Evan types away as he finishes up a report. Since he got Mia back, his attitude changed completely. The man's back to his normal self. The rest of the force were told about Mia's visit to the hospital through the grape vines. When Mia came to visit him one time, everyone greeted her and asked how she was doing.
Barry gave her the update that she was sent to the hospital due to a viral infection as a cover-up for her abduction story. She tells them she's feeling better and the doctor had told her to take it easy for a bit. Pat, Evan's partner, keeps an eye on him after Mia begged him. He only did if she brought him her famous flan. Of course, she said yes and a deal had been struck.
Evan stands up to take a small break. He walks into the vending area and gets a drink; Reach. Opening the can, he takes a sip. It tastes strange to him. "What a weird flavor," he thinks to himself. Suddenly, he feels his throat closing. "I can't breathe!"
Evan falls to his knees gasping and clutching his throat. Pat notes Evan taking too long so he goes to find him. When he reaches the vending area, he sees Evan gasping. The man pulls out his radio as he eases Evan in his arms.
"This is Detective Pat Smith. Badge number 34291. I have a 10-24 in the vending area. Send in the damn EMTs to CCPD," Pat shouts into the walkie.
"10-4. Sending EMTs," the dispatcher states.
Pat looks back to Evan. He smiles, "Hey, man. You're going to be fine."
Evan touches his throat. Pat raises a brow in confusion. The man uses Pat's arm to show what's wrong. He touches Pat's forearm then his throat.
"My arm is your throat?"
He nods. Evan then clasps both hands around it tightly. Pat finally gets it.
"Allergic reaction?!" Evan gives him a thumbs up. "Why did you get this drink if you're allergic to the damn thing? Geez man, you're horrible at charades," he tries to lighten the mood.
Evan smirks. The EMTs rush in. They push Pat out of the way. One of them sets Evan down straight on his back.
"He said it's an allergic reaction," he informs.
"Said?"
"More like bad charades."
"Got it." They look to their partner, "Get the EpiPen."
They dig through the bag. With the EpiPen in hand, they inject it into Evan's thigh. A few seconds pass and his throat opens up. Evan breathes in heavily and coughs a few times.
He slowly sits up. The man smiles at Pat. Suddenly, his eyes roll back into his skull and passes out. It's so sudden it stuns everyone. One EMT checks for his pulse; there isn't one.
"I've got no pulse. Starting compressions."
The EMT begins to perform CPR. The other talks into their walkie asking for help.
"What just happened?"
"Don't know. The epinephrine should've worked."
"Adams, move," another EMT rolls in with a wheeled cot.
They transfer Evan onto it and roll him out into an ambulance. Pat just stands there watching his friend/partner being wheeled away. He snaps out of his stupor and rushes to the CSI division. The man practically bashes the door in when he reaches his destination.
"Allen!" he shouts.
Barry looks up to see Pat panting. He walks closer to him.
"Smith, what's wrong?"
"Evan...Evan, he...they...they had to take him and...and..."
Barry grabs Pat's shoulders and grips them ever so slighty. "Smith, breathe. What happened to Evan?"
"He had an allergic reaction to some sports drink. EMTs arrived and gave him the EpiPen. It worked for a second but then he passes out. They just rolled him out. I think they took him to Central Gen."
"Here's what I want you to do. Tell Singh what happened and tell him I'm going to the hospital. Do not breathe a word to Mia and make sure the media doesn't get wind of this."
"Yeah," he nods, "I can do those."
"Before you go, what drink did Evan have?"
"That new drink from LexCorp; Reach."
"Thanks."
Barry sprints out of there and heads to the hospital.

Mia's visiting Wally like she's always done. Today, is their monthly game of Scrabble. It's a tie right now.
"So, how are you feeling?" Wally wonders.
"Physically or mentally?"
"Both."
"Mentally, I'm fine."
"And Labiwa?"
"Still a pain but she's okay I guess." Mia pauses, "No, I don't think that's a word."
Wally squints at her. "What?"
"Sorry, Labiwa's convincing me that trichotillomania is a real word."
"Well, let's check." Wally searches through the dictionary and frowns. "She's right."
"Awesome!" Mia sets down her letters to fill in the word. She counts the points and smirks at her cousin. "I win."
"No you don't," Wally states not believing her.
"Check it then," she challenges him.
He counts the points. The guy hangs his head in defeat. Mia laughs in triumph.
"Cheater," he mumbles.
"How am I a cheater?" she laughs.
"Cause you're getting help."
"Yeah well, kind of hard to ignore a homicidal murderess constantly talking about wanting to kill someone or torture them in my head. I wish I can get her out but unless there's a machine that can split my personalities into two, I'm stuck with her."
A light bulb goes off. Mia notices. She covers his face with her hands.
"What?" Wally mumbles in her hands.
"Don't even think about creating something like that Wally. I was being sarcastic."
"Well, you never know."
"Don't give her any ideas."
Wally's phone rings. Mia lets him go and starts cleaning up while he answers. Looking down at the caller, he wonders why Barry's calling him. Not wanting Mia to overhear him, Wally heads outside to answer.
"Uncle Barry."
'Wally, listen to me carefully. I need you to bring Mia to Central City General right now.'
"Why? What happened?" his voice becoming lower.
'I can't tell you over the phone. Just bring her here now. It's important.'
Barry hangs up. Wally stares at his phone wondering why his uncle is being so cryptic. He heads back inside.
"Hey Mi. Why don't we head out to Central City and grab some coffee there?"
"Wally."
He looks over to her to see her pale as snow. She stumbles a little walking to the couch. Wally zooms up to her then helps her ease onto the couch.
"Hey, what's wrong?"
"I just got a call from Central Gen."
"Why?" "That's the same hospital Uncle Barry just told me."
"Evan is um…he's in the hospital."
"Okay, let's go over there now and we'll deal with this together."
"Sure."
Wally helps her up. They take a zeta tube to Central City.

They exit from an abandoned photo booth in an alleyway near the hospital. Mia feels her body going limp. Wally keeps her standing tall. The duo reaches the receptionist's desk.
"Um, excuse me," Mia softly says.
The receptionist looks up, "Hi. How can I help you?"
"I'm...um, I'm looking for my husband. He's name is Evan O'—"
"Mia, Wally," Barry walks over.
"Dad," Mia hugs him.
"I'll take you to him."
He guides her to the elevators. Wally quickly thanks the receptionist and follows them. Once off the elevators, Barry leads them to Evan's room. In the waiting room are tons of officers dressed in their blues and detectives as well. Their eyes land on Mia when she comes around the corner. They salute to her in respect.
Singh approaches them. "You have my condolences."
Mia pushes off her dad so she can stand on her own. She speaks lowly, "Why are you making it sound like he's dead?"
"It's better to see for yourself Mia," Barry answers.
She swallows the lump in her throat. Barry leads her to the room Evan's in. He opens the door for her. The speedster hears his daughter gasping. Mia walks slowly to her husband's bedside.
Seeing him hooked up to a breathing machine sends a chill down her spine. He looks peaceful but deep down, she feels his pain. Even Labiwa is speechless. Mia grabs hold of Evan's hand and latches onto it.
"What happened?" she whispers.
"Evan drank the sports drink made by the Reach and Luthor. Pat told me he had an allergic reaction. Called in the EMTs, they gave him an EpiPen and he seemed better. Next thing anyone knew, he became unconscious and entered into a coma."
"A coma? I thought the results you and Palmer got only revealed it would track potential metahumans and make humans complacent."
"That's what we found."
"Then why is my husband in a coma?!"
"I don't know Mia."
"Hey Dad," she doesn't look at him, "if you don't mind, I want to be alone with my husband."
"Sure sweetheart."
Barry gives her a kiss and leaves the room. The doctor shows up.
"Are you family?" he asks Barry.
"Yes. I'm his father-in-law."
"And how close are you with the patient?"
"I just said I'm his father-in-law," Barry frowns.
"Sorry, just making sure everything's in order."
"So," Barry crosses his arms, "what are his results?"
"They're inconclusive."
"What?"
"We don't know what caused him to enter into a coma. Based on the information we gathered from the EMTs, he should be awake after receiving the EpiPen."
"So, what are you going to do?"
"We'll keep him in for observation and hope he wakes up on his own."
Barry eyes the results in the doctor's hand. "May I?" he gestures to the results.
"I can't give you patient results even though you're family. Doctor-patient confidentiality."
"I'm a CSI."
"You can be the president of the United States for all I care. I'll still be breaking doctor-patient confidentiality."
"This can stay between us. No one else will know."
"Here." The doctor takes a chance with Barry. He hands Evan's charts over to him. "Maybe you'll get a better understanding of these results."
"Thanks."
The doctor leaves. Little by little, the waiting room crowd dwindles down to just Barry and Wally. He shares the test results with Wally; hopefully they can get down to the bottom of this.
"How long did CCPD drink Reach?" Wally asks.
"I didn't even know they had a vending machine for it."
"Think anyone else had the same reaction to it like Evan did?"
"Impossible to say. If they did and the family brings it to the media's attention, Luthor would've bought their silence or made the whole thing go away."
"Now what?"
Barry sighs. "Now, we pray and hope Evan wakes up."
"Poor Mia," Wally thinks as he stares at the closed door.

April 17, 22:43 CDT
She never left her husband's side for five days straight unless someone forced her to leave. Everyone visited them in the hospital; the Team, members of the League, coworkers, and family. Mia couldn't face Evan's family when they arrived. His mom's so devastated. Connie, his niece, stayed near Mia instead of her uncle.
"Hey, Auntie Mia."
"Yes Connie?"
"Why does Uncle Evan have a tube down his throat?" she innocently asks.
"It's to help him breathe." She pulls her into her lap, "See that machine right next to the bed?" The little girl nods. "That's helping him breathe."
"Oh." Connie waits a beat, "Is he going to wake up soon?"
"Yes, any day now." That's what she's been telling herself. "He's going to wake up any day now."
This has been her mantra for the past five days. What's even more surprising is Labiwa hasn't made a peep since they saw him. It has weirded Mia out so much, she initiated the conversation.
"Labiwa?" No response. "Are you even there anymore?"
She doesn't push it any further. Mia stayed sitting in a comfy chair a nurse gave her. The poor woman would fall asleep on it. Without her knowing, Nightwing had been visiting in the middle of the night when there were no missions. He couldn't help but feel guilty for letting all of this happen. "It was just supposed to be a one-time gig. I roped her back into this life." Nightwing would always place a blanket over Mia and even gives her a light peck to the head.
Connor had arrived earlier today and pushed her out of the room just so she can go home to eat and shower. She tried to argue but the Kryptonian-human hybrid clone wasn't having it. Once he knew Mia was gone, he talks to Evan not knowing if he can actually hear him or not but it's worth a try.
"Geez Evan. You're making Mia so worried and us too. To think I was nervous for her but now I'm nervous for you. You have a dangerous job."
The EKG beeps.
"Yeah, yeah I know. I have a dangerous job too but at least I'm invulnerable. You and all of the other cops only wear bullet-proof vests yet those don't even work sometimes. When you wake up, we're going out somewhere and you're going to remind me why we let Mia marry a cop."
When Mia came back, Connor left. He didn't want to invade their privacy. It's near eleven at night and Mia's still up. She curses at herself daily for falling asleep. Tonight...tonight is going to be different. Mia talks to him like always.
"Guess what. Ana Sophia and Constantine are getting hitched."
EKG beeps.
"I can't believe it either. It's crazy to think they would get married. I feel a little bad for Constantine since my mom will haunt him for the rest of his life. The only thing I wish for is that he treats her right. Who knows, maybe Ana Sophia aged quickly because of all those years she spent with Klarion in the other realm and is, hopefully, older. Do you think they'll elope or have an actual wedding?"
Mia holds his hand in hers. She traces the back of it with her thumb. The young Latina brings her husband's hand to her lips.
"Please wake up," she whispers.
Suddenly, his hand twitches. Mia leans back a little. Evan's hand curls around hers and latches onto it. With hesitation, Mia squeezes his hand. He squeezes back. Tears of joy trickles down her cheeks.
"Nurse! Nurse!"

April 22, 11:23 CDT
The doctor has taken Evan off the machine after confirming there's brain activity. Five days passed since they have taken him off the machine and now, all he has to do now is to open his eyes. Mia has been "patiently" waiting for him to wake up which equals to nagging the doctor and the poor nurses. Wally has been keeping her in check so the hospital staff can do their jobs.
"Mia, leave them alone."
"I just have one question to ask."
"From certain perspectives, this can be seen as harassment," Wally states.
"How can it be harassment if I'm asking questions about my husband's health?"
"You are constantly pestering and interrogating them."
"But—"
"He's going to wake up on his own. I promise," Wally cuts her off.
She sighs. "Fine."
Mia cups Evan's cheek. Her thumb gently caresses his cheekbone. She leans in and gives him a kiss on the lips. To her surprise, she feels him kissing back. Evan moans happily. Mia leans away from him.
"Guess I'm Snow White," he smirks.
"Evan," tears fall down her cheeks. "You're awake."
"I am."
"You scared us man."
"Hey Wally. Thanks."
"For what?"
"For taking care of our girl," Evan smiles.
"Any time."
Evan leans back into the bed as he groans in pain. He covers his ears with his hands. Mia cups his face. Worry written all over hers.
"Evan, Evan what's wrong?"
"Can't you hear that?"
"Hear what?"
He bites back his scream. Mia looks to Wally with desperation. Wally's brain starts coming up with answers.
"Evan. Explain what the sound is. Is it high or low?"
"H-High."
"Where can you hear it from?"
"It's down...it's down the hall. Gah!"
"Wally," Mia whispers.
"I'm on it. Just keep him calm."
Wally exits the room. He follows Evan's direction. The speedster walks down the hall and listens for any high frequencies. "This would go a lot faster with Connor."
Wally stops when he hears a constant beeping noise. With his ears as his guide, Wally finds the source of the sound; it's the microwave in the staff's lounge. Wally uses his superspeed to turn off the microwave and calmly walks back to Evan's room.
He reaches Evan's room and sees his cousin-in-law more relaxed. Mia turns her head to find him standing by the door.
"Well?"
"It was a microwave down the hall."
"How can he hear that from here?"
"I have an idea about it." Wally stands on the other side of Evan. "Hey man."
"Yeah?"
"What else can you hear at this exact moment?"
Evan breathes deeply. He covers his eyes with his hand. "I hear a consistent pounding. Almost like a machine gun."
"Anything else?"
"There's another pounding sound. It's not like the first one but it's constant though."
"Those are our hearts; Mia's and mine," Wally gently explains.
"What?" the married couple say in sync.
"Evan...you're a metahuman and I think your powers have something to do with sound frequencies."
