Chapter-21: Doubtful

A/N: Just a reminder, this plot, although triggered by our current situation, is NOT a conspiracy theory. It's just what my overactive imagination conjured up. The disease here is NOT same as the one we're dealing with in RL.

This wouldn't have been possible without my friends, Banshee69 and IpsitaC77 apu. I love you guys.

It takes Edward and Bella an hour before the Assistant Director caves and agrees to contact the CDC.

Edward sighs once they're alone. "He disagrees," he grumbles. "He just acquiesced to shut us up."

"He didn't say that," Bella counters.

"You saw him roll his eyes when I broached the subject, didn't you? He thinks I got this job through nepotism so he doesn't trust me."

Her face softens. Placing a hand on his arm, she asks, "Edward, we were in the academy together, do you remember?"

He nods. You were the popular girl and I was the nerd, he wants to say, but holds his tongue.

"You were very hardworking. I'm sure your performance got you here, not who your dad is." She smiles. "If the AD undermines you because of your connections, then you just have to prove him wrong."

Inspired by her words, Edward decides to do everything to solve this case … even if it meant biting the bullet and making the call he's been dreading.

Across the city, James Bright feels his confidence diminish with each passing moment. Leafing through his notes, he comes to the same conclusion: in the time between Aro was exposed and now, the virus has undergone substantial mutation.

"I told that bastard it wasn't ready," he mutters. "He just wouldn't listen! How will I control this?"

"Control what?" an eerily calm voice asks from behind him.

Turning around, he wishes the ground would open up and swallow him whole. "Jane."
