A/N: Update time!

OOOOOOOOOOOO

Sadie let out a whine as she crashed into the ground, pinned under Jacob. Her body hurt. Her heart hurt worse. Every day the pain kept getting worse and she kept putting her body through the torture of training under Sam's watchful eye. His wife, she didn't like it, but Sadie insisted she was fine to keep going.

Jacob snapped his jaws at her and backed off at the whispered command of Sam. Sadie tried climbing to her feet, but her heart ached and she fell again. She looked up at Sam as he walked over to her and crouched beside her. The white wolf snapped her teeth at him with a growl as he raised a hand to touch her, causing the rest of his watching pack to growl too, ready to protect their Alpha.

"Don't," Sam ordered, holding two fingers up to silence them.

You don't, Sadie thought to him, curling her paws into the ground and trying to push herself up before another spasm of pain went through her. Just leave me alone.

Sam's dark gaze held her own and he shook his head. "Young Wolf, you are suffering and fighting a battle that you cannot fight alone." He put his hand on her side and she cringed. "I think it is time to call the doctor to look at you."

Sadie shook her head. I don't do doctors…I don't do hospitals…You can go straight to Hell with that one, Sam…I can get up. I can fight.

Sam tapped his finger against her ribcage and she let out a little whine. "I think not. You're off. Change back. You're seeing the doctor." He turned his head. "Jacob…we're temporarily breaking one rule. Go. Summon Doctor Cullen."

Sadie's eyes widened in alarm and she twisted under Sam violently. Her body shrunk and she turned into her human form, battered and bruised with her hair wild. The girl's eyes stared into Sam's with Alpha meeting Alpha dominance.

"You said no to that," Sadie hissed, glaring at him. "You said they wouldn't come here. You said this was safe from them. That they would be safe from me."

Sam looked at her calmly. "Sadie, calm yourself. Nothing has changed. No one will take you away from here, unwillingly. You are safe. They are safe. Put your mind at ease." He put his hand on her shoulder and she shrugged it off, growling at him. "The doctor is the best at treating the supernatural, unfortunately, otherwise he would not be crossing the border."

Sadie growled and clambered to her feet. She stumbled out of the clearing that they were in by Sam's house and walked back towards the pack leader's house. She could smell food, it did not make her hungry. She could feel the grass under her bare feet, it did not bring her comfort.

What's wrong with me? Sadie shouted mentally to the Cosmos.

You need him…you need to be complete…you need…

Sadie jerked to a stop when she thought she heard her sister's voice. Her heart paused in it's beating. This was crazy. Her sister and all her pack was dead. She knew that. She had felt every single one of them die. Lost every single connection. And kept running. Running to here. Running to…

Emmett…

Sadie's heart clenched and the wolf coughed, tasting metal in her mouth. She brought a hand up and wiped it against her lips. The stain of blood was on her skin when she drew it away. The wolf girl sighed and headed into the house, making her way to the place where she slept and fell down onto it, drawing a blanket over her head.

This sucks…

OOOOOOOOOO

Sadie smelled Carlisle long before he entered the house and her heart thudded. She was thankful that he was alone, but why else would anyone come? Part of her had hoped that Emmett would have fought to come, but was again thankful that he hadn't. That giant dork would probably have ripped her up and carried her off the land and into the wild if he had his way.

"How is she?" Carlisle asked, not to Sadie.

"She suffers," Sam's voice said. "Everyday there is a fight between strength and pain. And she grows weaker for it while learning new skills."

Carlisle took an unnecessary breath. "I smell blood."

"She's been coughing," Sam's wife offered from somewhere that Sadie really didn't care to think about.

"Hm…" Sadie counted his footsteps – five – and then he was at her side, setting his bag down and looking at her blanket covered body. "Sadie…"

Sadie kept the blanket over her head. "Carlisle, go away, please. I love you and Esme, but go away."

"Still don't like doctors I see," Carlisle said and she couldn't almost detect a smile in his voice. He gently tugged the blanket lower on her and she looked at him with an annoyed expression. "But I need to remind you that not all doctors are your enemies. And perhaps this time, you could really use a look over."

Sadie hissed as she adjusted herself. "Uh-huh." She coughed and blood splattered her hand. "I'll tell you what's wrong with me. My body hates me. End of story." She drew a knee up to her chest and then the other one, hugging them. "It's been this way since I left. And it keeps getting worse. My chest hurts. I can't get enough air. My heart is beating too slow or too fast. And now, I think it's bleeding through something."

Carlisle's eyes scanned over her face as he listened to her heart beat without one of those dorky doctor devices she was so used to. A worry line developed between his brows and he pulled out a blood pressure monitor. Sadie grumbled as he used it on her and made notes. Sadie endured the basic health screening tests that Carlisle ran on her and then he shook his head as he gently prodded around – with permission – her chest and rib cage to see what he pain response was.

"I don't like this," he said, looking at her. "From what I can tell without running extensive tests, your heart is deteriorating in condition, Sadie. It's suffering and destroying itself."

"Great." Sadie mumbled, rolling her eyes as she shook.

"What could have caused this?" Sam's wife demanded, sounding horrified. "Did she get vampire venom in her?"

"No, that would have killed her much faster," Carlisle said, not sounding happy as he glanced at Sam like he knew that they both knew what was the cause.

"Sam?" Sadie said in a low voice, unable to keep her pained growl out of it. "What's going on? Why does it seem like I'm dying?"

"Because your heart is breaking itself into pieces," Sam told her in a low voice. "I thought that your Imprint on that giant vampire was weak and that the bonds tying you to him would not hold this kind of strength over you. It is clear to me now that all Imprints hold the same strength, they are hard to ignore, even with vampires in the mix. And you, Sadie, have Imprinted on that giant vampire across the border. Your spirit and your heart call for him and will forever call for him and will not be satisfied until you are with him again." He sighed. "You will suffer without."

Sadie ground her teeth together and stared at the wall.

"Do you think it's time for her to come back to the other side of the border?" Carlisle asked quietly.

"That is for her to decide."

The wolf orphan found many eyes on her at once and wished she could disappear. She met Carlisle's gaze. The good doctor. The one that took her in when she had nowhere else to go and had taken care of her so many times before in such a short amount of time. And then there was Sam – her opposite Alpha. A douche in her opinion at times. A pain in the ass always. But he too had opened his home to her when she was in need and tried to show her the ways of her kind. Both wanted her to thrive and here she was suffering. Because the only thing that could ease her suffering lay across the border between their people and was the very thing she had run away from.

"I need to stay for awhile longer," Sadie whispered, lowering her gaze.

"Sadie, you might not make it through awhile longer," Carlisle said softly, putting his hand on her knee. "It might be best to get you back home and under observation for a few days. I can keep the others out of your room. Give you plenty of time to rest while Emmett is close by, but still far enough to let you rest."

It was tempting. A lot of the things that these vampires came up with were oh so tempting. But Sadie had to be resolute. She had to stay here and she had to….

Sadie…

Amanda, I'm sorry.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Emmett smelled Sadie's scent in the air and got excited. But it was only clinging to Carlisle's clothes and medical bag. Which meant that Carlisle had seen her and that Sadie had needed to be looked at.

"Carlisle, what happened?" Emmett demanded, blocking Carlisle's path. "What happened to Sadie?"

"Sadie's resting, but she is poor shape due to her Imprint on you," Carlisle announced, meeting Emmett's eyes calmly. "Her heart is breaking and destroying itself. Rather like you are destroying yourself by refusing to go anywhere to hunt with us. Really Emmett, you need to go to the mountains and feed instead of lurking on the border and haunting her room. It's not healthy and when the time comes that she chooses to come back, it could prove dangerous for Sadie to have a starving vampire in the house."

Emmett took a step back. "Sadie's not coming back now?! Even though she's suffering?!" He growled. "No! She has to come back! You should have ordered her to come back as a doctor or something!"

"Emmett, I can't order Sadie to do anything."

"She's still a minor!"

"She's almost an adult and she's capable of making her own decisions." Carlisle briefly placed his hand on Emmett's arm. "Listen, Emmett, Sadie can take a day or two to clear her head. She has that time. But you need to focus on yourself. You haven't eaten in days and it's becoming very clear. Go to the mountains. Find yourself something to eat. I will keep an eye on Sadie, but please take care of yourself. I don't want to think about losing you as well as her."

Emmett looked down at his adopted father. He could see his actions were hurting him. It was true. Emmett had not hunted before Sadie left and hadn't hunted since. He was getting hungry, but was ignoring his stomach, his fangs, his bloodlust all because he wanted to be home if Sadie decided to come home at any moment. Alice had been the only one to comment on him needing food before today, but it was clear the whole house was concerned. Possibly even Rosalie, who oddly enough was out on a hunting trip herself that afternoon with Esme.

"I'll think about it," Emmett mumbled, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Please do."

Carlisle left him standing in the main room and Emmett pulled out his cellphone. He scrolled through the pictures on his phone and found one he had snuck of him and Sadie laying next to each other on her bed, her shirt riding up her stomach and her head resting on his chest as she slept off a makeout session. Emmett smiled softly at the picture and forwarded it to her. A second later, she responded.

Delete that.

Nope. I like it.

Delete it.

Come here and make me, Wolf Girl.

You're impossible.

And you're sick.

I'm not that sick. You're not doing that great either from what my dreams are telling me. So shut up.

Just trying to lose a few pounds. Nothing big.

Haha. Eat. Now.

Again, make me.

Emmett, do not play this game with me. You're a fucking vampire. You need blood to survive. Eat.

You're a fucking living creature. You need warmth and a heart to survive. And from what I heard, your heart is dying over there. So don't play games with me, Sadie.

I'm fine.

Bullshit.

You're bullshit.

Sadie, I will drag you across that border kicking and screaming if I have to.

You will not and you know why you won't?

Why?

Because you love me and you love your family. You don't want to break my heart anymore than it already has been broken by starting a war between you, your family and the wolves. And you don't want to hurt your family or risk their lives for me, no matter how much you say you love me. If you love me, you won't come across that border. If you love your family, you'll do the same.

Sadie, you stubborn wolf, I do love you – and them – but you're literally killing yourself by being over there! You need to come home. You need to come home sooner rather than later and I bet Sam and Carlisle told you that too, didn't they?

Sadie offered no response. Emmett was not going to be ignored and continued typing as he circled the main room, eyes glued to the screen. He knew he'd rather call her, but the chances of her picking up were slim. Especially if she wasn't feeling good.

Wolf Girl, please, come home. Tell me you're at the border and I will come pick you up. I'll let you rest and it'll be paws off for a while so you can recuperate and get back to feeling like yourself again. Just please, please come home.

Emmett, I can't.

Sadie…

I need to go to sleep now.

Sadie, wait.

Bye.

Emmett sent a couple more texts at a few minute increments apart, but Sadie didn't respond. He sighed and shoved his phone back into his pocket. His eyes turned to the outside world as gray storm clouds started rolling in from the high grounds.

Just like my mood, he thought, glumly. Sadie, please, just come home…

OOOOOOOOOOOO
