The movie night was just drawing to a close when there was a knock at the door. After a brief moment of confusion, and once his tails were wrapped together, 'Taylor' went to answer it. He had no idea who would be coming round this late, and he knew nobody had invited anyone else to join them. But, as he reached the door, he could make out the unmistakable outline of bat wings through the window. He opened the door.
"Good evening, Rouge."
"So, it is true."
"What's that?"
"You're Tails, right?"
Instantly, Tails knew that there was no point in keeping his tails together, so he unfurled them as his answer.
"Let me guess. Shadow told you."
"Indeed he did. It's nice to see you, foxy."
"Would you like to come in?"
"If it's alright with Amy."
Tails didn't have any time to answer before Amy's voice was heard echoing from the living room.
"Of course it's ok, Rouge! Come on in!"
Tails smirked.
"Well, there's your answer."
With that, she walked through the door as Tails closed it behind her, before joining everyone in the living room again.
GUN headquarters had definitely quietened down by this time of night. Most of the agents had gone home, and now there were only ten or so people left in the building. Of course, one of them wasn't able to leave. Sonic was still keeping himself secluded in the corner of his cell. His current guard, a female eagle, was keeping her distance, just close enough to keep an eye on him. This was Sonic's favourite thing about his current situation. He loved watching the guards squirm. He didn't even have to do anything to freak them out most of the time. Of course, even he needed to sleep, so I finally moved from the shadows to the bed at the other side of the cell. And so, he went from one of his favourite pastimes, to his least favourite. While he loved watching the variety of scared guards come and go, he loathed sleeping. He only did it because it was a necessity. And why was he so against it? Simple: he couldn't control his dreams. He couldn't decide what he dreamt about, and ever since the fateful plane crash over a decade ago, at least ninety percent of those dreams were about Tails. Mostly, they involved the young fox dying in a variety of different ways as Sonic watched helplessly from the sidelines. However, that had changed since Tails had revealed himself in their battle. Now, his dreams didn't involve Tails dying while he was unable to help. Instead, it was Sonic doing the killing, and he was unable to stop himself. The moment his eyes closed, it seemed tonight would be no different. And, it seemed that the world of his nightmares really wanted to torture him this time, because he was suddenly back on Angel Island, ten years ago. But, instead of Eggman, he saw himself, in his full dark form, taking the place of the mad scientist. Having never seen this form from the outside, he couldn't help but feel intimidated. For a moment, the two Sonics just stood and stared at each other, but that changed as soon as Tails flew past in the Tornado. The Dark Sonic turned to face the plane, raised an arm and fired a Chaos Spear at the plane.
The world slowed to a crawl, forcing Sonic to watch the inevitable impact in slow motion. As it approached the plane, he could see Tails' face, streaked with tears as he screamed. Instinctually, he tried to move, to at least attempt to save him, but his body wouldn't listen. He saw the Chaos Spear pierce the fuel tank of the plane.
It exploded on impact.
Instantly, the same pain from ten years ago filled Sonic's heart as he collapsed to his knees and yelled.
"What are you crying about? You caused this, didn't you?" Sonic knew that demonic voice anywhere. It was his dark doppelganger. He hadn't even noticed him approaching, and now he was right in front of him.
"No, you're wrong! Eggman killed him."
"Because Tails asked him to. Don't you remember what Tails told you?"
"It wasn't my fault!"
"Yes, Sonic. It was." Another voice. He turned around, and there was Tails. The same Tails he had battled in the cemetery. "It was your fault."
"No. It was Eggman."
"Come on, Sonic. You've already said that. I already told you why it all happened. You took all the glory for yourself. I was always just your sidekick. 'Tails' needed to die so that I had the chance to start again. I wouldn't have needed to start again if it wasn't for you." It was at this moment that Sonic noticed how close Tails had suddenly become.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm returning the favour. I had to die so I could start again. I had to die because of you. So now, you have to die because of me." Tails unsheathed his sword, raising it high above his head.
"Sayonara, Sonic the Hedgehog." And then he swung the sword down towards the helpless hedgehog.
Sonic woke up.
And, just for a moment, he powered up. Just enough to Chaos Blast his bed to the other side of the cell, startling the guard, before crumpling to a panting, sweaty heap on the cold, metallic floor. The guard panicked, and hurriedly grabbed her communicator.
"Ms Rabbot, ma'am. We have a bit of a situation down at the cell."
That was all Bunnie needed to hear before she broke into a run.
The movie night had certainly outlived the movie. The credits had rolled a good thirty minutes ago, but the five friends were still chatting away. The conversation had mostly been pretty amicable, except for when Knuckles became the topic of the choice. Tails, of course, knew that the Guardian was dead, and he knew that three out of the four girls with him right now were unwilling witnesses to his demise, but he didn't know all the details. And he certainly didn't know about the proposal. He almost didn't believe it until he saw Rouge's ring. Immediately, he apologised profusely for bringing it up and gave the bat his deepest condolences, before Amy quickly changed the subject back to something a bit more cheerful. The one topic that didn't come up was Amy's pregnancy. Rouge already knew that Tails and Amy were an item, thanks again to Shadow, but she knew nothing beyond that, and the others honoured Amy's wishes, and kept it that way. The conversation continued for a couple more hours, before everyone collectively decided it was time to call it a night. Hugs were exchanged as Sally, Cream and Rouge prepared to leave, and they all promised to arrange something again soon. Once they had gone, Amy and Tails gathered the empty mugs, before heading to bed. Somewhere in the back of their minds, they both recalled the fight they had just after Taylor became Tails, but that was ancient history to them right now. Amy didn't care if he was Taylor or Tails, he was soon to be the father of their child, and she loved him either way.
