The sea licks at the bottom of the ship. Draco feels sick as he rocks in time with the boat. He's not sure why he agreed to be a pirate, not when he gets so seasick. It's been six months since he's been part of the Death Eater crew, and he hates it. It's his legacy, he supposes, because his father was a pirate before he was captured, under the same captain as well.
Now it's up to Draco to live up to the Malfoy pirate name.
He's not sure he wants to.
He's not able to swell on if he wants to or not, because one of his fellow cabin boys, Nott, pulls him out of his thoughts.
"Malfoy, Captain wants to speak to you," he says. Draco looks up ruefully into Nott's green eyes, and Nott just shrugs. Draco thinks that they could've been friends in a different life, but on the seas, there are no friends. The most loyalty someone has is to their captain.
That, though, doesn't work great when you don't like your captain. Draco's thinking about that now, as he walks to the Captain's Quarters, as slow as possible. It's bad enough that Draco has to be on the sea, but Captain Voldemort makes it so much worse.
Draco would never voice his doubts about their captain outloud — news will get back to Voldemort, and then Draco will be tossed overboard, quite literally, and left to drown in the sea — but Draco's never met anyone fowler. And he has to fight against brigands. They're supposedly supposed to be terrible.
Sometimes, Draco thinks maybe the Death Eater crew are the real brigands.
"Ah, Draco," Captain Voldemort says as Draco knocks and enters. That's another thing about Voldemort — he calls everyone by their first name. Everyone else in the crew refers to everyone else by last name only, but not Voldemort. It makes him seem even more dangerous. "There's a certain group of brigands that we have to fight soon," Voldemort continues, and Draco nods. He tries not to look over at all of the artifacts in the Captain's Quarters — spoils from past fights — but it's hard to make himself look at Voldemort.
"Who, Captain?" Draco asks, hoping he's not over stepping.
"The Crew of the Phoenix," Voldemort answers, looking intrigued at Draco daring to ask a question. "And you, Draco, have a very special job for this fight. You need to kill their captain. You, directly."
Draco gulps. He's never killed anyone, much less a captain.
Draco hates being a pirate.
