Chapter 32: Yuri Amane
A heavy silence filled the room, and the air grew tense. After several moments of silence, Amane shrugged her shoulders. "Saiyans? Is that some kind of hip new band that you kids listen to?" She asked.
"It's… Nevermind, please forget I said anything." Gohan disregarded as he put his backpack down and took a fighting stance.
"Hey, aren't you going to change into some actual fighting clothes? It'll suck if your uniform gets messed up." Amane told him as she crossed her arms.
"It's fine, you don't have to worry about it." Gohan's eyes narrowed. "Please take the first move." Maybe she's not a Saiyan, but does that mean I should gauge her abilities to make sure? There's no way… I guess it really is just a Quirk.
"You sound confident. How do you know I won't ruin that uniform of yours?" She asked.
"I would like to begin, Ms. Amane." Gohan told her, refining his stance to match his fathers.
"Alright, then in that case…" Suddenly, she dashed and threw a right jab. As Gohan raised his arms in defense, Amane's jaw dropped slightly. "I've never met anybody who could withstand a hit like that!" She smiled slightly, and looking down, he could see that her arm was encased in metal. She suddenly pulled away and threw a heavy kick from her left leg to Gohan's temple, but to no avail. Despite the additional metal layer, her attacks didn't phase Gohan. "You're pretty good, after all, kid!"
"Have you ever looked at the full moon before?" Gohan asked her as he blocked an incoming wave of attacks.
"I've never been fond of the moon!" She yelled as she spun around and slammed a roundhouse kick into Gohan's arm. "I've seen pictures of it, and let me tell you, I don't get it. It's a white ball in the sky, so what!"
"What about when you were a child?" Gohan continued as he grabbed her wrists, stopping her assault.
"My mother always told me that the moon oozes negativity and those who look at it absorb that negativity. In her name, I refuse to look at the moon out of respect!" She said as she pulled away, separating her left arm at the biceps. Startled, Gohan released his grip, and Amane backed away as the severed arm began to glow. "Trojan Horse!" She yelled as the arm began to glow. With a loud boom, the arm exploded in Gohan's face, and Amane stood back and smiled. "Plus, I always had a curfew growing up, so I didn't get many opportunities to look at it. Now come on out, kid. If my earlier attacks didn't scratch you, then that one would have left you with some bruises at the most."
"That was dirty…" Gohan told her as the smoke cleared, revealing an unscathed, but tattered-clad warrior, his jacket torn and singed, revealing the top upper-right half of her chest, and his pants ripped on both legs, up to his thigh on his right leg and up to his knee on his left.
"I told you that you should have changed. It'll be alright, I'll make sure Mr. Powers replaces it." As she spoke, she raised her stub, and the metal on her back crawled down her arm and onto her stub, forming an arm out of metal. "Don't worry kid, that first arm was made special. No more bombs from here on out." The fingers at the end of her new arm sharpened into spikes, and she dashed at her opponent. However, as she threw her claws forward, Gohan threw his hand forward and grabbed the metal arm, gripping it until it shattered into pieces. "What the hell?!" As she threw her knee upward, Gohan vanished, reappearing behind her as he yanked on her tail. "H-HEY!"
"What's your mother's name?" Gohan asked as he put a hand on her shoulder and pushed her to the ground, leaving her tail in his hand and his foot on her arm.
"W-What's it to- Let go of that!" For whatever reason, Amane suddenly found it harder to speak, and buried her face in the carpet. "It's Ticho! Her name's Ticho now let go!" With her declaration of defeat, Gohan released her, and she pulled herself off the ground and sat on her knees. "Freaking pervert…!" Amane cursed under her breath as Gohan put a finger to his chin.
Ticho… What could that name relate to…?
"Alrighty, if you are finished, then I'd like your verdict, Amane." Powers told her as he looked over the form for Gohan's Work Study. "Holy crap, you are a muscular child. You look like you eat horses for lunch and absorb the leg muscles directly to your own." He expressed as he looked up from his desk.
"He took my Trojan Horse with nothing more than a ripped uniform and a pissed-off attitude." She explained, tracing her finger along the tear-line. "Well, that's a bit of an exaggeration. The second part, not the first one."
"Trojan Horse? And you just batted it off? I designed that bomb specifically to take down those massive, muscled creatures that've been giving the top heroes a lot of trouble lately. And yet you just shrugged it off like it was nothing…" Powers refused to break his gaze, and after a moment of silence, he slammed a stamp onto the form beneath his nose. "I'll take him." He said.
"Really? Thank you, Sir!" Gohan said with a bow as Powers stood up.
"In costume, refer to me as Ajax. Out of costume, I'll accept boss, big man, Mr. Powers, or our world's greatest mind." He informed him as he walked out from his desk. "I want you here tomorrow at the same time. You came at the right time, tomorrow we'll be having a meeting before we form the Joint Hero Interception Force, or J.H.I.F, for an upcoming mission. We'll be able to use your durability to our advantage."
"I won't let you down, Mr. Powers!" Gohan said excitedly.
Powers handed him a platinum business card and walked him to the elevator. "Bring this downstairs to Ms. Ari, she's the receptionist farthest from the door, and let her know that you need a new uniform, courtesy of the company, of course, and where they can send it to."
"Right! I'll see you tomorrow, Mr. Powers. Same to you, Ms. Amane!" Gohan told them before leaving them be, heading downstairs.
"So what do you think?" Amane asked her employer.
"He's like a monster. To be able to withstand that level of concentrated destructive force without so much as a scratch?" Powers rested his head on his hands.
"So why accept him?"
"Are you crazy? Monsters like him are exactly what the world needs. Cultivate his heroic nature and he'll have an undying loyalty with unbeatable strength. Turn him away because of fear, and he'll be bound to head in the direction everyone turns him to. Besides, if the Atarashi Mirai plan to intercept the rescue force that Sir Nighteye, Ryukyu, and Fat Gum are forming. I think having him at our side will put us at an advantage." He explained as he got up and made his way to his kitchen.
"If you say so." Amane looked over and saw her boss reaching into a cabinet.
As he pulled out a couple of glasses and a bottle of scotch, he began to pour himself a drink. "Care for a drink?"
"Thanks, but I'm fine. I have to get home soon." She told him as she walked upstairs to change her clothes.
"One of these days, Ms. Amane. One of these days." As he spoke to himself, Powers downed his drink and took off towards the elevator.
Left alone in the office suite, Amane entered the large walk-in closet and searched for the section that carried her gear and outfits. As she changed, she couldn't help but think about the boy. Gohan Son… It's been such a long time since I can remember being overwhelmed so easily… And by a child, no less… "He's right. That boy has to be some kind of monster. There's just no way a regular person at his age is so immovable. According to his document, he was Quirkless, but that couldn't be true, right?" As Amane continued to rack through her brain, she kept thinking about the word that he asked her about. Saiyans… Why does that sound familiar…? She had remembered hearing about that word, a long time ago when an entire city was reduced to a crater. For the life of her, however, she couldn't connect the dots between the word and the event. With a sigh, she changed out of her undersuit and got into some relaxed-fit clothes, getting ready to end the work day.
"Ticho? What kind of name is that?" Bulma asked as Gohan walked home. He had called her to update her on how things went between Class 1-A's trip and his meeting with Richard Powers.
"I was really hoping you would know." Gohan said. "The meeting went well, by the way. I start tomorrow, and I'll be helping out against some villains that are trying to intercept a rescue attempt."
"Well, that shouldn't be too hard for you." She told him. "I'm glad you got the position, but don't forget to keep up with your studies and school work."
"I know. I'll do my best, Bulma, don't worry." Gohan reassured her as he smiled to himself.
"And you said that name was Ticho, right?" Bulma asked him as Vegeta's voice suddenly spoke over the phone.
"Ticho? Where have you heard that name?" The prince asked, shocking both Gohan and Bulma.
"Oh, Vegeta… There was this woman at the agency, and she had a tail and black hair and eyes. I asked her a few questions because I thought she may have possibly been…"
"Ticho was the attendant of my brother, Tarble. Just as Nappa was for me. They're comparable in strength, but Tarble was left on a remote world somewhere far out there before our planet was destroyed." Vegeta explained. "Are you sure that this woman said her name was Ticho?"
"Well, no. Her mother's name was Ticho, she said." Gohan and Bulma both remained silent for several seconds. "Wait, Vegeta, you have a brother?!" Gohan yelled through the phone.
"Why didn't I ever know about this?!" Bulma yelled over the phone as she and Vegeta broke into an argument, soon hanging up the phone. The tone for the call being ended sounded, and Gohan held his phone tightly in his hand, unable to use the pocket of his torn pants.
"Vegeta's brother… Tarble…" Memories of Nappa flashed through his mind, and he reminisced about the Saiyan Invasion that happened roughly a decade ago. The thought of Vegeta then versus Vegeta now made him chuckle quietly. "Could it really be the same person? If that's the case, I wonder if her mother, or Amane, is as violent or dangerous as Nappa. But, that couldn't be, right? Otherwise, she wouldn't be working at a Hero Agency…" Gohan had so many questions, but every one of them was cut short as his stomach began to growl. "Geez, I guess it is pretty late. I should hurry back and get something to eat!" Gohan took off into the sky, his stomach emptied of any food, but his chest full of determination to find out the secrets that Yuri Amane was hiding.
