"I'm going to be honest with you. I'm rethinking this co-parenting arrangement. I think we're moving too fast."
"You said I can move in a few hours ago."
"That was before my child came home clinging to me saying she was scared I'm sending her away."
"She's overwhelmed."
"She's not ready to meet anymore of your family."
"That's ridiculous."
"I don't know what your family said to her. I do know she was smiling when she left my house this morning, and she came home saying she doesn't want to go with you anymore."
"Karen said that?"
"Yes."
"I have a right to see Karen."
"That's where you wrong. Every state has a putative father registry, and you didn't put your name on it. The adoption agency would not have been able to proceed with the adoption if you were on that list."
"I didn't know she was pregnant with Karen."
"It was your responsibility to stick around and find out. I'm letting you see her because I care about you as a friend. I don't have to let you anywhere near Karen."
"How much was the adoption?"
"That doesn't matter."
"How much money did you spend?"
"That's not important."
"I've done my research. I know it was at least $20,000. I'll write you a check."
"This isn't about money. I didn't buy a baby. I helped my friend. I promised Mellie that Karen would be my child. I waited to finalize the adoption because I wanted to make sure it was what she wanted. Mellie had two months to change her mind, and I would have let her have Karen. You were not part of the decision. You made yourself a deadbeat. You being here has interrupted her routines. She is not happy."
"You want me here because you need me. I know you hate it, but your single mom cape is not flying in the wind right now. You're always tired."
"So now you're blaming me for my pregnancy fatigue?"
"I can smile about one thing. When this baby is born, you won't have the upper hand with everything."
"You can see the baby. You are not taking my newborn out of the house and out of the United States until I say you can."
"I have a better idea. How about I take the baby home from the hospital, and I say when you can see my baby."
Fitz regretted saying those words as soon as they left his lips. The look in Olivia's eyes was pure fear. She looked away from him and walked to the door and opened it. "Get out of my house, and I don't want you to come back."
"Olivia."
"Stay away from Karen, or I will show you how much money I'm willing to spend. You will run out of money before me, I can promise you that."
"I shouldn't have said that to you. I would never take the baby or Karen from you."
"We are done talking. Goodbye Fitz."
"Okay, I will give you some space for a few weeks. I'll send you some pictures of Scotland."
