***MANSION***
'I don't care what anyone thinks, being a Hobbit is almost as good as my duplication ability.' I stretched as I woke up and looked around at all the Hobbits laying on the bed. It may have just been Fleur, Luna and I but there were clones and duplicates as well. 'Making copies to sleep was a genius idea with all the work we've been doing.'
"Starting a new Jump can be such a pain, especially since we've been setting up that magical district." Fleur lightly complained, I smiled and pulled her closer.
"Being lazy takes a lot of work you know, we need to set up the system and smooth it out. It won't be long before people start taking over the roles they want." Fleur pouted and I could hear Luna giggle from my other side, I just turned and kissed Fleur.
"The House Elves have already taken over many of the duties and jobs, for example a large group has taken over the farms." Luna cuddles into me as she adds her two cents.
"The coin system we came up with is simple and effective, I don't think it will take long to take over bartering." I stopped as shadow clones started dismissing themselves and duplicates and reintegrated. The three of us slipped into silence as we reviewed the different experiences we gained.
After a few minutes the three of us created duplicates that quickly got dressed and left, leaving the three of us relaxing in bed. While everyone was rushing off to start working we were taking our time.
***THE KINGDOM***
It took a month for the Hobbits to begin showing signs of having magic, during that time I had managed to design and build a magical district. The district was all contained within a relatively small area and expanded. I had built the district to be self contained with everything that would be needed contained inside.
I wasn't going to discourage my tiny subjects from using magic outside the area, far from it I was hoping they would adapt magic into their lives. For me it was a bit of an experiment, I wanted to see if adding magic into the Hobbits lives would have an impact on their average lifespan.
Fleur, Luna and I wouldn't be hiding anything from the Hobbits, they had already gotten used to the House Elf community and their desire to help. What was amusing for me was watching the House Elves realization that they were being treated as equals. It wasn't unusual to see mixed groups drinking at the bar.
One of the things I had created enmass were scrolls enchanted with shadow clone, that way everyone was able to make use of the ability without needing the ability. It turned out all of the Hobbits wanted to learn how to use magic, with clones it allowed everyone to be in school while at the same time do as they wanted outside the magical district.
We weren't even going to enforce any education beyond the bare minimum level of control and spellwork. While I did have a large amount of knowledge restricted for safety purposes, everything else was available. Nobody was forced to learn, but there also weren't many restrictions either.
I hadn't given anyone the duplication ability for a variety of reasons, the same as why I wouldn't be training them on how to make their own shadow clones. Every Hobbit within my kingdom started with the same base abilities, like with the knowledge it would be up to individuals to seek them out. I was curious to see how they would turn out.
***MANSION WORKSHOP***
A small group was standing around a design table that was projected as a hologram of the ship they were designing. In the centre the hologram was a much larger mirror copy of what they were looking at. This allowed them to make changes on the fly, and see exactly how they would look on the full sized ship.
While they could easily manipulate the interior of the vessel, surface space was needed for ablative armour, scanner, shields and weapons. Balancing form and function was slowing the design process down, but time was one thing we had in spades.
Meanwhile the duplicate in charge was in the middle of finishing designing another important piece of machinery. This machine would utilize Alchemy to create the specialized metal we would be using, and afterwards it would be used to bring the ship to life.
There were many things to do before beginning construction though, I was going to be building it from the ground up. Most if not all the technology would be invented by myself, what I was planning was uniquely different from anything I had come across so far.
I wasn't going to be adapting magic or technology to work despite the other, I was going to design them to work with each other. Technology built using magic, designed to enhance on another.
On top of that there were systems necessary for other vessels that wouldn't be needed here. Inertia dampeners? Why bother when what happens outside the ship has absolutely no effect on the inside?
***MAGICAL DISTRICT***
The best part of ruling a kingdom of Hobbits was the fact that they were self governing to a large extent. The kingdom itself had sprung from the ground as though it had been there forever. Hobbits were beginning to investigate the magical district as it began emerging from within them.
As the seed of magical power began to grow in each Hobbit they were drawn to the magical district, informal classes began almost immediately. As more of the Hobbits showed up to learn the classes became more formal, until we started teaching our first official classes.
Flashback
With the first real classes fast approaching I was feeling a little nervous. I had taught people before, led research teams yet I was still feeling trepidation at the thought of teaching a formal setting. "I almost regret not having the others, all have them have more experience teaching than I do."
Luna dope slapped me casually as she walked by. "That's exactly why they're not here, so that we stop relying on them so much."
Fleur stepped out of a portal from down the hall to join the conversation. "I agree with Luna. You are our leader and we do appreciate you treating us as equals, but all three of us need to feel equal to each other."
"That's all true, but I think it would be better for our students if they had different teachers and their styles of teaching as well." I sat on a chair and thought for a moment.
"What would you think about teaching in different forms and emulating different people? Mito had a different method of teaching than Filius, the same way Nicolas teaching potions was so far from how Severus taught."
Luna smiled and skipped over to sit beside me. "That's a great idea, it won't be long until we have more people helping us and eventually taking over."
I nod thoughtfully as I reconsidered how we were going to do this, difficult at first with a lot of work to do. 'Much less than if we didn't have House Elves helping us along.'
End Flashback
There were ten classes being held with twenty five students in each, with one teacher and four teacher's aides. On each desk was a small shrunken trunk, Iwaited until everyone was present until I began. "My name is Alexander Magus, while I'm teaching you will refer to me as Mr. Magus. I want to welcome you all to the first magical class."
I paused for a moment and looked at everyone. "As you must have noticed there is a package for each of you. We have supplied you with everything you will need in class. By the end of the day you will be able to shrink and enlarge them to make supplies easier to carry for school."
I stop and pull out a stack of parchment, and using magic send one to each student. "First off though, this is a one time use spell. Once you read them out loud a copy of you will be created, it's these copies that will stay here to take classes."
I waited until the noise died down as everyone had different reactions. "Every morning these will be provided for every student. Once the clone dismisses itself you will gain the memories and experience they had."
One by one the students read the spell outloud and the enchanted parchment did the work for them. People started leaving to find other things to do, I grinned to myself thinking it was one of my better ideas.
***ISLAND BELOW***
The House Elves created by the magic of the Island had more in common with the Elves of Arda than House Elves. One of the biggest differences was the fact that they had magical cores. 'Normal' House Elves Were dependant on magic generated by the bound and from the house they served.
Yet, like House Elves they could still use those magics. Their base form was also much different, a more apt name for them might be Half Elves. They had the same inherent beauty and grace as the Elves of Arda, only they were roughly half the size.
They were a curious mix of Elf and Magical, each one that had been born of the magic of the Island had an inherent grasp of their magic. An entirely new and powerful species that was encouraged from the very beginning. Encouraged to live in the Kingdom as they wished.
House Elves were all over the island above and below, groups of them working at various tasks. One such group was in the former farming village, they had been tearing down the buildings and storing everything. At this point only two buildings remained. The brewery and a building that was being used to store the former village.
Even more were working on the farms, using magic to plant crops and tend to them. Magical Animals were cared for, habitats looked after. They had an unconscious understanding of what the Kingdom needed and they happily provided it.
That isn't to say they only worked for others, there were many House Elves that were building their own village. A place to call their own, something that no other House Elves has ever had. They were completely free, and slowly discovering what that meant for them.
Their very nature delighted in work and providing for the needs of the many, yet they had already learned that this didn't make them less than. There would always be a large core group of House Elves that lived to serve. Over the coming years though they would slowly develop culture, something different and new.
A group of duplicates was standing in what used to be the centre of the farming village, discussing plans. "Since we're creating our spaceship from the ground up we're going to need to be able to do testing. The plan is to do it all in an expanded building."
"Are we hiding this from the Kingdom?" I shook my head in response.
"For now, yes but we built down here in case we run into problems. Even with using expanded space we need to be careful." Luna walked over and stood beside me looking at the building plans.
"Is that why the building is so large?" I shrug and point out a few things on the plans.
"I designed it this large so we could have the entrance be as large as we will need. Since I'm not sure how large our spaceship will end up being I want to be able to test the final product here." Curious Fleur walks over and takes a look at the plans.
"Why not just make the ship intangible?"
"As it turns out that works best on smaller things, anything too big and the magic is unreliable. The largest object we can use while maintaining the spell is roughly thirty meters long, fifteen meters wide and ten meters long."
I use illusion spells to give a visual to what I had said. "Ideal for smaller shuttles probes, and potentially even a weapon delivery system, it just won't work on a larger ship. A good idea, we just can't use it on our flag ship yet."
We spend a few minutes looking over the building plans and discussing the best places to build. "The building and space expansion are the easy parts, inside we're going to have to simulate different environments to test the ship in. Before we build the flag ship we're going to have to build and test an untold number of designs."
***NICOLAS' WORKSHOP***
While the duplicate in charge was creating new spells shadow clones were testing the limits of shape-changing as a clone. Since there was no cost to changing or holding an alternative form they found it easy. Undetectable clones were floating around the Island playing with their light form and their abilities in that form.
They had yet to find any way to detect clones in that form, their ability to interact while in that form was limited though. A worthy trade off since they could choose a different form if it was necessary to interact on a higher level. All in all it was a powerful and useful form, for spying and travel.
