Judy had been like a robot on the run up to the funeral but now that it was over, she didn't know what to do with herself. It was the thing Quinn had been afraid of. She had been staying with her Mom to keep an eye on her. She knew Connor had his sister and Robin but Judy was alone.
Quinn knocked on the bedroom door and waited for an answer but didn't get one. She pushed the door open slightly.
"Mom I made some breakfast" She said.
"I'm not hungry" Judy replied.
"I know but you need to try and eat something" She said walking in and sitting down on the bed "Please Mom"
"I just don't know what to do without him" Judy said looking out of the window "I know everyone thought it was just about money, but I really loved him"
"I know you did" She said putting a hand on her arm.
"I spent so many years in an unhappy relationship" Judy sighed "Of course I got you and your sister which I wouldn't change but when I met him it was a new start for me, I just wish we'd had more time"
"Have you thought about visiting Fran and her family?" She suggested.
Quinn knew it couldn't be easy spending all day every day in a house that held so many memories. Quinn's sister lived in Florida with her accountant husband and their two children. Quinn had never really had a relationship with her sister, but she knew it might be good for Judy to go and get away for a while.
"I wouldn't impose" Judy said shaking her head.
"Mom she invited you" She pointed out "Can we please go downstairs and try and eat a little?"
Judy nodded and walked downstairs with Quinn. Quinn couldn't remember ever seeing her Mom walk about in Pajama's ever in her life. She had always been immaculately dressed at all times.
Judy drank the coffee in front of her and bit the corner off a piece of toast.
"I thought you moved in with your detective" Judy said as she placed the cup back down.
"Jay" She said raising an eyebrow "Yes I did"
"So, shouldn't you go back there?" Judy asked "You've been here for a week"
"I'm not going to leave you at a time like this" She replied shaking her head "Jay completely understands"
"He really loves you" Judy said softly "You shouldn't spend time apart"
"I love him too" She nodded "But I also love you"
"I'm sorry I didn't give him a real chance" Judy told her "You have to know how proud I am of you and I just want you to be happy, that's all I've ever wanted"
"I know Mom" She said taking her hand.
"You should marry him you know" Judy told her "You never know how much time you've got"
"I think that's a little early" she smiled shaking her head.
"You've always loved that boy" Judy said with a knowing smile "You think I didn't know it was him you were sneaking out to see that summer before your senior year"
"I didn't think you noticed" She admitted.
"I know I wasn't always there for you" Judy said "Even this year I didn't support you, but I did notice things, I've always been proud that you go your own way, I never could do that"
"You did" She told her "I know it wasn't easy for you to leave my Dad and then you did something for you"
"You know a vacation might not be a bad idea" Judy said with a small smile "On the condition you go back to the detect…Jay"
Quinn made it clear that she wasn't leaving until she saw Judy onto the plane. After dropping her at the airport the next day she dropped the car back home and went to Molly's because she knew Jay was going with her colleagues after work.
"There she is" Kelly called from the bar as she walked in the door.
Quinn raised an eyebrow and she walked over to say hello.
"You sound like you're having a good night" She said giving him a hug.
"We're just having a few drinks" He shrugged "What are you drinking?"
"I've got it" Jay said putting his hands on her waist.
Quinn smiled as she turned around putting her arms around his neck as he bent down to kiss her.
"I missed you" She said kissing him back.
"Get a room" Will said giving his brother a playful shove.
Quinn didn't know what to say to Will. She knew his wedding to Natalie had been called off. She felt bad that she hadn't really been there. She'd seen him at work but that hadn't felt like the best place to bring up a conversation like that.
"How is your Mom?" Jay asked as he ordered her a drink at the bar.
"Not great" She admitted "I'm hoping the trip away will do her some good"
"It'll just take some time" He said putting an arm around her "Have you heard from Connor?"
"He's at work tonight" She replied "I saw him a few days ago, he's doing as well as he can"
Quinn told Will and Kelly that she would talk to them both later as Jay led her over to the table where Adam, Kim and Kevin were sitting.
"I feel like I haven't seen you in forever" Kim told her.
"I know it's been a long time" She agreed "There's just been so much going on, between the move and my family"
"How is the house?" Kevin asked "You know I've got a buddy if you still need a contractor"
"We're good" Jay said shaking his head "I actually finished up a few days ago"
"You did?" She asked in surprise.
"Severide, Casey and Will helped" He admitted.
"So, did I" Adam added.
"Hardly" He scoffed "You painted one door"
"You're amazing you know that" She said leaning over to kiss him.
"I'm just glad you're coming home tonight" He said "It's been too long…"
"Other people at the table" Adam reminded them.
"Don't ruin the moment Adam" Kim said hitting him in the chest with the back of her hand.
"I'm not" Adam said holding his hands up "I think it's adorable that Halstead is all soft over a girl"
"And how long have you been single for now?" Quinn aside raising an eyebrow.
"You need your girl to stand up for you?" Adam asked
"I know better than to argue with her" He laughed putting an arm around her
It felt nice to be sat with Jay and friends. She got a chance to spend time with Kelly and Will and life just felt like it was going back to normal.
Going back to her home with Jay was the best part of her day. She took a look around fully when they got back, and he had really done an amazing job with everything.
"So how are you really?" He asked putting his arms around her as they stood on the back patio.
"I'm good really" She replied "My Mom really opened up, she told me she's proud of me, that she's happy for us"
"She approves of me?" He asked in surprise.
"I don't know how I would have got through the last few weeks without you" She told him "She just wants me to be loved and not waste any time"
"I know that must have meant a lot to you" He said kissing her.
"It did" she agreed "It's all just helped me realize even more that I want to spend my life with you"
"Are you talking about marriage?" He asked
"Yeah I think I'm proposing" She nodded in disbelief.
"This isn't how I planned it" He said shaking his head as he reached into his pocket "But I've been carrying this around for a while"
"Yes" She said as he opened the box with a beautiful diamond ring.
"You're not going to let me do this properly?" He laughed.
"We want to be together it seems pretty perfect to me" She grinned throwing her arms around him.
