HANNAH POV
I let out a relieved breath upon exiting my room at the Cross Road Motel. I watched the rain as it continued to fall, glad that I'd finally gotten some sleep. It was then that I noticed that the door to Mike's room was ajar. Peering inside, I spotted him, unconscious, on the floor.
"Oh my god..." I gasped. 'What...what happened to him? He's unconscious, he's bleeding... Shit, what could have happened to him?'
I darted forwards and quickly tried to get him up, managing to get him onto the bed.
"Mike? Mike, can you hear me?" I called out to him.
'His arms are completely torn up. What was he doing? Gonna have to undress him if I want to disinfect his wounds.'
I also checked and noted that he had a high fever, too. I acted quickly, managing to remove his shirt as he came around.
"It's alright, Mike. It's Hannah." I told him in a comforting tone of voice. "I'm gonna disinfect and treat your wounds, okay?"
He didn't seem entire lucid, but enough to nod in acceptance.
With that, I hurried to the medicine cabinet and grabbed everything I was sure I'd need. I then hurried back to Mike and set it down on the bedside cabinet, turning to face Mike worriedly as I sat on the edge of the bed.
"I'm no doctor." I admitted. "But I'll do what I can."
Mike groaned, but nodded.
I got to work, starting with disinfecting Mike's cuts on his arms and then bandaging them, making sure everything was clean and safe, and then gave him medicine for his fever. I continued to check and treat any wounds as best as I could until finally, I stood up, having done all that I could.
'He's unconscious. Now I'll just have to wait and hope he wakes up.' I noted worriedly.
I moved to sit over in the same chair I'd sat on the last time I was in this room and watched over him as time passed, growing more and more anxious throughout, trying hard to suppress the strange emotions within me, no doubt caused by the memories swirling in my mind.
Ever since he mentioned those broken ribs, my imagination had gone into overdrive. They matched my own wounds from the car crash which killed Beth. So I was sure that Mike had been in a car crash of his own. But now this? This, I wasn't so sure about.
As I stared at him, I finally got to take in his features for the first time. I had to admit that he was very handsome.
Eventually, I was jolted from my thoughts as Mike began to wake up, seeing me sitting in the chair nearby.
"How do you feel?" I asked.
He shook his head. "I've been better. Was I out for long?"
"About three hours." I told him, startled by the look of panic which flitted across his face.
He sat up and seemed to ponder for a moment. "Why the guardian angel act? You don't even know me."
"I just..." I hesitated. "Sorry, it's, kinda painful to explain..."
Mike bit his lip and changed the subject. "You said you were here because you were an insomniac?"
Unfortunately, that was connected to the pain I had just mentioned. Yet, for some reason, I didn't know why exactly, but maybe subconsciously, I was hoping that there was some sort of connection between us. But I told him the truth.
"The insomnia, the reason I want to help you...they're all connected. My twin sister, Beth...she was more adventurous than I was, always off climbing trees and such. I was always the one tending to her scraped knees and cuts and that...several years ago...she died...in a car accident and I was there. I survived, but I saw her...dead. Ever since then, I've had nightmares about death, dying, people trying to kill me, and...and it gets to the point where I just can't sleep. It's terrible, living like this, but I can't ever seem to escape it."
I honestly didn't know what made me tell him so much. I had always kept my pain and my past to myself and it had always hurt me too much to think about bringing up and sharing those memories. Yet...something inside had told me to explain everything, so I had.
But he just looked at me in amazement and I grimaced.
Trying to change the subject, I considered for a moment, before remarking, "You seem to lead a dangerous life."
"It's not the one that I chose." he replied.
I shifted a little at that. "You've got some kind of a problem?"
He nodded. "Bigger than you can possibly imagine."
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't be asking you questions. I mean, after all, we hardly know each other. You have no reason to trust me." I replied.
"Well, I can see from your expression that opening up to me about your sister was hard to do, yet you did. That has to count for something resembling trust, right?" he explained.
He then sighed and shook his head. "Listen, I'm truly grateful for your help. But for your own sake, I think it's better if you don't ask any questions about me."
"Maybe I could help you, I-"
"No one can help me." he burst out, then added softly, "You've already done a lot for me, Hannah. Thank you."
"Right...I'm gonna go. Take care." I said softly.
Standing awkwardly, I got up and left. He was a real mystery, and I wished that I could know more.
MIKE POV
I groaned as I stood up and quickly dressed, making my way back over to the table.
'I'm coming, Shaun. I'll find you, wherever you are.' I thought desperately as I sat down. 'I need to get going, I've already lost too much time. Hannah... I don't want to get her involved, for her own sake. No one must know until I find my son.'
Still, I felt that we had connected somehow, hearing the story of how she'd lost her sister. Like me, she had lost someone that she'd loved and had been involved in the accident that claimed their life. I had lost Jason and she had lost her sister and she had been living with that guilt and grief for many years.
But she had lived almost half of her life without her sister, while I had only lost Jason a few years ago. The pain that she was feeling, compared to mine, must've been even worse and I didn't wish that on anyone. So in a way, I could sympathize with her, and we could understand each others' feelings, even though I hadn't mentioned Jason to her.
Inhaling sharply, I opened the box and pulled out the lizard figure, opening it up and reading, 'Are you prepared to make a sacrifice to save your son?' Another address.
With a heavy sigh, I stood up and left.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
