Summary: I love you.
Ruby always had a hard time taking her eyes off Weiss; there was just so much to admire about her. It was always the trivial things that Weiss did which often captured her attention. Small things that everyone else, except her, would never bother to notice.
Like, how her nose cutely crinkled in a certain direction. How her eyebrows would pinch together whenever she encountered a difficult set of problems on her homework assignment. Maybe even how a small section of her lips would drop on the right whenever she was thinking, and how her face would soften when she was at rest.
All these little things were what made Weiss perfectly human, so perfectly… Weiss.
"You're not studying," Weiss noted, without needing to look up from her book.
That was another thing Ruby added to her long and growing list of what she liked about Weiss. Weiss would periodically steal glances at her because, well, how else could she have known Ruby was neglecting her books?
"I am studying," Ruby said, not taking her eyes off Weiss from across the table.
Weiss refused to look up from her work and said, "you're not looking at your book." Interestingly enough, Ruby noticed that Weiss' hand was motionless. Her concentration must have slipped because she had stopped writing.
"But… I am studying," Ruby promised her. She leaned on her elbows as she stared at Weiss with a smile that was twice the size of Vale.
She loved to see Weiss blush. Her beautiful, fair skin flushed with a tinge of red. Not enough to cover her whole face, but enough to perfectly cover small sections on her cheeks. By force of habit, Weiss would move her bangs off her face every time she was blushing and embarrassed, she would do this even if there were the smallest amount of strands covering her face.
To Ruby, that was one of the world's most precious sights, but nothing else could compare to when Weiss looked at her.
Those deep blue eyes moved up from their boring books and bore into sterling silver. They were much more tender now than the cold, scripted glares Ruby had received in their earlier days. They were just as warm as the colors of a beautiful sunset trickling into the early evening sky.
"You should concentrate on your work, Ruby." Weiss reminded, as she tapped onto Ruby's book with her pen to emphasize her point.
Ruby didn't budge. Instead, she continued to admire her from across the table because she loved how much Weiss cared about her. She may not have worded her feelings in that exact way, but Ruby could tell there was an underlying secure attachment of love for everything she did and said.
All the effort Weiss had poured into tutoring her, all the time she had spent helping her in trivial tasks, all the steps she had taken to make her happy; they were all examples of Weiss' affection towards Ruby. It was her own way of saying 'I love you' in various forms.
"I can't." Ruby kept her eyes on Weiss, not looking away for even a single second. "You're distracting."
"M-Me?" Weiss sputtered incredulously, not understanding what Ruby meant by that. She spent most of her hour concentrating on homework and refrained herself from talking to Ruby. She was behaving like any other good student would.
Ruby laughed to herself after catching the genuine bewilderment on Weiss' face. Her face was very expressive, open and honest like a book. Clearly unaware that there were other ways to be distracting, Ruby happily spelled it out for her.
"Yeah, you're beautiful."
Ah, there it was again — Weiss pushed her fallen bangs behind her ear and blushed. Her eyes darted across the room looking at anything and everything but Ruby. Cute. Ruby scooted her chair back and made her way around the table to sit next to Weiss. She rested her cheek against her knuckles and leaned into the table again with another warm-hearted smile. The view was much better now that she had a closer look.
"Is that why you're looking at me like that?" Weiss mumbled. She tucked her chin into her palm and hid her massively blushing cheek with fanned fingers. She deliberately turned her head in the other direction, too embarrassed to make eye contact with Ruby.
"Yeah." Ruby did not miss a beat when she answered. "You're the most beautiful girl at this school. I could stare at you all day if you'd let me," she said without hesitation. She had the rare chance of seeing Weiss fidget in her seat with her eyes going wide from an angle. "Do you know what I like about you?" Ruby asked, her voice going soft and sweet, filled with love that was meant specifically for Weiss only.
Weiss dropped the volume of her voice to a whisper when she answered. "A lot of things."
"Like what?" Ruby already knew, but she wanted to hear it directly from Weiss.
"My eyes," Weiss eventually replied.
"Yeah…" Ruby whispered softly as if she was already spell-bound by Weiss' natural beauty. "They're beautiful."
Ruby loved how flustered Weiss got after receiving each and every compliment. She wondered if Weiss felt the butterflies inside her stomach, the same ones that wouldn't stay still in her own stomach. She wondered if Weiss' heart was also drumming rapidly. She wondered if Weiss felt the same, chest engulfed with an undeniable warmth, and if her body felt a rush of euphoria threatening to knock her over.
This time, Ruby beat Weiss to it as she reached over and tucked the loose strands of hair behind Weiss' ear. A darker shade of blush appeared on her cheek. Just from a single touch, there was a mountain of goosebumps appearing along Weiss' jawline.
Ruby thought her sweet gesture had rendered Weiss frozen and speechless, but impressively, the former heiress found her voice. It was quiet but still audible.
"They're like any other blue eyes."
"But none are quite like yours," Ruby reassured her. She caressed Weiss' hand back and forth like calm waves washing and receding at shore. Her finger tips gracefully traced in between the gaps of Weiss' fingers until she finally reached just below her chin.
"Weiss." Ruby gently coaxed Weiss to look at her. She patiently waited for those tightly closed eyes to open up. When they shyly did, Ruby stared into the sapphire gems that she would die for. "They're the kindest and warmest pair of blue eyes that I've ever seen. They're so deep that I could drown; and so beautiful that I forget how to breathe. I get lost every single time I look into them, and I like it. A lot."
Weiss' eyes fell but her lips traitorously broke into a small smile. She looked as if she could die from embarrassment, especially after how long they steadily held eye contact. It was a sign of vulnerability, and Ruby knew the world wasn't privy to this display of affection. It was reserved only for her.
"Do you know what else I like about you?" Ruby asked. Completely aware that Weiss was currently too shy to respond, Ruby answered her own question. "Your smile."
As if on cue, the curl of Weiss' lips stretched into one of the prettiest smiles Ruby had ever seen. It tugged at the corner of her eyes and pulled her cheek upwards. Small dimples appeared on both her cheeks and Ruby paused for a moment to savour the sight. She wanted to remember every single one of Weiss' smiles and the memories that came with them.
"I like it when your teeth show," Ruby murmured. Just like that, a row of pearls came out naturally from behind Weiss' lips. "The best part is when it comes with a laugh. Your eyes always glow when you're laughing."
Ruby scooted closer to Weiss until there was barely any room left between their chairs. She reached over for Weiss' hands, now clasped together, in her own lap. Cradling them until they loosened up ready for her to hold, Weiss' palms radiated a certain warmth she knew all too well. One that was more intimate than a hug and hotter than a kiss.
"I like our fingers laced together." Ruby gave her a tiny squeeze as she held on tight. Her lips parted into a small smile when Weiss squeezed back. "You're like the answer to my questions. It's like you're made for me — my other half. I can't imagine holding anyone else's hand. I love feeling the rough calluses on your hands and I love tracing your scars. They're a reminder of all the things we've been through together, and there's no one else I'd rather go through it with. I love everything about you, Weiss."
Ruby chastely pressed a kiss against the back of Weiss' hand. A lot of people have gossiped about Weiss being an embodiment of cold, they weren't incorrect but they weren't completely correct either.
Weiss was definitely cold to those who did not matter to her but when Ruby took one look into Weiss' eyes, she could see all the affection and emotions hidden beneath for her. Cold was not one of them — and definitely not in that moment.
Weiss willed her lips to say something, but felt betrayed when all that came out was a small gasp. Ruby continued peppering kisses on the same spot.
Ruby looked up from their intertwined hands and was pleased to have caught Weiss looking more flustered than the first time they went on a date together.
There was a certain desire on Weiss' face. It looked like she wanted to kiss Ruby but didn't know how to ask, or maybe she was too embarrassed to.
"Weiss," Ruby said. Her name tasted so sweet on the end of her tongue. She wanted to know if Weiss tasted sweeter now — no, Ruby already knew she did. She wanted Weiss just as much as Weiss wanted her back. "Can I kiss you?"
Weiss shyly looked around. They were in a public space and she wasn't one for public displays of affection.
"We're in the library…" Her voice shied out from her throat. She reached for her bangs again, however instead of hooking her hair around her ear, she ran it through the front of her hair. Her bangs fell gorgeously back to the side of her head which made her more irresistibly attractive.
"It's the holidays. There's no one else here but us." Their hands fell back into Weiss' lap, but Ruby reached towards Weiss' cheek and cupped one side. As Ruby expected, they were still warm from blushing. She gently brushed at the end of Weiss' scar with her thumb and asked again. "May I kiss you?"
Instead of a verbal reply, Weiss answered with a slight tilt of her chin and her eyes fluttered shut. She barely budged from her spot, so Ruby moved closer until their lips touched.
Their kiss was almost too light to feel, almost like a soft graze. It had happened so fast and ended too soon but it managed to cause powerful shivers down their spines and got their hearts buzzing.
Eyes still closed, Ruby waited for Weiss to make the next move. She didn't have to wait long because Weiss moved in for a kiss that was more than a light brush. She felt more of Weiss' lips pressed tenderly against her own. Her lips were difficult to succinctly describe. In the simplest of terms, they were full, warm, and wet. They were perfect, and with how Weiss emboldened her kisses, it scattered all of Ruby's thoughts until Ruby could not form coherent sentences.
Ruby tried to pull away, but Weiss chased after her lips, wanting more. Like magnets, they kissed again, and again, until Weiss slowed to tender pecks.
After the last kiss, she studied Ruby with warm, half-lidded eyes. Her eyes travelled from the flushed lips then to those glassy silver eyes that had been silently worshiping her. Weiss reached over to grab the hand still cupping her cheek, guided it to the swell of her chest and laid it over her heart.
"This is what you do to me," Weiss spoke quietly, her voice drawing back to its shell as the level of cheesiness just skyrocketed through the roof.
"Whoa…" Ruby's eyes doubled in size as she felt Weiss' heart almost bursting out of her chest. "Your heart is beating really fast."
Weiss nodded.
"Feel mine." It was Ruby's turn to guide Weiss' hand and lay it on top of her own heart now. She watched how Weiss broke into another beautiful smile after silently mouthing the word 'wow'. "No one does this to me but you. My heart is pounding like mad. Like, I'm really going crazy for you, Weiss. Like super crazy."
Weiss' cheeks blossomed into a royal red. Ruby locked onto those blue eyes before they looked down for the second time. They wanted to shy away again, but Ruby refused to let it happen. Without breaking their gaze, she guided Weiss' hand up to her lips and delicately kissed her palm. She laid several layers of the softest kisses in the world, and then the words left her mouth for the first time because that moment felt perfectly right.
"I love you, Weiss."
It was Weiss' turn for her eyes to round widely, but relaxed as soon as she softened into the gentlest smile.
"I love you too, Ruby."
This is my first story that got edited by someone that isn't me. Thank you to my lovely girlfriend for proofreading my god-awful writing. If my writing was hard on her eyes, then it must have been difficult for you as the readers. Sorry.
That being said, I want to know what you think about this style of writing. The main goal was to deliver this story in a smooth, simple way that would make reading and understanding a lot easier for you. Was it successful? Do you guys like how this was written? Or were you unable to tell because it didn't seem any different?
If you can leave your honest opinion about it, that would be awesome. I am no stranger to constructive criticism. If you guys do like how this story was delivered, my girlfriend will do her best to proofread most of my one shot works (excluding white rose week because it's coming up faster than she can actually edit).
