Fighting for LoVe
Chapter 22: Whispers
Logan
I was beginning to feel claustrophobic as I watched the men entering the house. I couldn't quite see the men's faces but could tell they were big from the way they were walking around the living room. "Shh!" I quietly say as I pull the muzzle tighter on Rosie who was whining. Meg moved closer to me just as Veronica did. I moved toward where we came in and began to flick on a few switches. A low beam of light came on as a few monitors flickered near the wall we came in. We could see the men walking around the house and could hear them speaking.
"I thought Liam said they were here," one of the men snapped as we waited while they walked by our hiding space.
"He was sure that the old man had left from this house, or at least this is where that dumb Deputy followed him from," another man said as they began banging on the walls.
"Well they couldn't have just vanished. Either they are here, or they aren't. Tear the house apart," a third man snapped as he pulled out a phone. I turned around to find both Meg and Veronica huddled together.
"They're going to find us aren't they," Veronica questioned softly as I pulled her to me.
"No. I made sure this room wasn't anywhere on the floor plans nor does it have hollow walls like normal houses would. This house is soundproof. We could hide here safely, but I think a change in scenery is needed," I said as both girls nodded their heads. I pulled out a duffle bag and stuffed Rosie into it. I didn't need her to get loose, nor to cause any trouble. I then handed Meg a smaller duffle bag that held money, id's and a few other things we would need.
As I reached for Veronica's hand, I felt her stiffen a little as I opened a secret passageway. "What," Veronica questioned uneasy about what was going on. I pushed Meg a little for her to go ahead of us as I turned on a flashlight to show the path.
"It's a tunnel out of the house into the side of the cliff toward the beach, but behind the shrubs to keep people from seeing us," I said softly as I nudged Veronica a little to close the entryway. It would be one thing if they got into the secret room, but I would never give them the easy way of finding us through this passage. We had been walking a couple of minutes when I could feel the fresh air coming into the small tunnel. I felt even more relieved when I could see partial light shining through the shrubs ahead of us. I moved toward the front past Meg as I moved the shrubs slightly to check if anyone was near us or not. I couldn't see anyone, so I moved it out of my way and stepped out into the night air. I looked around and then motioned for the girls to follow me.
"Where will we go?" Meg questioned as we walked toward an SUV across the small lot. I looked back to make sure I had put the shrub back in place.
"I don't know right now, but we're not safe where we are," I replied as I clicked the key to open the doors to the SUV as Veronica got in the back with Meg and Rosie. "We have to go around the house to leave so why don't you two duck down and as soon as we are past the drive, I'll let you know," I said as both laid side by side on the seat. I looked slightly toward where our home was, but not for long as I watch two men exit the front door.
"Logan," Veronica questioned as I looked back toward her just as I pulled up to a stop light.
"It's clear, do me a favor and call your dad on one of the burners to let him know we have been compromised and what should we do," I state as I head toward the center of town.
Veronica
I thought we were safe at the house, but after having to flee in the middle of the night I wasn't sure we'd be safe anywhere. I had dug around a little in the bags Logan had packed to find a burner phone and dialed my dad's number.
"Are you safe?" was the first thing my dad said as he picked up.
"Yea, for the time being we are in a SUV driving around," I mumbled as Meg placed her hand on my knee.
"That's a relief. I assume Logan's driving," he asked as I chuckled.
"Yea, he got us out of the house just as Liam's men entered through the patio door," I said as I felt my stomach lurch when we passed by Mama Leones.
"Does he know where you guys are heading, or will you be staying in Neptune?" he asked. I really didn't know what Logan had planned but at this moment he would take me out of the country if it meant protecting us.
"Logan, do you know where we're heading," I asked. He pulled over and took the phone I had in my hand putting it on speaker before talking.
"I don't know. I thought we were safe at the house, but they found us there," he muttered as I could hear the sigh my dad made.
"Yea, I thought so as well. I think your best bet would be to hide in plain sight. Let me see," my dad says as I hear the flipping of papers. "Yes, this could work," he replied before answering. "I have a friend who works over at The Grand. I'll have him meet you at the side entrance where the workers go in and get you a room," he says as I see the calm look come back over Logan's face.
"Okay, is there a secret word or anything we need. I want to make sure this guy is your friend and not someone else," Logan said as I look toward Meg who was brushing Rosie's fur keeping her quiet.
"Yes, I think there should be. Um let me think, how about private dick," my dad says as I chuckle at his sense of humor.
"Alright," Logan replied just shaking his head. "Thanks, we'll let you know when we're settled," he finished as he hung up the phone and took the memory card out and tossed the burner out the window. The drive to The Grand seemed to take forever even though it was only a couple of miles from where we had stopped. Once Logan pulled into the parking lot and went to the side entrance, I just hoped that things would settle down.
Logan got out of the SUV and walked toward the entrance just as it opened. I saw a man standing in the doorway and he looked Logan up and down before I saw them exchange some words and Logan headed back to where we were waiting for him in the vehicle. "Come on. Chase said he has a 5 minute window to slip us in before the cameras come back on," Logan said as he took Rosie still in her bag from Meg and ushered us to where the man was waiting for us. I heard a beep go off just as we entered the room.
"That was cutting it close," the man said as he chuckled. "You sure have grown up," he stated as he motioned toward me. "I used to work with your dad at the Sherriff's department before he got kicked out. Your mom would bring you in, but you were a lot younger than and not hiding from the criminals either," he replied smiling.
"We really appreciate this," I finally found my words as he nodded his head and moved around the room.
"I was able to book this room under the name Meg Lynn. I have someone who works in the kitchen that will bring your meals and anything you would like within reason," Chase said as he handed us a small phone. "This only works within this building. Use it only when ordering send a text and then if danger arises, I'll send one to. You guys should be safe here. I live on the premises so I can be here if anything does happen," he replied as he went to the door and walked out. I wanted to go outside to thank him but was too drained to do anything other than flop down on the bed closer to the balcony. It was exhausting running for your life for really no reason.
