It was an early Friday evening and Ethan was busy writing up his essay for his Paediatrics lecture. He was just typing up his final paragraph when he heard his doorbell ring. He'd ignored it, hoping whoever it was would go away. He carried on with his essay but the doorbell wouldn't stop. It kept ringing like as if someone had kept their finger on the button. Saving his essay, rose up from the chair and walked over to the door. He wasn't surprised to see who it was.

"Finally!" Cal said, pushing past him. "Took you long enough."

"Well, unlike some, some of us want to meet our deadlines." Ethan said.

"Come on, Nibbles. It's a Friday. There's plenty of time for you to finish your essay." Cal said. "Anyway, don't you want to know what I've, well I mean we've been up to?"

Ethan shook his head. "Not really."

"You're no fun, Eth." Cal whined, sitting down on the couch.

"Leave him, Cal." Will told him. "He doesn't need to know. And he's right about deadlines. Don't you have one by tomorrow?"

Ethan smiled at his friend, then turned back to his brother. "Yes, Cal. What about your essay that's due tomorrow?"

"No big deal. I'll get it done. I always do. Plus the deadline is not due until 7pm so it gives me plenty of time to finish the essay."

"Yeah, but don't you have to start it first?" Will nudged him as Ethan handed them both a beer.

"What?" Ethan said, sitting down opposite them. "Don't tell me you haven't even started it yet?"

"Relax, Ethan. I'll get up early to do it. You know I rarely sleep." Cal told him.

"Yes, only when you're not too hungover. " Ethan said. "Which by the looks of it won't be too long."

Will laughed. "Your brother's right, Cal. I don't think you'll be up at all at this rate."

"Since when did you take his side?" Cal teased Will. "Plus I've only had like one beer."

"Yeah, plus the other two you just had when we were at the pub. Oh, and the glass of whiskey plus the round of vodka shots you ordered." Will counted on his fingers.

"So that's what you've been up to?" Ethan asked. "How many pubs did you actually go to?"

"Well, just the one pub. But, then we went to a couple of clubs afterwards." Cal told him. "Shall I get us some more beers?"

Will politely declined the offer as did Ethan.

"Suit yourselves." Cal said as he got up off the sofa and headed towards the kitchen.

"Just exactly how many clubs did you go to?" Ethan inquired when it was just him and Will.

"Do you really want to know?" Will warned him.

"Not really."

"Good because you don't want to know. I'm surprised how sober he is still."

"You two together is such a bad idea." Ethan told his friend.

"You're the one who introduced us." Will reminded him.

"Only because Cal kept going on about me not having any friends at uni."

"So you thought I was the friend who needed to be introduced to him?"

"Well, yes and that's because I knew he would like you. You were the only one he's liked since I've been here."

"And I wonder why that is?" Will said sarcastically.

"I guess it's because you guys are so similar."

"Who's similar?" Cal asked, coming back.

This time Cal had not only brought himself another beer but, he had managed to steal some of Ethan's snacks too. He threw them on the coffee table.

"Here we go. I thought we could have a little party since it is a Friday night." Cal suggested.

"So what's this about someone being similar?" He said, sitting back down next to Will.

"You and me." Will answered him.

"Us? Similar?" Cal said.

"Mhmmm. Ethan was just telling me I was the friend who got introduced to you because I was the only you'd liked since Ethan's been at medical school." Will explained.

"Yep, that would be true. But, that's only because you're the only friend he has."

"Hey, that's not true!" Ethan called out.

"I'm only joking, Nibbles." Cal joked. "All your other friends are, well, just like you."

"And?" Ethan asked. "What's wrong with that?"

"Nothing really. It's just that I've already got one nerd for a brother. I don't need any more." Cal replied. "One's good enough of me."

"I don't know whether to take that as a compliment or not." Ethan said suspiciously.

"Oh, I'd take it as a compliment, if I were you." Will answered.

"So are we going to have this party or not?" Cal asked.

"Well, I'm not." Ethan declined. "I really do have to finish this essay."

"Fine, whatever." Cal said. "What about you, Will? Do you have to finish the same essay?"

"I do, but good for you, I actually know when it's time to stop and have a break every once in a while." Will said, smiling at him.

"You see, Eth. Even Will knows how to have fun!" Cal shouted at his brother's back.

"Yes, but at least he's started his essay. You haven't!" Ethan shouted back from his desk. "Plus this is what he wants to specialise in."

"Specialise in what?" Cal said. "Having fun?"

"No, Cal. Will wants to specialise in Paediatrics. Which is saying something."

"Which is what exactly? That I don't know what I want?" Cal retorted.

"Not at the moment, no." Ethan replied back.

"Technically that's not true." Cal mumbled.

"What?" Ethan shouted back.

"I said that's true!"

"Are you two done?" Will said. "I thought we were going have this party."

"That we are." Cal said. "Except, we're going to take this party out to a club."

"I heard that." Ethan's voice called out.

"You were supposed to." Cal teased back. "And anyway, we can't have fun here while you're busy working. So me and Will are going to head out."

"Okay."

"Don't worry, Ethan. I'll keep an eye on him for you." Will called out as he and Cal headed out of the door.

"Thanks!" Ethan's voice shouted.

Strobe lights were flashing like crazy while the loud music was beating out. They had barely stepped foot inside when Cal had managed to get grabbed by two girls. While Cal was busy showing off his moves on the dance floor, Will had found himself stood alone at the bar.

"Is this fun or what?" Cal yelled over the music when he returned.

"Yeah, it's good." Will shouted back. "You certainly know how to get the girls."

"I guess it's just my charm. But, you're not too bad yourself."

"What?"

"I said you're not too bad yourself. Looks like you've got an admirer." Cal replied nudging Will to look over his shoulder.

Will looked at where Cal indicated. A young red haired girl raised her glass to him and gave him a smile. With a nod of his head, Cal persuaded Will to go over and get to know her. Taking the hint, Will left Cal to go back to his two girls, while he went over to the red haired girl at the end of the bar.

"I'm Will." Will introduced himself as he sat down on a barstool.

"Sadie." replied the young girl.

"Nice to meet you, Sadie." Will said. "Can I buy you a drink?"

"No, I'm good thank you." Sadie declined politely. "I've already got one."

"Yeah, sure, but you could do with another one. My treat." Will flashed his charming grin.

"Okay why not, I'll have another one of these," She indicated to the drink in her hand.

"So do you come here often?" Will asked her after ordering the drinks.

"Yes, quite often. I'm usually here on Fridays."

"Oh, really? How's that?"

"Well, I'm a student at the moment so I like to unwind when I don't have any coursework to do."

"So you go to university?"

Sadie nodded while taking a sip from her drink. "Yeah. What about you?"

"Same here. So what are you studying?"

"Law."

"Oh, wow that's tough. No wonder you need to unwind during the week." Will smiled.

"I know, tell me about it. What about you?"

"Medicine."

"Wow, that's another tough one. How are you enjoying it so far?"

"Well, you know. Lots of information to learn. But, it's going good."

Over the course of the rest of the night, Will carried on his conversation with Sadie. He was about to offer to buy her another drink when she looked at her watch.

"I'd better be heading off. Got an early start tomorrow morning." Sadie explained. "But, it was nice meeting you, Will. Maybe I'll see you around sometime."

"Yeah, maybe." Will said. He shook her hand before watching her leave.

Will turned his head to see where Cal was. Surprisingly, Cal still seemed sober and he was dancing with another group of girls. Cal noticed WIll watching him so he signalled for him to join them. Will however, declined the offer. Cal only shrugged in response and went back to what he was doing. Will took out his phone and checked a couple of his uni emails when the caller ID popped up.

"Ethan?" Will raised his voice. "I can't hear you, you're gonna have to speak up a bit, mate. What's that?"

"Will, I…" Ethan breathed out. "I think…"

The line was cut off abruptly. Will tried to call Ethan back, but it kept going to voice message. Worried about Ethan, Will walked over to where Cal was still dancing.

"I'm sorry but, I'm going to remove this guy from you, girls." Will apologised to the group.

Cal let Will lead him away by his elbow. Cal knew he should have been annoyed that Will had ruined his game, but by the expression on his friend's face, Cal knew something was amiss.

"Will? What is it?" Cal asked once they'd reach the exit.

"I'm sure it's nothing to be worried about, but I just received a call from Ethan." Will explained.

"Ethan? What did he want? Was he checking up on me?"

"I don't know."

"What do you mean you don't know?"

"It was difficult to hear over the music, but it sounded like he was having difficulty breathing. Like he was having a panic attack or something. I don't know. Anyway, the call ended rather quickly."

"Well, we better head over to Ethan's place. Call an ambulance while we're on our way too." Cal said as he rushed out of the club.

By the time Will and Cal got to Ethan's flat, the ambulance was already outside. Cal unlocked the front door and led the paramedics to Ethan's flat while Will followed behind. Cal unlocked the door to an eerie silence.

"Ethan?" Cal called out. "Eth, it's me. Where are you?"

Cal received no answer.

"Cal! Over here." Will's voice rang out. "We're in the bedroom."

Cal along with the paramedics rushed over to where Will knelt. Ethan's head was rested on his knees. The paramedics quickly got to work. Cal could only watch helplessly from the doorway.

"How is he?" Cal asked one of the paramedics.

"He's stable. Do you have any idea what might have caused him to collapse?"

Cal shook his head. Then looked over at Will.

"Er, he called me about 30 minutes ago. It sounded like he was having a panic attack." Will informed the paramedics.

The paramedics nodded as they rolled Ethan out to the ambulance. Cal jumped into the back with one of the paramedics.

"Call me when there's an update." Will said as the doors shut.

Will stood in the street watching the sirens blare and lights flash as the ambulance drove away.
