Chapter 32.

=Hiccup's POV=
[November 25; Morning]
[Hunter Isle; Grimborn Home]

I've been here on Hunter Isle for a week. It's surprisingly peaceful, except the dragon raids. I suddenly understand why Viggo and Ryker, along with the other dragon hunters, continue to hunt them. It wasn't just business; they were plagued with attacks still. Viggo and Ryker informed me that the raids are why they killed dragons, and also that sometimes generations ago, is how the business got started. Not only are they trying to help others who are plagued with dragon attacks, but also using the product to take care of their people. As much as I didn't like to think of the idea of dragons getting hurt, I did understand that some couldn't be trained, or refused to alter their wild nature. Also, I didn't know what was causing these raids. I know Red Death was the reason for the ones on Berk, and subsequently, Outcast, Berserker, and some others. When the dragons of that nest were free of Red Death's control, it made them more comfortable to be worked with and trained. I wanted to find out, but if I managed to stop the raids for them, what happened to their business?

I considered talking to Viggo and Ryker about things, but right now, I'm still working on adjusting to residing on an island with a full tribe where only some know about my powers. That first night was pretty quiet during dinner, and shortly after finishing, I got shown where the bathroom was, then the room where I'd be staying for now. It was a lot like my dad's place, a small set of stairs from the second level leading to a closed-off loft area. It was perfect for Toothless and me, and there was a ramp outside, which led to a more significant entrance; that's how Toothless can get in. There's a little porch too, so that's nice for Toothless and me. I have a decent-sized bed, nightstand, closet, and just a few days ago, added a desk. I was becoming more comfortable here, but still hesitant, nervous, and scared about what would happen if my secret came out.

Also, being here didn't erase the memories or pain of what happened to get me where I am. The next morning, I washed up, changed clothes, and joined the Grimborn family for breakfast. Following that, I got given a tour of the house. It was a three-story with the main rooms on the ground/first level, bedrooms on the second, and now, me on the third. The house had several bedrooms and bathrooms, a large office, kitchen/dining area, and living space. It was excellent and beautiful. I did get a tour of the village the next day, only because after the showing of the home; I spent time getting used to it and unpacking. After that, I was exhausted to sit through dinner and end up going to sleep before 8:00 pm. The village was great too, big, but organized. I noticed that homes were generally in one area, and the rest of the town was kind of like a market.

Shops, food stands, forge, even a tavern with an inn for if customers got too drunk to get home. There was a regular inn also, for visitors, I think. Hunter Isle didn't get many, but according to the Grimborn brothers, it happened from time to time. And some even ended up staying once deciding to be part of the tribe if they had nowhere else to go. There were farm animals, some of which I hadn't seen before, and of course the fields. One thing I knew would be present was a Great Hall, Viggo and Ryker explained that they only used it for lockdowns, meetings, and big celebrations. Otherwise, all families ate at home. The docks were much more significant than what I saw the night I arrived here, different kinds of ships. I loved the woods too. One of the best features was how warm it was here, still a bit cold with stronger winds, but mostly sunny weather.

Hunter Isle was terrific, and definitely more advanced and somewhat modernized than other Viking-inhabited islands. I adored the town center, a vast open area in the middle of the village that had a flag stand, flying the symbol for the Dragon Hunter Tribe. I told Viggo and Ryker how great their home island was; I wasn't ashamed to admit it. A lot of what they had here is what I had ideas for regarding Berk, and I received permission to invent to my heart's content if I ended up with some desire to make something run smoother or better. I joked a bit and told them they were giving me a dangerous power to play with, referring to my mind and having the freedom to work on things that needing fixing, or could help overall. All Viggo and Ryker said after that was the same thing from the ship; don't be afraid to be me. I nodded, but I was still scared, and I think they knew that.

Cinder, Stormfly, Barf, Belch, and Hookfang have adjusted nicely too; I dare say they seem happier here. Eventually, I would give the riders their dragons back; I wasn't heartless. For now, the dragons are better here while the riders thing about what they did. I was sure Heather, Dagur, and maybe even Fishlegs might have said something to them during the flight back to Berk. I was waiting for an attack to happen because I know how my father is. I've warned Viggo and Ryker to be on guard with it as well. Not only do we have to worry about my father to launch something, but Johann too. I wasn't sure when he'd be showing up, but I'm sure his failed idea of sending the riders after I was making him step back to replan. I didn't care what Johann was up to, I know he's just a pawn in the game, but I needed him to make it to the boss.

Most of this past week has been getting used to the island. After all, if I was going to be here for a while, as it was hinted at several times, I should know the layout of the island and know the people I'm around. So, I've spent the week since arriving exploring and meeting everyone. The dragon hunter tribe isn't as big as I thought, but still a good number. Shockingly, the hunters lived a straightforward and peaceful life. However, with the adjustment period about over for me, I've slipped back into my I'm here because I'm here mindset. I'm here because I have nowhere else to go, somehow made friends with people I considered my enemies a year ago, and they were kind enough to let me stay with them. Toothless and the other dragons were able to stay too. I'm still quiet and don't talk much.

I know it makes the people uneasy, but I went through hell, and I'm not just going to be okay again. Things are more relaxed with Toothless, but that doesn't take away what happened to me. I know Viggo and Ryker want to know, but I'm just not ready to talk about it. I don't know if I ever will be. More pieces of my memory are starting to come back, but quick and sometimes takes me a little to figure out what part of the last year they belonged. Remembering things is also not helping my mood any, and I think Viggo and Ryker's family members are picking up on it, but the brothers are subtly mentioning for them to leave it alone. I haven't worked on Toothless's tail at all, and that's due to the fact the blacksmith was apparently out picking up a few things from the closest port that he needed. Viggo promised that when he came back, I could meet him, and the man probably wouldn't mind at all if I worked in the forge a bit.

Right now, it's about 8:30 am and we'd all just finished breakfast. The Grimborn heirs quickly cleaned up and hurried out to enjoy the rather lovely day we had. Hertha and Truda got started on cleaning up the table, then heading out to grab a few things from the markets. I was now left with Viggo and Ryker as we stayed at the table.

"So, what are your plans for today, Hiccup?" Ryker inquired.

I shrugged. "I dunno. Maybe go explore the forest more, draw…" I replied.

"Would you perhaps want to accompany us to the forge?" Viggo asked as I looked at him quickly. "Our smith returned last night, but you'd already gone off to bed. I believe he's the last in the village for you to meet, and didn't you want to work on a new rig for Toothless's tail?" He offered.

"Yeah, he's itching to fly again," I nodded. "Okay, I'll come along. When are we going?" I wondered.

"We're headed off right now to greet him; he has a few things we asked for anyway," Ryker said as he and Viggo stood from the table, I followed suit and whistled to Toothless as he got up and followed the three of us outside. The walk wasn't too far, and I realized that the Grimborn home sat near the Great Hall, just like most villages had it set up. I wasn't sure why that's how it was, but I noticed it a lot. I loved the style of buildings the hunters had; it was a mix of rock and wood, definitely sturdy and looked more beautiful. The best part about the town was everything being a five to twenty-minute walk. Anything past the treeline into the forest was farther, as I'd learned in my adventuring.

Arriving at the blacksmith's shop, I realized there were two areas with it all opened up. One side was the forge for making, repairing, and sharpening weapons. The other was the actual shop to buy things. The man running the forge was tall, well-built, hazel eyes, short brown hair, and mustache going down around his lips to a small beard that was tied together. If I had to take a guess, this man was aged somewhere in his forties. "Viggo, Ryker! Good to have you home again!" The man greeted when he set a crate down and looked over at the Grimborn brothers.

"Aye, you as well, friend," Ryker shook the man's hand.

"I trust your travels were well?" Viggo asked.

"Oh, always. I got the things you asked for in your letter," The man stated. "I almost missed the message," He added with a laugh as he brought over the few things for them.

"Much appreciated," Viggo smiled, handing the man a small pouch of coins. With the man closer now, I guess he noticed me leaning against Toothless and grew curious.

"You…Are aware a young man is laying against a Night Fury behind you, yes?" The man inquired.

"Oh, yes. Of course," Viggo nodded as he turned and motioned to me with his hand. "You haven't met our guest yet, and you were off when we arrived last week," He informed. "This young man is the reason we managed to have a successful year after what happened. Come, come, my boy," Viggo invited me towards him. I stood straight and shifted between Viggo and Ryker.

"Ulrik, meet Hiccup Raseri, leader of the dragon riders," Ryker introduced.

"And our friend," Viggo added. "Hiccup, this is Ulrik Solberg, the dragon hunter's blacksmith," He continued as I saw Ulrik smile and offer his hand to mind; I returned the two gestures as Ulrik put his hands on his hips.

"Good to meet ya, lad," Ulrik stated.

"You as well," I replied with a nod.

"So, anything I can do for you two? Our leaders have always been served first," Ulrik wondered.

"No, thing for us…" Ryker said. "But perhaps for Hiccup,"

"Yes. You see, Ulrik…Hiccup here was trained to be a blacksmith from a young age, and has created some pretty incredible things using those skills and a very vivid imagination." Viggo mentioned as Ulrik rubbed his chin and looked me up and down. "It appears to be one of Hiccup's favorite things to do, so we wondered if perhaps you wouldn't mind sharing the space with him?"

"If he ever comes by and wants to work on something, I'm sure he wouldn't mind lending a helping hand or two if you got behind?" Ryker went on.

"Well, I don't just let anyone stroll in here. I gotta know and see what Hiccup can do," Ulrik remarked. "I'm…Sure you understand, Hiccup, with working alongside your mentor in the past?"

I shrugged. "Well, not really. My mentor was the guy who raised me in my father's absence from about age three. I started as his apprentice when I was six, became his assistant at ten, and worked alongside him until I was just about a month from turning nineteen…I'm going to be twenty in three months." I told him calmly.

"That is a young age to become an apprentice. I started at thirteen and trained for six years. I've been running this shop about ten years on my own now," Ulrik stated. "So, you've learned everything?" I nodded. "Have anything on ya that you can show me you've done?" He wondered.

"I've got my leg…I left the sword and shield at the house," I responded as Isak blinked.

"Your…Leg?" Ulrik asked. I adjusted a bit to pull my left leg out of the boot and reveal it to a prosthetic. Ulrik scrambled around outside to get a better look. "You made this yourself?"

"Ah, that he did," Ryker laughed. "We watched him do it on the ship,"

"The ship?" Ulrik looked up at Ryker.

"Yes, yes. It was quite ingenious too. Hiccup crafted all this using makeshift tools and the fireplace in our shared chamber," Viggo chuckled. "We did see the finished product of the sword and shield, though. Brilliant inventions and never thought possible," He added.

"Believe me, Ulrik…This kid can do some amazing things. His first project now that we've docked back home is recreating his Night Fury's prosthetic tail," Ryker informed.

"Really? I have to see," Ulrik smiled. "I'll tell you what, Hiccup. You let me watch the creation of this dragon tail prosthetic, and it's successful; I'll let you work in here any time you desire. No charge on materials,"

"Got yourself a deal," I grinned. Oh, I loved it when people challenged me. I loved being able to stick it to someone who ended up being wrong. I'm not saying Ulrik is wrong, but I know how people are when it comes to their skills. Gobber wouldn't let just anyone in his shop either; he only trusted me to work things in his absence. I even had a key to the forge on Berk; I still have it. Gobber gave it to me when I was thirteen as a birthday gift.

"Come on in, then," Ulrik invited.

"Stay there, Toothless," I told my Night Fury before heading into the forge.

"We'll be watching too. I want to see this," Viggo smiled as he and Ryker joined to sit down.

"Might take me a little longer than the first time; I don't have my drawings or blueprints of the original design," I admitted as I got out my notebook and sat down at the table, beginning to draw the end bit of Toothless's tail with the missing fin. After that, I started working on the prosthetic design.

"I can't wait to see this," Ryker stated while I worked. About fifteen minutes later, I finally got something that would work to allow me to fly still Toothless, but let him some flight on his own too; if the situation called for it.

"Alright, here we go…" I said as I pinned the design up, and Ulrich handed me a smaller apron. I nodded to him in thanks before I got to work.

. . .

[Afternoon]
[Hunter Isle; Forge]

The only break taken was for lunch at noon, but everything else; I'd been in the forge working hard on Toothless's rig. I wanted it a bit easier to manage this time, perhaps less metal and more durable. It's about 3:00 pm right now, so I'd been at this most of the day, and I'll be thrilled if I got it on the first try and was able to fly for a little bit. I think that might be why I'm so off lately; I can't do any of the things I love to do, and I got abandoned by the people I thought cared about me. But maybe if I can get back in the air, it might help, even if just a little bit. I found it hilarious that a lot of people were strolling by the blacksmith shop to see what I was doing, some stayed, others went about their day but would pop in to see progress. I know that right now, all of the Grimborn family members are present and some of the ship crew too. Cinder and the other three dragons dropped by and were relaxing with Toothless. Finally, I was just about done, and I'm sure many who were watching were confused as it didn't look like anything they'd ever seen.

As I put the last part in place, then secured it, I wiped my brow and smiled a bit. "There…Done," I said with my hands on my hips.

"How does this contraption allow the dragon to fly?" Brynjar, Viggo's son, asked.

"Yes, didn't you say you were going to go with the automatic tail?" Viggo wondered.

"The brat over there won't let me give him the automatic one," I rolled my eyes. "Isn't that right, your highness?" Toothless gave a little yell, shaking his head and giving a huff. "See?" I chuckled. I grabbed the rig in my arms and exited the forge once taking off the apron. "Come here, bud," I called to him as Toothless darted over and sat still for me to get the rig on him. "There, what do you think of that, Toothless? Not a lot of metal, lighter, easier to move in?" Toothless roared and licked my face several times with a happy, gummy smile. "The tail is stronger and lighter too. Now…I did give this an added feature for you to fly alone," I explained to him as he growled. "But only for the sake if we get separated in flight. Okay?" Toothless mumbled, bit gave in. I finished getting the gear on him and stepped back.

"So, this allows you to fly him?" Ryker questioned.

I nodded. "As long as I didn't mess anything up," I replied. "What do you say, bud? Should we give it a shot?" Toothless bounded around me, then stopped so I could get on his back, more like his neck and the space between his shoulders. I shifted into the black saddle, a new improvement I decided on, then moved my feet on the left and right pedals. I tested the left one and looked back to see the black tail fin moving with force on the pedal. "Good, good. That's all working," I whispered before making sure everything else was all set. "Alright, buddy. Ready to give it a shot, and hopefully don't repeat five years ago?" Toothless snickered a bit. "Then it's go time! Hit the sky, Toothless!" I called. Toothless roared out as he ran forward and launched into the sky quickly. I felt the natural breeze and opened my eyes when I felt Toothless level out. I couldn't help the wide smile come across my face. "WOO! YEAH!" I cheered. Finally, Toothless and I were back together in the sky.
