Juan had spent considerable time teaching Catherine what to do when a village got raided. The only correct answer was to duck out as quietly as possible into the jungle and hide under the bushes until they were gone. One person can't fight an army on the army's terms - especially when she is always falling into holes, bushes, and water.
She was out collecting potion ingredients in the forest and heard the shooting. She knew what that meant. It was time for her to hide until it stopped and they all left - so she hid.
She heard her husband yelling and fighting the men. She heard the shooting and commotion going the other way. She knew he was leading them away from her so she could escape. She heard the commotion going farther and farther away until silence. No more yelling. She was worried about him - now she prayed he was still alive.
She waited and waited as long as she could. Every second seemed like an hour. She suddenly had vivid dreams of the man in the mission she had seen many times. Did she trust him? Yes. She would have her husband back.
Finally she went back to the village. She saw the burnt wreckage and the bodies. She looked and looked - but neither her nun friends nor Juan was there. She rummaged around in the wreckage and found an old rusty machete. Suddenly she felt a feeling she had not felt in years. Something long dormant awoke in her. The old blade felt very very good on her hands!
She knew there was no way for her to find Juan now - at least not the regular way. It was black dark in the thick brush. There were thousands of miles of Amazon around her and all she knew is that he had taken them away from her. She knew deep in her soul that he was alive. He would be wounded and hiding in the jungle. It was time for her to use powers she hadn't used since she had left her parents home years ago. It was time to use Astral Projection to find her husband.
She closed her eyes and focused. She felt herself lift off and zoom away. Now she was covering hundreds of miles in seconds using her senses to guide her. She finally saw his "spirit" through all the brush and vines and came down next to him. He was laying on the ground with his shoulders propped up against a large rubber tree.
She put her glowing hands on his face and startled him out of his stupor. He was in shock from the bullet wounds and blood loss he had received while leading them away from her while racing through the jungle. At first, he thought he was dead and was seeing The Virgin Mary.
Then his eyes came into focus and he saw the ghost of his wife kneeling over him. He started crying and begging for her forgiveness. He had tried to lead them away but he must have failed and she had been killed! He was dying, at least he would be with her soon!
She finally calmed him down and pushed the will to live into him as well as she could. She would be there soon to heal him - could he make himself live until she arrived?
If there was even the slightest chance that his beloved was alive and would find him - he would force himself to live! The apparition had assured him that his wife was on the way and that she would heal him. He steeled himself. The jungle hadn't killed him so far, and today was not going to be the day either! She told him to pull up some of the plants around him and use the roots - some would be chewed to help dull the pain and he would stuff others into the holes to clot his blood to stop the bleeding.
What had taken Juan a bit over one hour took her over four hours to finally find him. He had pushed himself as hard as he could lead them away from her. She didn't move through the jungle like he did - he would zoom around and laugh at her while she was slowly getting stuck in the brush and falling into holes. Trekking through the jungle at night in real life isn't nearly as easy as projecting through it, and she had to stop and make several teleport runs to figure it out but she finally located him. He had dragged himself out of the under brush into a clearing so she could find him.
She finally arrived and he was in bad shape. He had been shot several times, bitten and clawed by Wesen several more. He was too weak for her to sedate him for the work. He needed immediate attention and the only way to do it was in "Full Witch mode." She wasn't really sure how he would react.
She kissed him and soothed him. She asked him "You are badly injured and I need to operate on you now. I have to do this the ancient way. Do you know what I am?"
He smiled "A witch? Of course." He had known that since the first time he found her tied to the post with the wood piled all around her all those years ago. She had been delirious and was going in and out of witch mode the entire way to the mission. She had been crying out begging to die and kept calling out to her dead husband the entire way there.
That didn't bother him? No, why should it? She had proven herself in the mission and they had been married for several years now. He smiled at her and she felt his love flooding her senses.
She smiled at him "So you were the one who found me?" "Yes." "Well, I am thankful you did! Are you ready?" He smiled back "Yes, my sweet!" And she transformed herself into the ancient witch corpse to power up and complete the surgical work on him faster.
She saw him wincing and biting down on a stick as she worked - he said it felt like his bones were on fire as she worked her hands deep inside his wounds first cutting out damaged flesh and then growing new tissue. She told him that meant it was working. She normally had to put people out to do this. Would he be OK? He bit down harder and declared he was fine.
Finally she was done. How did he feel? He gave her a big kiss "Great! You made me a new man!"
Now they had to find the nuns. He was the one who knew the jungle. Was he ready to go on a journey with her? They would project to the women to find them. He smiled at her "So that was really you? I was afraid you were dead!" She got him ready, took his hand, closed their eyes, and Zoom they were off.
