Chapter 19
McCarty House
Forks, Washington
April 2034 – 4:00 p.m.
Emmett was in the garage working on a shelf that Rosalie wanted for the living room. With his back to the open garage door, he didn't see Jasper walk up the driveway. In fact, he had no idea the young man was even in his presence until his wrist was grabbed and his hand shoved unceremoniously in front of the circular saw he was using. Immediately, blood started spurting out of the place where his severed fingers used to be.
He screamed, attempting to grab his hand back, but Jasper's grip was unrelenting.
"Look at me," Jasper said, the tone of his voice brooking no argument.
Emmett turned to look at him, body shaking from his injuries.
"If you ever, ever put your hands on my girl again, you will lose a hell of a lot more than three fingers, you stupid fuck. Don't fucking test me on this."
Jasper made sure he locked eyes with the man for a good minute to ensure he understood exactly what would be coming for him if he did not follow his instructions. Then he turned and walked calmly out of the garage and down the street.
Emmett released a breath, stomach churning, at both the threat and the pain from his hand. The door leading to the kitchen opened and Rosalie stuck her head in the garage.
"Everything okay? I thought I heard a screa—oh my God, Emmett!" She screamed upon seeing his bleeding hand. "What the hell happened? Here, oh shit, let's get that wrapped up."
She rushed over to her husband, wrapping his hand in the tea towel she'd been carrying. She pulled out her phone and dialed 911, telling them she needed an ambulance and her address before turning back to her husband.
"Emmett, what happened?"
"I h-had an accident with the saw," he said, too terrified to admit the truth.

Carlisle finished knotting the last stitch on the man's mangled hand—such a shame, a man as young as this one to lose three of his fingers in a tragic accident. Removing his gloves, he turned to pick up the man's chart, doing a double take at his last name. Despite his son being involved with this man's daughter for several months, he'd never met Emmett McCarty, or his wife. Neither had Carlisle's wife. He figured it was time to fix that. He would wait for Emmett to wake, introduce himself.
He walked out of the OR and instructed the porter to take Emmett to a recovery room to sleep off the anesthesia, then headed over to the nurses station to ask if anyone had updated Emmett's wife of his status. Being assured she knew he was out of surgery and resting, Carlisle went to his office to finish his notes.
His phone rang just as he wrote the last word, and he closed the file noting it was Esme on the line.
"Hello, my love," he said.
"Carlisle?" Esme said, sounding upset.
Immediately, Carlisle was on alert. "What? Esme, what is it?"
She sighed. "Well, the kids are here, and you know how they are."
He did know how they were. "Are you okay there? You could always leave for a bit, get some fresh air. I'm sure..." He coughed. "I'm sure they will be finished soon."
She huffed a bitter sounding laugh. "Yeah, I'm sure you're right. Carlisle. Their behavior is not okay. They are disrespectful, they are rude, and they don't care who they upset."
He sighed. "I know, Es, I know. Well, her parents are in the ER tonight. Her father had a very bad accident with a circular saw. Maybe I should introduce myself and we can set up a meeting or something. Talk to them about what we should do."
She agreed that would be a great idea.

"Dr. Cullen?" Nurse Mallory was standing in his open door. "You asked to be informed when Mr. McCarty woke up?"
"Yes, Ms. Mallory, I did, thank you."
Carlisle rose to his feet and walked down the hall to Room 4, where they'd moved Emmett after he woke in recovery. He wanted the man to stay overnight to ensure the stitching held.
He knocked on the door, waiting to hear a "come in," before he entered.
"Mr. and Mrs. McCarty, I'm Dr. Cullen," he said, noticing Emmett paling at the sound of his name.
"I worked on your hand, Mr. McCarty, and I am sorry we are meeting under these circumstances. But I feel it is long overdue, to be honest."
Mrs. McCarty looked confused for a half-second before realizing this must be Jasper's father. She rose to her feet, crossing over to him and shaking his hand. "It's a pleasure to meet you, and yes, it should have happened a long time ago. Please call me Rosalie, and this is Emmett."
She motioned to Emmett who was visibly shaking at this point. "Please leave."
Both Carlisle's and Rosalie's shock was evident.
"Get out, please, go. I-I don't want you in here." Emmett looked away, clearly serious.
Carlisle was unsure why the man reacted that way; however, seeing that Emmett was in some discomfort, he did not want to upset him further. "Yes, of course, I am sure you would like to rest. I'll send in the nurse with some pain medication and will come back and check your hand in the morning before I discharge you."
Rosalie waited until Carlisle had left before berating her husband for how rude he was to the man who had helped him when he needed it.
A little chagrined, Emmett felt bad. However, he was afraid the man was the same as the son. After all, Jasper had to learn his behavior from somewhere. It completely escaped Emmett's notice that his daughter was just as evil as Carlisle's boy, and yet, he and his wife were not.
