Once the reception ended, everyone headed back to the hotels they were staying at. Again, the team all picked the same hotel and were all on the third floor. The LaMontage crew all headed up to their room and got ready for bed. Will and Michael were in one bed, Henry was in a cot, and JJ and Sophia were in the other bed.
Sophia was having trouble falling asleep that night. She kept moving around and JJ could tell her mind was somewhere else. Sophia shifted again and moved so she was on her side.
"Soph?" JJ whispered.
"What?" the child whispered back.
"What's going on with you? Are you okay?" Jennifer asked.
Sophia sighed then said,
"It's Emily."
"What about her?"
"She told me that she couldn't keep me because of my father," the kid explained.
"Makes sense," JJ commented.
"Wait. You know who he is?" Sophia wanted to know.
"I know a little about him," JJ told her reluctantly.
"Like what?"
"Listen, I think this is a conversation you should have with-"
"Emily...I know," Sophia finished the blonde's sentence.
"I'm sorry. I wish I could tell you, but it's not my place."
"Ugh, fine."
"So you'll talk to Emily tomorrow?" JJ asked hopefully.
"I don't know, maybe," Sophia said softly.
"We should get some sleep," JJ mentioned.
"I guess you're right," Sophia sighed.
"Goodnight Sophia," JJ said and reached over and kissed the girl's head.
"Night," Sophia said back.
The next morning, Sophia woke up to find everyone else gone. Will and the boys were down at breakfast and JJ was waiting for Sophia.
"Hey, you're up," JJ said walking out of the bathroom into the bedroom.
Sophia nodded and rubbed her eyes a little.
"The boys are down at breakfast, so whenever you're ready we'll go."
Sophia got up and dressed and then headed down to breakfast with JJ.
By the time she got there, everyone else was already settled and sitting around talking. Sophia spotted Morgan, Savannah and Hank at one table with Garcia and Reid, and then Will, the boys and Emily at the next table with Hotch and Jack.
Sophia went and made herself a waffle as JJ got a cup of coffee. Then the two joined the table Will was at. Sophia ended up next to Jack, but about five minutes into her meal, Jack and Aaron got up to leave and go back to their room to pack, leaving Sophia next to Emily.
Sophia stared down at her food and tried to ignore the woman next to her, which was hard.
"When do you fly back?" JJ asked Prentiss.
"Tomorrow morning," Emily replied.
"Ugh, I wish you were here longer," JJ told her.
"Me too," the brunette said back.
"Hey, why don't we have a little dinner tonight so we can catch up before you leave?" Jennifer offered.
"Are you sure?" Emily asked, eying her daughter.
"Yeah, the whole team can come and it'll be like the good old days," JJ said with a smile.
"Okay," Emily agreed.
"How's six?"
"Six is good," Prentiss replied.
Later that night, JJ was preparing for her little family dinner she had planned. Everyone on the team was going except for Hotch because he was having a father son weekend with Jack and wanted to be dedicated to that.
Before all the guests arrived, JJ popped her head into Sophia's room.
"Hey, I just wanted to make sure you're going to be okay tonight," Jennifer said.
"What do you mean? I'll be fine," Sophia assured her.
"If you say so," the blonde said and then kept walking.
Sophia sighed.
She promised herself that that night she wouldn't let Emily get the best of her and that she would keep her cool. Little did she know what was in store for her.
Emily was the last guest to arrive and when she did, the conversation died down a little and Sophia went silent. The rest of the night went smoothly, that is, until dinner.
"Reid, can you pass the salad?" JJ asked from across the table.
The genius did as she had asked.
By that point, the team was talking about Emily and her work and how she was going back.
"And how's Mark?" Garcia asked and gave her friend a teasing smile.
"Actually, Mark and I broke up," Emily informed her.
"I know. I'm not asking about that Mark," Penelope said back with a grin. Sophia looked up at her mom wondering if this Mark guy was her father.
"You know, it scares me how much you know about me and I live across the Atlantic," Prentiss said with a light laugh.
Garcia smiled but said,
"Cmon, I want the details," the tech begged.
"Okay, well. He's a plastic surgeon and an old friend," Emily stated.
"And?" Garcia asked.
"And he's a really great guy," Prentiss added.
"Those weren't the details I wanted," Penelope complained, making those around the table chuckle.
"Well, that's all you're getting for now. In case you forgot, my thirteen year old daughter is sitting right next to you, and we're all eating, so I think I should spare you all the details," Emily joked.
Penelope looked over at Sophia, who was in fact right next to her and apologized to her.
The conversation started back up again, and then all of a sudden, Sophia blurted out,
"Who's my father?"
Everyone went silent.
Emily put her fork down and looked over at her kid.
Garcia and Morgan glanced at each other awkwardly, knowing this was going to be a bad conversation.
"Sophia-" JJ warned.
"No, I deserve to know who I came from. Everyone else here knows who their parents are, why can't I?" The girl asked with a little bit of an attitude.
"Sophia, calm down," JJ said softly.
"I am calm. I just want Emily to tell me the truth for once," Sophia said.
"Listen, it's really complicated-" Prentiss tried telling her.
"No, it's not. I know someone knocked you up and you ended up with me. All I wanna know is who did the honors," Sophia said.
"Sophia!" JJ exclaimed and turned towards the girl. "You do not get to talk to Emily like that-"
"No. You can't tell me what I can and can't do. You are not my mother," Sophia stated, raising her voice at the blonde.
JJ looked over at Will for help.
Emily was surprised with how blunt the girl was, but then again, she was her daughter.
"Alright Sophia-" Will started to say.
"No. I want Emily to answer the damn question!" Sophia demanded.
"I don't think this is the best time to tell you," Prentiss told her sternly.
"Why? Because it was a one night stand and you don't even remember the guy's name?" Sophia questioned.
"Slut," she muttered.
Emily was taken aback by what her daughter had called her.
"That's it!" JJ said and slammed her hand on the table.
"Apologize to Emily right now!"
"Not until she tells me who my dad is," Sophia said.
"You are in no place to bargain right now. Either apologize or go to your room!" JJ told her.
Sophia glared at Emily.
"Now's really not the time. I'm sorry," Prentiss said to her.
"Coward," Sophia hissed.
"Sophia!" JJ nearly screamed.
The girl got up looked at Emily and said,
"Just once I want you to tell me the truth. Is that so much to ask for?"
Then she walked to her room and slammed the door.
Emily stood up to follow her.
"Leave her. It's better if she has time to cool off," JJ warned.
Prentiss sat back down.
"Should I have told her?" Emily asked.
"I think finding out about you was enough excitement for a while. If she found out about Doyle, then she'd probably have a heart attack," JJ said.
"Hold up. Doyle is her father?" Morgan asked with a shocked look on his face.
"Unfortunately," Emily said.
"Why didn't she show up in the investigation?" Derek wanted to know.
"Because I didn't want her to. I hid her very well," Prentiss told him.
"If you could find her, that meant he could too," Emily added.
"Yeah, it's good you held off. I don't think she's mentally ready to accept something big like that," Derek agreed.
Emily sighed and looked back down at her food.
"I'm sorry, I can't just leave her like that," Prentiss said and got up and followed her daughter.
JJ got up as well and followed the brunette.
"Emily wait," she called.
Prentiss approached her daughter's room and knocked on the door.
No answer.
She tried the door knob but it was locked.
"Sophia, please. I just want to talk," Emily said.
Inside, Sophia was curled up in her bed trying to hold her cries in as tears rolled down her face. Her little body began shaking and she felt her heart beating outside of her chest.
"Honey, please just let me in," Emily begged and rested her head on the door.
Sophia couldn't hold it in anymore and she let out a little whimper and then completely broke.
Emily could hear her little girl sobbing and it was slowly and painfully breaking her heart into a million little pieces.
Prentiss felt a hand on her back and picked her head up from the door and turned around.
It was JJ.
"She's crying. I made my own daughter cry," Emily said and took a deep breath.
"Emily, she's coping-"
"I never should've came back. I should've just left her alone. She would've been happy with you-"
"No, she needs you. You're her mother," JJ tried to explain.
"JJ, nothing I do is right. I hurt her more and more every time I see her and it's not fair," Prentiss said.
"Em, she's going to be okay," the blonde said and rubbed her friends arm for support.
Just then, they heard Sophia coughing from crying so hard.
"Oh my god. I can't," Prentiss said and tried opening the door as hard as she could.
JJ pulled out the key and unlocked the door.
"Stay here," she warned.
The blonde entered the room and went over to the hysterical child.
"I'm so sorry," Sophia cried and fell into JJ's arms.
Jennifer caught the girl and squeezed her tight.
"Shhhhh. It's okay, sweetheart," JJ assured her.
Sophia looked up to see Emily standing in the doorway and when she did she tucked her head back into JJ's shoulder and just cried.
"Please make her leave," Sophia whispered into JJ's ear.
JJ just kept on rubbing the child's back and calming her down.
When Emily heard what Sophia said, she turned and left.
Prentiss returned to the dinner table, got her jacket and walked out of the house without saying goodbye to anyone.
She heard Morgan and Rossi follow her out, but she ran back to her car and right as she was about to pull out, Derek jumped in her car.
"What the hell are you doing?" she asked him. Her voice was uneven and her lips were quivering.
"I'm not letting you drive like this," he said and put his hand on top of hers which were on the steering wheel.
"Morgan, let me go," she told him.
"No. You do not get to do this again. You do not get to just leave your kid behind. Your little girl is in there crying her eyes out because of you. Are you really just going to leave her like that?" He asked.
"She hates me. What do you want me to do?"
"Stay. Make an effort. Show her that you're not the type of mother to just leave when times get hard. Show her that you're there for her and that no matter what you'll always be there for her. She needs to know she can count on you and if you keep going back to London without talking to her then she won't."
