I was up, showered, dressed, brushed my teeth, ready for our first group session with Dudly, and Chance was still fast asleep.
"Chance up!" I said nudging him.
He didn't stir.
"You can't break a pact on the first day!" I said. "Chance up! Group's in ten minutes."
He just laid there snoring. Finally, I got an idea. "Jasmine, why are you taking off your shirt?"
"Huh?" said Chance getting up, "I'm up. Where's Jas?"
I smirked at him.
"That was cold, man," he said.
"Pay back for the water yesterday. Come on, group starts in ten minutes, and I am going to make you do push ups if you're late."
Grumbling, Chance got up. "I am coming in my pajamas!"
"I don't care, just get your ass out here!"
We walked to the group room where everyone already was there because we were almost late. Mishi was sitting by Verdo and she had two seats saved by her for me and Chance. I went and grabbed a cup of ardes, which was disgusting, but it woke me up, and sat down with Mishi.
"Morning, Padawan," I said.
"Morning Master," she said. "Oh I meditated last night."
"Really?"
"Not like Jedi mediated but did that imagery on the data with the application we have. I picked the one with Shili. It was so pretty. I hadn't done it yet cause I thought it would make me cry, but it didn't. It made me happy."
"Good," I said. "I meditated too yesterday, earlier in the day."
"Did it make you happy?"
"Not happy, but calm."
"Yeah, I am going to do it again tonight."
"I think I might need to do it too," I said, almost to myself.
"Alright," said Dudly coming in. "Good morning everyone. It is such a beautiful Coruscant morning. Shall we get started. Who wants to check in first?"
"I'll go," said a voice by the door. We all turned to see Chance standing there, who looked like he would rather face an army of droids then do this, but he was making himself do this.
"Good morning Chance," said Dudly, keeping a straight face. "We saved you a seat. Come get us started."
Chance came in and sat down by Vardo who was eyeing him like he had grown two heads. In fact most of us were wondering what he was doing here, only Mishi and I knew about the pact.
"I don't know where to start," Chance said.
"Why did you come to group today?"
"Basically I realized that other people were fighting for their… health and I needed to fight too, even if I never get out of here."
"Well that is a dreadful way to start the morning," said Dudly. "But I like the fighting for your health. What are you fighting for Chance?"
"I made a promise to someone, that I now regret, that I would try."
"Alright, do you have a goal for the day?"
"I got out bed before noon!"
"Yes but you have already done that. Can anyone think of a goal someone can have for Chance?"
"Go to group?" said Mishi.
"Talk to the doctor," said Vardo.
"Take meds," said Peermans.
"How about half ass participate," I said. "Come to all groups, say something intelligent in each one, talk to the psychiatrist and the minder, and take some of your meds that you feel comfortable with."
Chance shot daggers into me. "That's a little more than half-assing it."
"I think that is a lovely idea, Chance," said Dudly. "We can help you do that."
"I'm sure you will," he gritted through his teeth. "What is your goal, Skywalker?"
"Meditate, tends to relax me."
"You're a Jedi," said Chance. "All Jedi meditate, so that is not a real goal."
"Yeah," said Mishi, "Didn't you say last night your goal was going to be to start eating more?"
"You didn't eat much at breakfast," said Chance. "You let Mishi finish your eggs again."
"I think a good goal would be eat everything at lunch and dinner," said Mishi, "and we aren't gonna help you. That's a good goal."
"That is a good goal," said Dudley.
"Aren't we supposed to be making these up for ourselves?" I asked.
"You are. But I like the whole making them up for each other. It gives it a camaraderie spirit," said Dudly.
"I can't eat everything on my plate, I will throw up!" I explained.
"Well, try," said Mishi.
"I hope you do throw up," said Chance. "I have to go to five therapys sessions and a psychiatrist, you jackass."
"Chance we all do that," said Mishi.
"Yes, but now I have to do it!"
Dudley laughed. "This is quite effective. Peermans, what is Flee's daily goal?"
"Whatsa?" asked Flee.
"Flee has to take a damn nerve pill," said Peermans.
"Nooo!" said Flee, and she started to cry.
"Flee, can you think of a good goal for Vednis?" asked Dudley
"Meesa don't know!"
"Okay," said Dudly, "Flee doesn't want to play. Vednis how about your goal is call your sponsor during the day and just talk. Tell him how you are doing, what you need, things like that."
"Call my sponsor? Hadn't done that in a while," said Vednis. "Okay doc."
"Vednis, what do you think Verdo's goal should be?"
"Pick from two, call your kid during lunch, have an hour conversation with her school be damned, or when they come in for visitation have your husband bring in some food and share some chocolate."
Verdo smiled. "I might do both."
"Verdo," said Dudley, "What is Mishi's goal?"
Verdo sized Mishi up, and Mishi looked down and just shuffled her feet. "She needs to say that she is angry at something other than herself," said Verdo. "Even if she just scream life sucks and starts cutting the heads off of ewok teddy bears. She is angry at what happened to her people but she is taking it out herself. She needs to get angry at her attackers."
"I...I cant do that," whispered Mishi.
"Yeah you can," I said. "I'll help you."
"As long as she releases this anger in a healthy way, this shouldn't be a problem," said Dudly.
"What do you mean healthy?" asked Verdo.
"I don't want either of you teaching her to kill anyone."
"Okay."
"Chance, What is Peermens daily goal?"
"Talk to Duya about seeing his parents killed."
"Fuck you Chance!" screamed Peermens.
"Hey if I am going down I am taking everybody with me!"
"Okay," said Dudly. "Everybody relax. We are challenging each other but we are not going to hurt each other. Chance you are disqualified, Peermens make up your own goal."
Peermens sighed. "Do some relaxation techniques before bed, and try to get some sleep."
"Okay, great you all have your goals," said Dudly. "Go to Yoga Jasmine is going to take you. Chance come here."
We all got up ready for yoga and Chance groaned, but obeyed.
"You did it to yourself man," I said to him, as I left the room with Mishi in tow.
