Chapter 24: VIOLET P. (again) Seeing Luna made me feel a little awkward. After all, we were supposed to kill each other. Hopefully the gamemakers won't be too mad and not decide to take it out on me. If I've made it to the top three, maybe I stand a chance at winning. I don't want to die. I creep behind some large rocks and cacti, enjoying the shadows. It's much cooler in the shade, compared to the scorching sun. Though I've been trying to stay invisible most of the time, my face and arms are terribly sunburnt. When I was with my family, Dash would say I'm an undercooked potato. Now I'm a bright red strawberry. Ugh. Vi, why would you do that? You just made yourself crave strawberries. The nice thing about being invisible and alone is that you get plenty of time to think. While I wait out Luna and Mary, I might as well reflect on my life. My life at home consisted of a lot of illegal activities. Both of my parents were addicted to being superheroes. Sure, they save lives, but it also meant responsibilities for Jack Jack and Dash fell on me. I'm sick of being the babysitter. I hate the Hunger Games, but when my name was called for District 3, I was a little happy. There's the possibility I'll die, but if I win, maybe I'll get the freedom to stop being a super and just enjoy normal life with Tony. I could let the next generation of superheroes take the lead. I leap to a new shadow, trying to avoid the sun's bright rays. My heart skips a beat as I nearly trip and twist my ankle, but I catch myself in time. "Violet…" Oh no. My blood runs cold and I freeze. I know that awful singing voice. "Luna…" I will myself to turn invisible, to hide before Mary Poppins could see me. I have to get away. She's the most dangerous tribute in the arena. She's also one of the only tributes in the arena. If she knows I'm here, I'm already dead. Hide! Turn invisible! Hurry! Force field! Something! I meet Mary's gaze as she walks around a tall saguaro cactus, a bloodied umbrella in hand. I'm too late. My chance at winning the games disappeared faster than I did.
