*5 years later*
"Alexander, come on let's go!" I tugged on his arm lightly. The damn man didn't want to ever want to go with me, but yet he still insisted that he goes with me for 'safety reasons'.
He dropped his pen, "Alright, alright. I'm coming. I just wanted to finish a writing this for Mr. Washington. It's one of his last official documents as President, and I want to make sure it's correct."
"Okay… I wanted to make sure you weren't trying to skip out on me. Although it's been five years, I could probably go alone now."
"I would feel much better if I was by your side."
"Then we need to get going. I told him last time that we would be there earlier than 3:30 and it's already 3:07."
We walked out of his office and I grabbed my coat. Alex followed suit, and pulled on his coat, grabbing the keys to the car as we headed out the door.
"We won't be late. It's only a few minutes down the road."
"To be early is to be on time, Alex!" We hopped into the car, and started our way to the jail to visit Thomas.
He laughed, "You're kids do not follow that rule, do they, Eliza?"
"No, but going into labor is a different story. And John wasn't late, William was. Oh! Is Peggy on her way to watch the kids?"
"I checked with her, she was going to be a smidge late. But I thought that would be okay because Phillip is 15 years old and he can baby sit for a couple of minutes until Peggy gets there to take care of William."
I relaxed, "Oh, okay. I just wanted to make sure they weren't going to be alone. I have no doubt that Phillip can handle things, but William is only 3 months old and John is only 5… I just want to make sure everything is okay."
"And everything is. Just breathe, sweetheart."
My phone dinged. Peggy texted me telling me that she was at the house.
"See?" He was being cocky again.
"Yeah, yeah." I rolled my eyes, "I just worry about William and John. Angie can handle things with Phillip but they are outnumbered 2 to 4. I have reasons to worry."
"I know, Betsy. And you do. Especially with William being an infant and both Phillip and Angie can't manage an infant."
"Which is why we have been hiring Peggy."
"Exactly. So you don't have a reason to worry, Eliza. They are safe and okay."
I nod. We continue the rather short drive in silence. I think about the long journey I told to get this far. It all started when Alexander thought that I should go see a professional for the recurring nightmares that I was still having about Thomas and about the incident that happened between us. Amy, my therapist, tried to just talk me through it, but it ended in panic attacks and no progress. She thought that maybe talking to Thomas about what I was going through and what I went through might help. I was on board with it because, not only did I promise him that I would visit anyway, but also because I was willing to do anything to help heal. Alex, on the other hand, wasn't super thrilled, but he was willing to do anything to help me heal. For the first few visits, I struggled with seeing Thomas. And I knew he struggled, too. We were both reminded of the past when we saw each other, so the first step was to fix that. Then, after those visits, we would talk for maybe 30 minutes about what had happened and he would apologize a million times and I would tell him that as long as he changed, the past would be forgiven. He was allowed to give me a hug once, but it was all doctor's orders. After those initial visits, I wanted to visit him so that way he had something to look forward to. Alex, again, wasn't exactly happy to let me do this, which is why he always comes with me on the trips to the jail.
When we get to the jail, we show our id's and walk into the visitation area. He was allowed to see me in person without the glass about a year ago and when that happened, we were both so excited.
He waited by the middle table with his hands still in cuffs.
"Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton, it is a pleasure to see you." He greets when he sees Alexander and I walk in.
We sit down together, "Hello, Mr. Jefferson. How have you been?"
"I've been pretty okay. Well, as okay as it can get from the inside. How have you two been?"
"Pretty good. William is a little devil sometimes, but we manage." I tell him.
"Babies tend to be little hellions until they are older. How's the rest of the Hamilton clan?"
"They are all pretty good. Phillip had a test that he aced and Angie is finally learning to sing and play that new song you recommend her."
"That's great news. How have you been, Alexander?"
"Busy. Mr. Washington's term is almost up, and he wants to pass a few things before he retires. I've been helping him with that."
"Well, that's all good news."
"So what has been new for you, Mr. Jefferson?" I ask him
"Well, I have finally been given parole. I will get out in a month, and I was hoping that when I get out, I can stay with you guys for a little bit. At least until I get my own place."
"Of course!" I look at Alex. He isn't thrilled, but this is good news. "We would be happy to help you out for a little bit. Just until you can get back on your feet."
"Thank you, so much."
"Well, it looks like you have to go. It was good to see you Thomas. I can't wait till you're out." I tell him.
"Thank you, Eliza. For keeping your words with me. See you back here in 2 weeks?"
"Sounds like a plan. Same time as always?"
"Same time as always. Good to see you guys."
"Good to see you, Thomas."
"Alright, bye."
We walk out after he leaves.
"That was a good visit." Alexander says.
"It was." I agree, "I can't wait for him to get out."
"Why is that?"
"Everyone deserves a chance to grow and change. You got one, I got one, and he deserves one, too."
"How did I get so lucky to have the best wives and best of women?"
"Just by the overwhelming smell of booze, the perfect timing, and a rather charming note to send you a letter."
He laughs lightly, "That's exactly how it went down."
"Yes, it is." I laugh with him. Hand in hand we walk back to the car, ready to go home and rest for a little bit.
Jefferson is getting his second chance. Alex got his after his affair. I got mine after my trial. And he will finally get his after his time is up in prison. We all deserve a shot. I got mine, he will finally get his.
