Chapter 22- "healing"
(Bertha perspective)
(Later that night)
I was leaning over my desk looking at a lot of different documents from the other tribes; peace treaties, blood feuds, alliances and trade deals. My brain is turning to mush. Hiccup helped a lot with these. He was really smart and you could tell that he thought of things logically. I'm glad that Hiccup will soon be able to help Cami with all this.
Then I heard the crunching of gravel.
The door opened.
"You're home early." I said without looking up.
"Yeah when Snotlout won't shut up it tends to make people wanna get as far away from him as possible." Hiccup said angrily
My head perked up, I had never heard Hiccup angry before.
Then I saw Thuggory, he looked both furious and a tad bit sadistic at the same time.
"What happened to you three?" I asked
"Snotlout." the three of them answered in unison
None of them realised that they had all spoken in unison, they were too damn angry
"Care to elaborate?" I asked
"Before we tell you I want to tell you to give him hel!" Thuggory said menacingly
"What he means is don't hold back from punishing him, Mogadon will want to punish him too." Hiccup said
I looked at Cami who had barely said a thing.
"He accused me of whoring myself with Hiccup AND Thuggory." she said
Both Hiccup and Cami covered their ears as I started spewing obscene insults about the Berkian boy
Thuggory simply had an amused grin on his face to accompany his expression from earlier.
After several intense moments I calmed down.
"Get some rest." I said through gritted teeth
After that I stormed out of the house.
I walked up to the hut that the people from Berk were in.
I didn't bother trying to be quiet.
I raised my foot and kicked forward.
I didn't bother being subtle either.
I walked in the door frame that was now lacking a door.
"Whuuah?" Stoick said sitting up
I walked up to the bed beside him and punched the lump at the head of the bed
It was soft, too soft to be a person.
"Where is he?" I growled
Astrid walked in with small twigs in her hair and mud on her legs and lower body she held a double sided battle axe and looked exhausted.
"Where is who?" she asked
"Snotlout." I said angrily
"He's at the healer after those burns he got from Thuggory's sick hatchets." Tuffnut said excitedly
"He has to leave." I said
"That's my heir you're talking about." Stoick said
"And this is my island and therefore my healer, my hut, my bed, my food, my future-son-in-law and my daughter." I growled threateningly
"Verywell we will leave as soon as the thing has ended." Stoick said
"He leaves now." I said firmly
"No matter what condition he is in."
"We ca…"
"Before you argue, I remind you that the boat he leaves on will be one of ours, unless all of you would like to return to Berk now in your own ship." I said angrily. Giving each and every person in the room a stern glare
Every disagreement died in their throats.
I stomped out the house and upto the healers hut
This time I opened it normally.
I walked in and found our village healer, Rasmos tending to a man from the Hystericks tribe.
Rasmos is a medium height very thin man who doesn't talk much and when he does its in a hushed whisper, the man never repeats himself so you must pay strict attention to what he says
He has a long goatee that hangs down to the top of his chest he has a bit of grey hair that covers his head and tapers off to points behind his ears.
"Rasmos where is the Jorgenson boy?" I asked
He pointed at a bed in the corner of the room
I walked over to the bed and stood over the sleeping Snotlout.
Rasmos probably put him under.
"Rasmos can you wake him?" I asked
He nodded and held up one finger to signify he had something to do before that.
I realised that the Berkians had followed me up here.
"You were all at the party right?" I asked pointing at the teens
Astrid nodded and the others all said yes
"What exactly happened?" I asked them.
"What have you heard?" Tuffnut asked
"I've barely heard anything." I said simply
"Well we were participating in the party and we were having a good time laughing and talking and… laughing." Ruffnut said
I turned and looked at Astrid and Fishlegs; the most trustworthy of the five
"Translated it means they hogged the ale and got drunk." Astrid said simply while crossing her arms
"ASTRID!…" Tuffnut whined
"Snotlout ended up walking up to Camicazi, Thuggory and Enginn and began whispering to them." Fishlegs supplied
"Knowing him he was probably trying to pressure Camicazi into being betrothed to him." Astrid sighed in exasperation
"After a while he came back and started to…" Tuffnut said unaware of the other teens cringing at what he was about to say.
"...Say that your daughter was a whore and was only hanging out with Thuggory and Enginn for the pleasure..." he continued oblivious to the nervous glances everyone was directing towards me
Then he noticed my facial expression
He quickly stopped talking.
Then I felt someone tapping my shoulder
I turned to see Rasmos with a bowl in his hands full of a clear colorless liquid.
He walked over to Snotlout and cupped his chin with one hand and brought the bowl near his mouth with the other.
Then he tipped the bowl far too quickly and drenched Snotlout on purpose.
"Pluh! Pluh!" Snotlout spat as he suddenly woke up
"A very rude awakening." Stoick commented
Rasmos merely shrugged his shoulders and walked away
"What is the meaning of this!" Snotlout asked angrily
"You called my daughter a whore." I said firmly
"Huh? No no you misheard I called her a boar." he lied
"Fishlegs?" I asked
"Uuummm ummm ummm ummmm…" he stuttered
I sighed and asked someone else.
"Astrid?"
"I couldn't quite hear what was said." she said staying in the gray area
"Ruff, Tuff?" I asked
"He said whore." they said in unison
"2 to 0." I said "majority rules."
"But what about Fishlegs and Astrid?" he asked
"They were undecided, making no one to prove your story." I said
"I will talk to Mogadon about your punishment." and you will leave in the morning, whether on a boat with the rest of the hooligans or on your own I don't care." I said
I walked out of the healer's hut and headed for Mogadon's hut
(Thuggory's perspective)
(after Bertha left to find Snotlout)
None of us went to bed like Bertha suggested. Instead we all sat in the kitchen
I sat on a chair backwards with my legs spread out around the backrest Cami sat on a stool fiddling with her fingers and staring at the floor and Hiccup was sitting on the couch's armrest facing slightly away from us.
"Wonder what Bertha's gonna do." Hiccup said absentmindedly
No one said anything else for several minutes
"Cami are you ok?" I asked
Hiccup twisted his body so he could see her
She continued to fiddle with her hands and stare at the floor
"Cami, talk to us." I said
"When Snotlout kissed me I thought I would be considered a whore. And now I am considered one for the complete opposite reason." she said sadly
"Hey! Cami, he can say what he wants, it doesn't matter." Hiccup said compassionately as he stood up and walked over to her
"Plus I don't think anyone believes him, he already has a reputation of being arrogant and petty." I said
"Thanks guys." she said quietly as Hiccup embraced her.
"I'm gonna go to bed ok guys." she said after a moment
"Ok goodnight." I said
"Sleep well." Hiccup said
She walked up the stairs and out of sight.
I could hear the creaking of the floorboards and then the creaking of her bed.
After a moment of silence between us I spoke.
"I'm surprised you two aren't cuddling in the same bed every night." I quipped
His face turned beat red in an instant.
"Thuggory stop." he said pleadingly
"Why? does it make you uncomfortable?" I joked
"Yes, so stop." he whined
"I wonder why it makes you uncomfortable?" I asked rhetorically
"Maybe it's the position, you should try a new one." I said as I winked at him
"Get your mind out of the gutter." he said
"Get your head out of the clouds." I retorted with a grin on my face
"Uuuggghhhh your so dirty minded." he complains
Bertha just so happened to walk in at that very moment
She looked at us in shock, she was probably surprised we were still awake.
Everyone was silent for several moments.
"So what's Snotlout's punishment?" I asked ending the awkward silence
"Whau? Oh right… Snotlout will be leaving the island tomorrow… sailing in a bathtub wearing nothing but his underwear."
"HAHAHA!" Hiccup burst out laughing
"The bathtub and lack of clothing was Mogadons idea." Bertha said wiping a tear of laughter out of her eye
"Would ya keep it down?" Cami shouted from upstairs
"Sorry hon." Bertha and Hiccup said in unison
They both looked at eachother
Hiccup looked afraid that calling her hon was stepping over the line, Bertha was surprised that he had called her that, and me, well I was laughing so hard that I fell off my chair.
After an awkward goodnight I left the house and went to mine and went to bed.
(Hiccup's perspective)
(early the next morning)
I heard knocking on my window.
I groggily opened my eyes and walked to my window
"Hey." Thuggory whisper-yelled from below me
"Can we talk?" he asked
I nod and step away from the window
I tiptoe down the stairs and to the front door.
I step out into the fresh morning air
"I want a dragon." Thuggory says eagerly
"A friend that is a dragon?" I asked clarifying
"Yeah whatever, I want one." he says excitedly
"Ok we'll go later today." I said
"YES! He half whispers half shouts as he pumps his fist
Then he runs off in the direction of his hut.
I was surprised; I had never seen Thuggory this excited before.
I walk back inside tiptoe up the stairs and open the door to my room
I take one step in before I'm tackled from behind.
I land on my bed with Cami sitting on top of my back with her knees pinning my arms.
"What did Thuggory want?" she asked
"Oh and good morning to you, too sunshine." I said sarcastically.
She doesn't get off me
"Fine. he wants to train a dragon as well." I whispered
She finally lets me up.
I lay on my bed tired
I feel a warmth beside me
I turn my head to see Cami
"Ummm uhh uhh Cami would uuuhhh your mother approve of you ummm uhhh snuggling here?" I stuttered
"She'll be fine," Cami said annoyed
"Plus we are betrothed." she said slyly
"I almost forgot about that." I said
"Well I hope you haven't forgotten the day you proposed." she said humorously
At least I remember our first date." I chided
"I'm gonna have to work extra hard on our wedding day so you will remember it." Cami said laughing
"What's this about weddings, proposals and first dates?" Bertha asked from outside the door
"Ummm ummm uhhh nothing." I said frantically
"Just joking around." Cami said
"Hhhmmmmhhhhmmm…" Bertha said
"Now go to sleep." Bertha said
So Cami left my room and returned to her own. As soon as Cami closed the door to my room I felt like I was back on Berk, in the winter wearing nothing. I felt like I was freezing-to-death.
Eventually I fell asleep.
(Cami's perspective)
(after Hiccup fell asleep)
I was lying in my bed listening to Hiccups breathing through the wall, after a while it grew quieter.
He was asleep. I quietly stood up off my bed and tiptoed out my room and into his. Keeping to the shadows I tiptoed over to the side of the bed and crawled in beside Hiccup. I brought my knees up to my chest and wrapped my arms around them and I fit my head beneath his chin and my feet above his knees.
And I fell asleep feeling content in his embrace.
