Quinn had met up with her Mother once a week since Justin's funeral. They were into the summer now. Cami was off from school and Quinn would be starting law school in the fall. Mouse had been living with her for a while. Things were going in a good direction. She really felt like she had found her place. Judy had really surprised her with the progress she had made. She hadn't let herself believe it too much at the start, but she was becoming the Mother she had those few fond memories of.
"I'm really proud of you" Judy told her "You have really made something of yourself"
"I had help" She said clasping her take away coffee cup "I don't know what I would have done without Aunt Camille and Hank"
"I owe him a lot" Judy nodded "I have a lot of regrets"
"It's about looking forward" She said taking her hand "That's what your counselor said right?"
"I just wish I had done this sooner" Judy sighed.
"You're doing it now" She said "And I'm really proud of you, you're out on your own and I know that's a big deal for you"
If someone had asked Quinn a few months ago if she would be sat having a heart to heart with her Mother, she would have called them crazy. Judy had really put in the work. She had been a victim of Quinn's Father too. It didn't excuse her actions, but she was really trying.
They were sat at the park watching Cami play with some kids she had just met.
"How is Greg?" Judy asked smiling fondly.
Quinn had been surprised with how much her Mother had gotten along with Mouse. Judy would never call him Mouse and she thought it was a ridiculous nickname. He had enjoyed hearing the many many stories about her childhood that he had not heard yet.
"He's great" She replied her face lighting up "busy at work now that Hank's back"
"Well Hank doesn't hold back" Judy said.
"I know" She sighed "I'm worried about him and Erin"
"You don't need to worry about Hank" Judy told her "He's tough like you"
"That's what worries me" She admitted "No one checks in on the strong one"
"He has you" Judy pointed out "And Erin, and me"
Olive had moved to Scottsdale to live with her sister. It had broken Hank, but he wouldn't admit to it. Quinn and Cami had been spending more time with him, but he would never admit that he was struggling.
When Quinn got home, she sent Cami to wash up before dinner. They were in the middle of a heatwave and all she wanted to do was jump in a cold shower. It was the last of her booked time off and she was a little sad she was going back to work the next day. Gabby had said she would take Cami on some of her days off. Louie loved her. And Cindy was a saint sent from heaven because she was taking Cami a few times a week. Apparently when you already had 5 kids at home one more didn't make any difference, but Quinn thought it was really just that Cindy was the nicest woman she had ever met. Cami always had fun with Annabelle.
She looked up as Greg walked through the front door looking a little agitated. She furrowed her brow and put down Cami's dinner ready for her.
"Are you ok?" She asked
"Fine" He nodded "Did you have a good time with your Mom?"
"Surprisingly yes" She said "Our dinner's almost ready"
"You didn't have to cook" He said putting his arms around her.
"Well, you were working all day" She shrugged "When I'm back at work tomorrow it can be your turn"
"Take out it is" He said with a small smile.
"I don't want to know what you used to live on" She said shaking her head.
After they had finished dinner Cami was packing a bag to take to Gabby's the next day.
"You know you're not staying there right?" She asked raising an eyebrow.
"But I wanted Louie to see my bear and some of my toys" Cami said as if it was obvious.
"Ok" she said putting her hands up "Take whatever you like"
Quinn walked back to the kitchen where Mouse was cleaning up. She was sure he had been washing the same dish for a good two minutes.
"You know if you just say whatever it is, you'll probably feel better" She said sitting down "You've had something on your mind for weeks now"
Mouse sighed putting the dish in the rack to dry. He had been putting off talking to Quinn because it was a conversation he really didn't want to have.
"I got a call from a Sargent I worked with" He said sitting down next to her and taking her hand "He's putting together a tactical unit over there and they need a comp specialist"
"You want to go back?" She asked her voice was barely audible and the look on her face was breaking his heart.
"Over there I've got stripes" He replied "I know who the bad guys are when I'm there, I can make a difference"
"It sounds like you've made up your mind" She said pulling her hand back.
"I've just been thinking about it" He said "I told Hank that I need my felony charge gone to re-enlist"
"That sounds like more than just thinking about it Greg" She said standing up "Am I the last person to know?"
"If you don't want me to leaveā¦" He started while trying to take her hand again.
"You know what" She said pulling back "This is just a lot to process, I need some time to think"
"Do you want me to go, tonight I mean I can stay with Jay?" He asked looking at the ground.
"No" She replied "I just need to not talk about this right now"
He watched as she walked into Cami's bedroom. He sighed and put his head in his hands. Being a soldier was who he was. He hadn't thought about it when he had gotten with Quinn and he was really happy with her. But once he had gotten than call it was all he could think about. It felt like it was his purpose in life. He knew how much he had struggled the last time, but he was better now. He knew he could handle it.
Quinn cornered Jay at work the next day in the locker room.
"Hey Quinn" He said surprised "Is everything ok, you look angry?"
"Did you know?" She asked with her hand on her hip.
"I'm talking him out of it" He said "I promise"
"I don't even know what the right thing to do is" She sighed sitting down on the bench "He's a grown man he knows what he wants and what he doesn't"
"Woah sorry" Adam said backing out of the room as Jay put a hand on Quinn's shoulder "I feel like I'm interrupting a moment"
"Don't be stupid" she sighed "I better get back to work"
"Everything's going to be fine" Jay reassured her.
