dock, trying to keep a calm face. All Hiccup felt right now was a judgemental gaze about why a dragon rider, an enemy of dragon hunters, would be on their island regarded by their leaders as some kind of hero who saved their business by handing them a map of the Archipelago and training one dragon for them. And maybe Hiccup had stopped the other dragon riders from destroying the ships a few days ago.

All of that aside, Hiccup was ready to call it quits, take off, and hide for the rest of his life. It didn't matter what anyone said; Hiccup would never be accepted anywhere because of who he was. Hiccup wasn't wanted by the Hooligans because of his powers, and he knew he wouldn't be welcome by the dragon hunters because he was a dragon rider and trainer.

"Hey, you down there!" Someone called as Hiccup looked up more, somewhat confused.

"Yes, you on the dock," Another mentioned.

"It's rather hard to meet you while we're all up here, and you're down there." Informed a woman, but she wore a gentle smile.

"Why don't you come up closer, Hiccup?" Viggo invited, motioning with his hand for Hiccup to join them. Hiccup gulped a little and started his way up the dock he was on towards the rest of them while attempting to keep his face neutral, or at least smile a bit.

"It might be easier to talk if we don't have to shout across the docks," Ryker added.

"We promise we don't bite!" Called a giggling female teenager.

Oh, great. So they know I'm nervous… Hiccup thought.

"We also promise not to riot in protest about Viggo and Ryker bringing a dragon rider to a dragon hunter island!" One of the men laughed with a few others.

"Or throw you off the island!" Another informed.

Hiccup made it up to Viggo and Ryker, as the males put one arm each over Hiccup's shoulders, proudly displaying him before their tribe. "Is my nervousness that noticeable?" Hiccup mumbled shyly.

"It was undoubtedly expected, dear," Olga laughed a little. "And perfectly fine," She added.

"But you have nothing to be nervous about. Perhaps there were issues between us in the past, but that's behind us." Viggo said.

"And we're friends now," Ryker added with a nod.

"If Viggo and Ryker say you're alright to be trusted and friends with, then you're good with us too. That's just how we are." A male mentioned.

"We're always better together, stronger side by side, than apart," Viggo told Hiccup.

"A tribe that works together succeeds together," Ryker stated.

"And a tribe that stands together wins together," The rest replied.

Hiccup let the words sit in his head a few moments. "Amazing that some people don't get that concept…" Hiccup remarked softly, but Viggo, Ryker, and those standing close enough to Hiccup heard it.

"Well, my boy," Viggo smiled. "We do understand that concept, so as long as you're with us," He paused.

"Then you get to enjoy it with us. You might not be a member of the tribe, but you're here as our guest, so you will be treated as if you were one of us while you're with us," Ryker finished for Viggo.

"Precisely, big brother," Viggo nodded. "Now, come along and meet everyone. I believe tonight calls for a-," He stopped and looked around. "Where are your friends?" He wondered curiously.

"Uh, right here? I'm standing with you guys," Hiccup blinked, not understanding what he meant.

"Did you make friends with all the dragon riders, are they coming?" A woman asked.

"No, just Hiccup," Ryker confirmed. "Viggo, what are you talking about?"

"The dragons," Viggo replied. "Are they hiding?"

"No, still on the ship below deck. I had told them to hang back for now," Hiccup responded.

"You brought…Dragons with you?" A girl questioned in surprise. Hiccup felt the nervousness start to bubble again.

"They're here? Now?" Another female stared as Hiccup sort of glanced down, shying away. Maybe he was okay with them, but not the dragons.

"Of course, they're Hiccup's friends. I couldn't very well tell him to leave them behind, that wouldn't be right." Viggo informed brightly.

"Well, why didn't you say so!" A few laughed. Hiccup blinked again, having not been ready for such an excited reply.

"Are you really friends with dragons?"

"Is it true they can be super docile?"

"Are they easy to train?"

"Can dragons and humans form bonds?"

"Do you have a favorite dragon?"

"Are you bonded to a dragon?"

"Can you weally wide a dwagon?"

Hiccup thought the last question was cute, and it came from a two or three-year-old who was creeping out from behind her father's leg. "Okay, okay. Hiccup is going to be with us for a bit, so I'm sure that we don't have to ask him everything all at once." Ryker remarked to save Hiccup from the feeling of being overwhelmed.

"But-!" Someone tried.

"The lad hasn't even had a chance to settle in yet, and it's dinner time. I'm sure Hiccup and the rest of us who have been at sea for months would like to relax," Viggo mentioned.

"Can I ask one thing?" Came a female voice that Hiccup located belonging to a teenage girl with auburn hair and dark brown eyes.

"Runa, what did I just say?" Viggo sighed. The teenager folded her arms and huffed; it reminded Hiccup of himself when he was younger.

Hiccup smiled a little. "It's okay, Viggo. You can't blame them for being curious," I told him. "So…The answer is yes to everything asked before, and…What would you like to know?" Hiccup looked at the one Viggo called Runa.

"How'd you get into the business of riding, training, and protecting dragons?" Runa wondered.

"That's…A long story that starts five years ago," Hiccup said as Runa pouted a bit. "But the short version is that I came across a dragon that would have been an easy kill, and found that I couldn't do it. I couldn't kill him; I wouldn't. I spared his life and let him go."

"Why? What made you feel you couldn't? Decide that you wouldn't?" Runa inquired.

Viggo sighed and closed his eyes, so did a few others. Hiccup gathered that perhaps Runa was a bit like him with being curious and needing to understand things. "When I found that dragon, he was wounded and unconscious in the forest because I'd shot him down. I suppose I didn't feel it was right to kill him when he was defenseless. I wouldn't want to be attacked or killed when I was down and couldn't have a fighting chance, and also, I'm not a God, so I don't think or feel I have the right to decide who lives or dies, be they dragon or human." Hiccup explained softly.

"What happened when you let him go?" The girl beside Runa asked.

"He pinned me down, roared, then let me go." Hiccup smiled with a shrug.

"What kind of dragon was he?" Runa pushed. "You keep saying he, so it sounds like this was more than a I spare you, and you spare me type of deal."

"It was more than that. He's the dragon that got me into riding, training, and protecting dragons," Hiccup stated.

"You still didn't say what kind of dragon he is," Runa noted.

Viggo groaned. "Runa…It was supposed to be one question,"

"Oh, let her be, Viggo. Not every day you meet someone who does things in the same field, but the opposite of yourself." Hiccup reminded. "She's curious, and I don't mind. Dragons are kind of my thing; I'm never going to deny anyone wanting to know more. Relax a little, you and the crew on the ship were the same way," He teased. "But as for what you said…" Hiccup looked at Runa. "I can tell you what kind of dragon he is, or I can show you?" I offered with a smile. Runa and maybe everyone else got excited and nodded. "Alright, hang on. But no weapons…"

"With you here, Hiccup, weapons probably won't ever be necessary to stop the dragons because you'll just do your trainer thing and befriend them," Ryker chuckled. "Go on,"

For some reason, that kind of made Hiccup feel alright about being here, that they wouldn't draw their weapons to attack any dragons with him there. "Okay. Mind the space, though. I call one of them…And they will all come." Hiccup put his middle and thumb fingers to the corners of his mouth and gave a short two whistles that followed one another, but used the same breath. The rest of the tribe was watching as three dragons flew out from the second level of Viggo and Ryker's ship.

"Woah…" A few gasped.

"That will be Stormfly the Deadly Nadder, Hookfang the Monstrous Nightmare, then Barf and Belch the Hideous Zippleback. Barf is the right, and Belch is the left. Don't ask me about the choice in the name because I didn't assign them," Hiccup pointed out as the three dragons landed behind him. A fourth dragon appeared from the trees, a much larger Monstrous Nightmare, who landed next. "That there is Cinder, Titan Wing Nightmare," Hiccup informed. A screech like roar was heard. "And that would be Toothless," Hiccup finally turned slightly to see the other dragons shifting to the side to allow through a black dragon coming up the wooden ramp from the docks to the island.

"No way…"

"I thought they didn't let their victims live?"

"Aren't you supposed to hide and pray it doesn't find you?"

"The unholy offspring of lightning and death itself?"

"Everyone is warned not to engage this dragon…"

"I thought they were gone for good…"

"This guy spared its life, let it go, then it…Let him go?"

Oh, Hiccup did love the reactions he got when people either saw a Night Fury for the first time, able to be this close or realized that Toothless was harmless and extremely playful as long as you weren't threatening his rider. Toothless came right next to Hiccup and sat down on his back legs with a curious warble, looking around at everyone. "Runa, was your name, right?" Hiccup asked as the girl nodded with wide eyes, and Hiccup smiled. "I'd like for you to Toothless, the Night Fury,"

"H-Hi…" Runa managed, still in shock.

"You don't have to be afraid of him; no one does. Toothless wouldn't hurt anyone…Unless, of course, you hurt me. At that point, you're at his mercy. But otherwise, he's a playful and overgrown lizard," Hiccup stated as Toothless purred and rubbed against Hiccup's midsection for attention. Hiccup started scratching the top of his head, then under his chin. "See?"

"It's incredible…" Someone said, but Hiccup hadn't caught who.

"And now it's also time to stop pestering the lad with all the questions," Viggo remarked. "As stated, Hiccup will be with us for some time, so there will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions about his Night Fury, the other dragons, along with the riding and training things." He added.

"Although, this might be a good time to figure out where the dragons are going to stay, Viggo," Ryker brought up. "Our village isn't built for…What's the word here? Dragon support?" He said.

"Good point," Viggo stroked his chin.

"The only one you gotta figure out would be Toothless, guys. The others I can take care of right now," Hiccup offered. "I'm not going to have you changing things in your village for me," He smiled. "Cinder," He called lightly as the Titan Wing shifted closer, rubbing his face to Hiccup's. "Yes, hi. I love you too. Remember what I told you to do when we arrived here?" The dragon nodded his head once. "Find enough for everyone?" The dragon nudged him with a purr. "Good boy. I need you to take Stormfly, Hookfang, Barf, and Belch there. At least through the nights." Cinder rubbed against Hiccup's face again before backing up and getting into the sky, then calling the three dragons Hiccup named.

Of course, the three didn't go, not wanting to leave Hiccup. However, Hiccup smiled, and they took their invitation to all get nudges against Hiccup, and he would rub their faces before they backed up. "Alright, it's only for the nights." Hiccup reminded before he stepped back, snapped his fingers, and motioned his hand towards Cinder. "Off you go," Stormfly, Hookfang, Barf, and Belch all took to the sky near the Titan Wing Nightmare. "Cinder is in charge. Do as he says, don't give him a hard time," Hiccup told them. Hookfang was already looking away from Cinder, growling, and grumbling under his breath.

"That smaller Nightmare seems to have an attitude on him," Someone chuckled.

"Hookfang? No, he and Cinder have a history as rivals," Hiccup sighed. "But you're going to behave, right, Hookfang?" He asked. Hookfang didn't respond. "Hookfang…" Still nothing. Cinder growled at him to reply to Hiccup, then Hookfang and Cinder start growling and roaring at each other. "Come on, you two…Don't start…"

"They're not going to fight, are they?" Viggo wondered.

"I'll stop them if they do," Hiccup promised.

"Not that I know you can't or anything, but I don't want to see you fight two Monstrous Nightmares, Hiccup," Ryker mentioned.

"It won't go that far," Hiccup smiled. Cinder and Hookfang were still verbally attacking one another with snorts, huffs, snarls, and growls. "Toothless, next time I say you're stubborn, remind me that Nightmares with a rivalry are far worse." He sighed some. Toothless gave a warble to him. "Break them up if you wouldn't mind, bud?" Toothless roared at the two Nightmares, then fired a blast past them to make them pull apart farther. "Thank you. Now, are you two done?" Both dragons grumbled with their heads down.

"Good. For the second time, specifically to you, Hookfang, Cinder is in charge. What happened was over a year ago, get over it. You two will find a way to be friends. Got it?" The two Nightmares nodded to him. "Grab dinner and settle down for the night. I'll see you tomorrow," Hiccup motioned his hand towards the forest. Cinder roared for the three to follow, and then they were gone over the trees. "Life of a dragon trainer and peacekeeper," Hiccup sighed, shaking his head before he noticed everyone looking at him. "What?"

"I don't get it."

"You just tell them what to do, and they listen?"

"You scolded them like children,"

"Can we keep him?"

"This kid is awesome!"

"Are you going to stay?"

"Can he stay forever?"

Hiccup wasn't sure if he should be honored or laugh, these people really did seem to be okay with anything. "Alright, we're not doing this again with all the questions," Ryker rolled his eyes.

"And on the keeping him, that's a no. Hiccup is our guest, not our prisoner. The matter of staying, though," Viggo paused, looking at Hiccup. "I'm not opposed to it, but it is his decision if he'd like to stay with us," Hiccup wanted to look surprised, but with their conversation earlier on the ship during lunch; Hiccup kind of got the feeling already that Viggo and Ryker were trying to hint about their tribe being okay with Hiccup being a dragon rider, and he'd be accepted by them. However, Hiccup knew that while the dragon-related things might be okay, the hunters didn't know about his powers, and that could change views in a heartbeat.

"But now is not the time to worry about it," Ryker added in, seeing the worry and doubt creeping into Hiccup's eyes. "Hiccup is here as our guest in thanks for the successful year. And will be staying through until the next season begins, that much has been decided for now. When the end of that period comes, if Hiccup desires to remain longer, or…Forever; he is more than welcome."

"Now, I think it's time we all disperse to enjoy dinner. We can celebrate being home and an outstanding year tomorrow night," Viggo announced. "Come, Hiccup, let's get your things from the ship as I'm sure you left them in the chamber while we unloaded," He invited.

"Okay," Hiccup nodded.

"Then, we'll head to our home and get you all set up in your room," Ryker smiled.

"Yes, I believe we're considering the place, brother," Viggo chuckled.

"It's not like anyone is using it, and with a little remodeling, I think we might just be able to get Toothless in there with you," Ryker added.

"Alright, thank you," Hiccup said gently; he wasn't quite ready to be away from Toothless for extended periods after what happened. Hiccup was still taking everything in, but it was hard to see as darkness had fallen, and most of what he saw was only lit by lanterns or torches.

"We know you don't like to be far from him, or he from you," Viggo smiled. "You've done a lot for us, Hiccup. I think we can manage a small accommodation such as allowing you to room with your dragon," He said. Hiccup still didn't feel like he'd done a whole lot, but he wasn't up to debating it with either brother right now. Hiccup was tired and ready to eat something and sleep the rest of the night in a bed that was in a room, but not on a boat. Hopefully, tomorrow, or the following day, he could work on Toothless's flying rig.

. . .

[Hunter Isle]
[Grimborn House]

It did not take long for the brothers, Hiccup, and Toothless to gather Hiccup's belongings and make their way to the Grimborn Residence. Hiccup wasn't taking in many details of layout, terrain, or anything right now; it was dark and late. Hiccup could see everything tomorrow, and he was sure he'd end up with a full tour. However, Hiccup did notice that the home was at the back of the village, higher up, and set up to see the entire town from its position. The house was big, three stories, and not built like the homes on Berk. These were a bit more advanced, or that's what Hiccup had gone with at first look when they approached it.

As Hiccup also noted, Ryker and Viggo shared a home, which wasn't uncommon for a family to do. Hiccup assumed that this house had been standing for quite some time, and always owned by the Grimborns. Hiccup recalled the brothers mentioning that the hunter tribe was started by their family, so their family was still the one in power out of respect for the tribe's founding family.

"And here we are, Hiccup," Ryker stated.

"The Grimborn Hut," Viggo introduced as he opened the double doors and guided Hiccup inside, then Toothless followed when Ryker motioned for him to go on inside. Ryker followed, closing the doors with Viggo's help. Hiccup was beside himself at the interior; you could tell it was the chief of the tribe's home. It was nothing like what he and his dad shared on Berk.

"Wow…" Hiccup was still in awe. "It's amazing…And big. I could fit two of my dad's house in here, and there'd still be room for a dragon stable…"

"Just wait until you get to see everything tomorrow in the daylight," Came a female voice, Hiccup looked to see a woman with green eyes and medium autumn-colored hair.

"We thought it would be best to hold introductions until now so that everyone wouldn't try to give you their names at once. We'd never get to eat dinner," Another woman spoke; she had honey-brown eyes and light brown hair.

"Now, where are the rest?" Ryker wondered.

"Right here," Said a male voice. Hiccup saw that this man had pale green eyes and dark brown hair. Next to him was a younger teenager with dark brown hair also, then honey brown eyes.

"The girls?" Viggo arched a brow.

"Are they ever ready on time?" The teenaged male chuckled.

"No," The group sighed. It reminded Hiccup of Snotlout and the twins because they were never ready, even with a week's notice.

"We're here!" Informed a young girl who had light brown hair and dark brown eyes. Hiccup saw her dragging down the girl who wanted to ask him so many questions about why he was a dragon rider, trainer, and protector earlier. The girl being dragged by her wrist with dark auburn hair and brown eyes. Hiccup believed her name was Runa. Hiccup guessed that all of these people were part of the Grimborn family, or worked for them.

"Well. Now that we're all here, I think we should introduce ourselves and then sit down for supper?" The woman with green eyes suggested.

"Yes, that would be best. I know my brother, and I enjoy an early night. How about you, Hiccup?" Ryker asked.

"Maybe not sleep, but could use the time to find my land legs again. I've never spent so much time on a boat in my life," Hiccup shrugged with a smile.

"I think Ryker and I both understand that feeling of wanting to be on land after so long at sea," Viggo nodded. "Now then, let's get this underway," He added. "I suppose I'll start as a man of the house," He smiled. "I am Viggo Grimborn, Chief of the Dragon Hunter Tribe."

"Ryker Grimborn, Second in Command of the Dragon Hunter Tribe," Ryker stated.

"I am Truda Grimborn," Spoke Truda, the woman that had autumn hair and green eyes. "Viggo's wife and Chieftess of the Dragon Hunter Tribe," She smiled. Hiccup was surprised, Viggo was married?

"Hertha Grimborn," Hertha said gently; she was the woman with honey brown eyes and light brown hair. "I am Ryker's wife,"

Okay, so Viggo and Ryker are married. Didn't see that coming. Hiccup thought.

"These are our children," Viggo continued softly. "My son, Brynjar," He motioned to the male who had green eyes and dark brown hair. "And my daughter, Runa," He added.

Oh, so Runa is Viggo's daughter. It makes a lot of sense why he named her earlier in not asking me questions. So the other two must be Ryker and Hertha's kids. Hiccup noted silently.

"And these two belong to us," Hertha giggled a bit.

"Our daughter, Vera, and our son, Agnar," Ryker introduced.

"You have a wonderful and beautiful family," Hiccup said respectfully. "It's a pleasure and honor to meet you all," He added. "So I guess to keep up the formality here…I'm Hiccup, and this is Toothless; he's my bonded dragon and best friend,"

"What's your last name?" Vera inquired.

Hiccup paused a moment; he didn't want to use it. "Raseri," Hiccup replied. It meant Fury in Norwegian, and as far as Hiccup was concerned, Toothless was his brother, just as a dragon and his only family left.

Ryker and Viggo both knew it was a lie, and Hiccup saw that surprise and curiosity rise on their faces. However, they got the message without Hiccup having to say anything at all. Hiccup had said to Johann that Hiccup Haddock was dead, so he wasn't using Haddock anymore. When the brothers noticed their kids and wives about to ask more, Viggo stepped in.

"I think we should get to eating dinner before it becomes cold," Viggo offered.

"Yes, there will be plenty of time later or in the days that Hiccup is with us to talk more, but it's getting late, almost 7:00," Ryker mentioned.

"Oh, yes!" Truda and Hertha hurried to get dinner set out. The kids helped as Hiccup mouthed a thank you to the brothers before they led him over to the table. Once everything was out, and the diners were served, they began to eat with Viggo and Ryker attempting to pull their families' attention away from asking about Hiccup, who was very ready to wash up a little, change, and go to sleep.
