"His fever's been down, but Nyquil wouldn't hurt him before bed since he's still stuffed up," Hailey leaned against the stair railing while putting her heels on.
"I'm a doctor," Will said.
"We've already read to him, so that box is checked," Jay straightened his tie in the mirror.
"Am I not allowed to read more than one book to him in a day?" Will asked.
"I put our numbers and Kim and Adam's on the fridge," Hailey added and passed Jay his coat.
"I have all of those numbers in my phone," Will crossed his arms.
"We've recently been into playing video games, but he's not allowed to play past 7pm because he needs to be in bed attempting to sleep at 8:30pm on the dot," Jay helped Hailey into her coat.
"He has school tomorrow," Hailey nodded.
"Okay, you know what? I'm a doctor and I know how to read a calendar and I've watched him before," Will looked between the two of them, "What is happening right now?"
"It's the first time that at least one of us hasn't tucked him into bed at night," Hailey said quietly.
"I'll take care of him," Will chuckled, "And I will give him extra hugs tonight from the both of you."
"No, don't hug him," Jay shook his head, "It's not his favorite thing."
"Okay, okay," Will put his hands up, "Go, though, have a fun night."
"Thank you," Hailey smiled and squeezed his arm. She walked around to the kitchen table, "Drew, Dad and I are gonna leave now."
Drew looked up from his puzzle, "Okay. Have fun."
Hailey lightly kissed the top of his head, "Be good for Doctor Will."
Drew flinched, "I will."
Jay looked around the corner, "Bye, bud."
"Bye," Drew waved.
Hailey backed up, "See you in the morning."
Drew nodded and smiled slightly.
"I love you," Hailey said as she walked away.
"I love you too," Drew sighed and looked down.
"I thought you made reservations," Hailey breathed.
"I did," Jay rubbed his face.
"Then why did he say we didn't have any?" Hailey asked.
"I don't know," Jay glared at the hostess.
"Maybe give him money," Hailey opened her purse, "I have a couple twenties."
"No, we're not bribing him," Jay put a hand on hers.
"I want dinner before the show though," Hailey said.
"Fine," Jay said as he turned back to the hostess.
"Jake?" the hostess called out, "Is there a Jake H here? Last call."
Jay's eyes widened and he hurried over, "Me. That must be me."
"You just told me your name was Jay," the hostess raised his eyebrows.
"You must have misheard me on the phone," Jay said quickly, "My name is Jay Halstead."
"And this reservation is for a Jake H," the hostess said, "I'm sorry, sir, maybe you can try another night."
Jay groaned, "You have got to be kidding me. Listen, I'm a Chicago cop – detective actually – and my wife and I really would like a night out without our son because we are constantly putting our lives in danger – she's a detective too, we're in the Intelligence unit – and we really deserve a nice night with steak and wine – you know, we really don't like wine all that much, but it's a sign of being fancy and we need to be fancy people tonight – so please, dude, give me the reservation for Jake."
The hostess blinked and took a second before saying, "I'm sorry, sir, this 5 o'clock reservation is for a Jake H; I cannot give it to you."
Jay looked back at Hailey, "I…" His hand twitched toward his waist and groaned.
"Okay, we're done," Hailey jerked forward and grabbed Jay's wrist.
"I can do this," Jay hissed.
"You reached for your gun," Hailey breathed and pulled him away.
"I'm obviously not carrying it, so why does it matter?" Jay asked, "And I actually wanted to show my badge and prove who I am."
"Showing a badge is only going to prove that you're a detective, not that you're Jake H," Hailey smirked.
Jay couldn't help but laugh and run a hand through his hair. "I wanted this to be a perfect night," he groaned.
"I know, but we can still have a perfect night without steak and wine," Hailey shrugged, "It's okay. The show starts in two hours, that's more than enough time to find some food and eat before we go."
Jay squeezed her hand and took a deep breath, "You're right." He looked down the street, "How do you feel about tacos?"
"That's way too burnt," Drew said.
Will looked down at him, "Then I'll eat this one."
"You're going to eat black food?" Drew asked.
"I don't mind and I don't think it's burnt," Will shrugged.
"Okay," Drew sighed and went back to his puzzle.
"Why don't you have confidence in me?" Will chuckled.
"I want Mom to make me grilled cheese," Drew mumbled.
Will bit his lip, "I'm sorry, bud."
"Dad burns it like you, but Mom's good at making sure the bread's golden brown," Drew continued.
Will put the grilled cheese on a plate and started cooking another one, "I will try my hardest to make this one golden brown."
Drew nodded, "Thank you."
Will glanced back at him and smiled slightly as Drew easily pieced the puzzle together. He spotted the Google Home on the counter and connected his phone to it. The music started instantly and Drew jumped in his seat.
Will started singing along with the music and danced toward Drew, "Let's hear it, bud, sing with me!"
Drew laughed, "I can't sing. I don't know the words."
"Then dance with me," Will smiled, "Get up and dance."
"But how?" Drew slowly stood.
"Like this," Will showed Drew and chuckled as he started copying him, "That's it! Feel the music, little man."
"You have a little something," Hailey laughed and pointed to the side of her mouth.
"Hmm?" Jay tried licking where she had pointed.
"No," Hailey laughed harder and leaned forward to wipe her thumb over Jay's lips, "There," she wiped her thumb on a napkin.
"You're the best," Jay chuckled.
Hailey winked and finished her taco, "This was delicious," she took a sip of her beer.
"Might have been the best taco I've ever had," Jay nodded.
"Oh, now that's a big claim," Hailey smiled.
"It was worth it," Jay took Hailey's trash and threw it out with his own.
"Before we go, make sure to finish your beer," Hailey held out his bottle.
"Like I'd leave without finishing my beer," Jay rolled his eyes and drank from it.
Hailey laughed, "Just saying."
"Just saying," Jay mocked her softly and stood in front of her, "Spread your legs, let me get closer to you."
"I'm wearing a dress," Hailey smirked.
"Even hotter," Jay whispered.
Hailey shook her head and uncrossed her legs, "Happy?"
Jay stepped between her legs and bent down to kiss her, "Very."
Hailey set a hand on the back of his neck and pulled him closer, "Come here, Jake Halstead."
Jay laughed against her lips, "You suck."
"We were so close," Hailey said and pulled away.
"You need to make reservations from now on," Jay sat next to her on the bench, "That was ridiculous."
Hailey shrugged, "I think this was worth it," she tapped her beer against Jay's.
He smiled, "Me too."
Hailey's phone beeped and she sighed, "I need to turn this on silent before we go to the show."
"We have a little bit," Jay shrugged and drank his beer.
"Crap," Hailey breathed.
"What?" Jay looked over her shoulder.
"The show's sold out," Hailey said.
"What are you talking about?" Jay asked, "You said you could get tickets."
"I said that we should be able to get tickets day of," Hailey groaned, "I'm sorry."
"And they're sold out?" Jay took her phone and looked at the notification.
"Yeah," Hailey sighed, "I didn't think we'd have to get there super early."
"You know what?" Jay asked.
Hailey shrugged and took her phone back.
"Who cares?" Jay said, "Who gives two craps that we can't go see a show tonight? Hailey, we just ate tacos from a food truck while sitting on the side of the street, I think we're past seeing a show."
"I guess," Hailey looked down at the ground.
"We're not going home," Jay added, "Chin up, Halstead."
Hailey smiled a little, "What are we going to do?"
"Want to see if there's a ferry driving around Navy Pier?" Jay asked.
Hailey's smile grew and she nodded, "I'd really like that."
"Then let's go," Jay stood and put his hand out.
Hailey took his hand and stood, "Let's."
Will came in the living room, "Is this one of those zoo shows?"
Drew nodded without looking away from the TV.
"Cool," Will sat next to him on the couch, "Your parents said you need to be in bed by 8:30pm."
"I know," Drew whispered.
"Sweet," Will leaned back and put his feet up on the coffee table.
"I have time, right?" Drew asked, glancing at Will.
Will looked at his phone and nodded, "Yeah, you should probably shower and put your pajamas on in like half an hour, then you'll have enough time to brush your teeth."
"Okay, that's one episode," Drew said and turned the volume up.
Will chuckled and shook his head. He tried paying attention to the TV, but quickly found himself scrolling through his phone.
On screen, the zoologist talked about a lioness adopting another cub into her den even though she didn't give birth to it. She mentioned that sometimes things don't work out, but that this mom and cubs seemed to easily take to the new baby.
"My mom and dad are going to adopt another baby," Drew said softly.
Will looked up, "What?"
Drew turned the TV down, "Mom and Dad said they found a pregnant girl that needs to give her baby away. They said she's in trouble, so they're going to take her baby."
"I did not know that," Will said quietly.
"They're not replacing me," Drew stared at the TV.
"They could never replace you," Will nodded.
Drew shrugged.
"What's that for?" Will asked.
"What?" Drew looked at him.
"Why the sad face? Your parents aren't going to replace you," Will repeated.
"Sometimes I do bad things," Drew explained, "I scratched myself in school yesterday."
"Why'd you do that?" Will's eyes flickered to Drew's arms.
"The stupid music teacher said I needed to stay in the room, but it was too loud for me," Drew said quietly, "Mom wasn't happy I ran away and Dad didn't like that I scratched."
Will bit his lip, not knowing whose side to take.
Drew winced as he remembered the day before, "There were too many bells and drums," his hands twitched and he quickly turned to the small basket Hailey had put together on the side table to look for his extra stress ball. He found it and squeezed it tightly.
"That must have been hard," Will finally said.
"It was," Drew mumbled.
The TV show ended and started transitioning into the next episode.
Drew sighed and picked up the remote.
"Leave it on," Will stuck his hand out, "You can watch another episode."
"But I need to shower," Drew said.
Will shrugged, "Seems like you've had a rough couple days, you can stay up an extra half hour tonight."
Drew chewed his lip, "I don't know. Rules are important."
"If you want to go shower, then that's totally fine; I don't mind, but I'm just offering this to you," Will said.
"I think I should shower," Drew stood and turned off the TV.
"Okay," Will nodded, "Not a problem."
Drew started walking upstairs, then turned around, "What're you doing?"
Will held up his phone, "Just gonna wait down here, maybe play a game or two."
"Dad always waits in the hallway for me," Drew said, "What if I fall in the shower?"
"Okay," Will stood, "I can wait up there for you."
"Thanks," Drew smiled and hurried upstairs.
"The city's amazing at night," Hailey whispered.
Jay squeezed her from behind and nodded, "It is," he rested his chin on the top of her head.
There weren't many people on the night ferry, but that was perfectly fine because they had the top deck all to themselves.
Hailey reached up and set a hand on the side of Jay's face, "This show is much better than whatever we would have seen."
"That's subjective," Jay chuckled, "I think some theater critics would disagree with you."
"Well, they don't have a hot man up against them as they watch the city lights," Hailey said.
Jay laughed and kissed the back of her neck, "You are something else."
"I just like being with you tonight," Hailey smiled.
Jay looked around, "Do you think we're alone?"
"Um," Hailey glanced toward the stairs, "Enough, why?"
Jay's hands slipped to the bottom of her dress and slightly pulled at it.
Hailey turned in his arms and raised her eyebrows, "Yes?"
"I'll be quick," Jay lightly kissed her throat, "We've never done this before."
Hailey closed her eyes and breathed, "Okay."
Will tried ignoring Drew's wavering lip, but it was getting hard when Drew sniffled. "Bud," he said softly and sat back down on the bed, "It's okay."
"What if they don't come home?" Drew asked.
"They're going to come home," Will shook his head, "You have nothing to worry about."
"I'm starting to worry though," Drew said, "What if they get kidnapped?"
"Your parents are detectives, they won't get kidnapped," Will lightly squeezed Drew's hand. He knew what he said was pretty much a lie, but Drew didn't need to know that.
"I guess," Drew sniffled and wiped his eyes.
"Still sick?" Will asked.
Drew nodded, "It's sort of going away."
"Oh," Will quickly stood, "Your mom said she has nighttime medicine for you."
"No, it's so gross," Drew stuck his tongue out.
"I know, but it'll help you sleep which means you'll be able to stop worrying," Will rubbed Drew's arm and walked out of the room.
"I think this is our only original plan that actually happened," Hailey smiled and licked her ice cream.
Jay chuckled, "That's the truth."
Hailey looked out at the water and slowly ate her ice cream, "Do you think Drew went to sleep easily?"
"Probably, he likes Will," Jay said and licked his own cone.
"We lucked out on that one," Hailey smiled.
"Don't tell Will that, he won't shut up for days," Jay laughed.
"You love him," Hailey lightly shoved him.
"I do, I do," Jay chuckled.
"I hope Drew and the baby get along," Hailey said softly.
"I think they will," Jay nodded.
"There will be seven years between them," Hailey shook her head, "Wow."
"Eight," Jay corrected, "Drew turns eight in November, remember?"
"Gosh," Hailey breathed, "Yeah."
"Let's do something cool for his birthday," Jay smiled, "Maybe he'd like Lego Land."
Hailey laughed, "Jay, we have a couple months to plan. I also think Lego Land will have too many germs for him."
"Fun sucker," Jay chuckled.
Hailey rolled her eyes, "Just telling the truth."
"I want him to have a good first birthday with us though," Jay said.
"And there's nothing wrong with that, but it's kinda stressing me out," Hailey shrugged, "We're going to have a lot going on in November."
Jay reached over and squeezed her hand, "It'll all work out."
Hailey smiled slightly, "I know."
Jay rubbed his thumb over her fingers, "We can do this."
Hailey nodded and took a deep breath, "Our Christmas card's going to look pretty different this year."
Jay laughed, "Now that's a jump!"
"Maybe we can actually have a Christmas card," Hailey said excitedly, "We've never done that. You know those cards with pictures on them?"
Jay nodded and chuckled, "I do. Those family cards."
"We can have that now," Hailey smiled, "Yes, this is going to be so good. I sorta want us to wear matching outfits."
"You're starting to go overboard," Jay smirked and finished his ice cream.
"I don't care, I'm finally going to get a Christmas card," Hailey squeezed Jay's hand, "We haven't sent pictures of ourselves out since our wedding announcements."
"Wedding announcements or marriage announcements?" Jay laughed.
"What's it matter?" Hailey shrugged, "I loved our shotgun wedding," she laughed and winked.
"It was perfect," Jay smiled.
Hailey finished her ice cream and wiped her mouth, "Should we go home?"
Jay sighed and stood, "Probably," he glanced at his phone, "I really hope Drew's sleeping."
Will yawned and looked toward the front door as it was slowly pushed open.
"You awake?" Jay whispered.
"Barely," Will stood and stretched.
"Is he asleep?" Hailey asked and slipped her coat off.
Will nodded, "He should be."
"Thank you," Hailey took her heels off and carried them upstairs.
"Hey, here," Jay held out a gift card.
Will raised his eyebrows, "You don't have to pay me for babysitting my nephew."
Jay chuckled, "It's a thank you."
"Whatever, I won't complain," Will smirked and took the gift card, "Thanks."
Jay nodded, "How'd it go?"
"Taught him out to dance," Will smiled.
"Ah, that's gotta be interesting," Jay laughed.
"I'm a good dancer," Will chuckled and slipped his shoes on.
"Sure," Jay said.
Will shook his head, "Oh, he said you're adopting another baby."
"Yeah," Jay leaned against the wall, "We met a girl during a case and she's six months pregnant. It's not going to be easy, but it's what we want."
Will nodded and lightly hit Jay's arm, "We'll talk more over drinks?"
"Of course," Jay held the door open, "Thanks again for coming."
"Anytime," Will smiled and left.
Jay put his coat in the closet and walked up to Drew's room. Hailey was kneeling next to the bed and lightly running her fingers through Drew's hair.
"Is he asleep?" Jay whispered.
Hailey looked over and nodded, "Yeah, he is. He's not really snoring, so I'm guessing Will gave him some Nyquil."
Jay nodded and walked over. He bent down and kissed the top of Drew's head, "Night, buddy."
"We love you," Hailey whispered and stood.
Jay put a hand on her waist and led her out of the room, "Thanks for coming on a date with me tonight."
Hailey laughed softly, "Thank you for asking me out."
