Dabi glanced down.
Kagome was calling him?
He blinked once then twice before answering.
"This is unusual," He greeted her casually. "Don't tell me you called just to say you regret last night. I'm not apologizing for that even if you do get mad."
The faint sound of her laughter came through on the other end of the line.
It was nice.
Definitely much better than the mopey attitude she'd had when he first arrived at the shrine.
"I wasn't going to say I regretted it. Although it's nice to hear you say that you don't either." The young woman's voice was soft as she spoke. "I called you just because I felt like hearing you talk. I snuck away to the roof for lunch and just felt like listening to you. Is that weird?"
He felt his lips curl into a smirk, "Depends on what you wanna hear."
Dabi couldn't help himself. Whenever the chance to tease her presented itself, he had to take it. There was something charming in the way she'd fluster and get upset at him. Her cheeks would flush, her eyes would narrow and he could see her planting her hands firmly on her hips. As children, he'd just thought it was cute.
Now though, he had a few other notions in regards to the face she'd make at him.
"Hey now, nothing too explicit. I'm still at school." Kagome laughed on the other end of the line. "Besides I think I'm supposed to be joining Class 1-A this afternoon at the USJ. Aizawa mentioned that he wanted me to guide them a little more in their rescue training."
He snorted at that, "Oh so now he wants you more involved. Besides, shouldn't he be more focused on rounding out your education first?"
He still didn't like that man.
Kagome had mentioned a few times before that her relationship with her teacher had become less strained in the weeks they'd been training. Dabi supposed that, that was partially due to the fact that he was no longer viewing her as some weak, ambitionless nobody dragging along in the class. She was becoming strong.
Of course little of that had to do with Aizawa himself.
It was Kagome who'd sparked this change within herself. All either of them did was give her the tools she needed to become stronger.
It was her own drive that enabled her to go so far, so quickly.
"Careful now, that almost sounds like you care." She teased him just as easily.
Dabi snorted.
Of course he did, however he wouldn't speak it out loud. At least not yet. Not while there were still other things he needed to get sorted.
Namely where to go from here.
The young woman continued, "In any case I get the feeling that I need to be there. Can't exactly say why but I've just got this nagging suspicion that I'll be needed today."
His lips dipped at the thought.
There was one thing he learned about Kagome through their youth together. Whenever she had a feeling about something, it inevitably came to pass.
Her instincts were nothing to sniff at. In fact, if he had to guess, he'd say that the years of fending off attacks had made them even sharper than the were before. Perhaps the only reason she survived until he arrived earlier this month was because she'd sensed something was off.
His fingers flexed at the thought.
"I'm on my way."
Kagome sighed, "You can't." He could practically hear the disappointment in her tone. "Even if you tried the gates would slam shut in your face. I don't know what's going on exactly but I know that it won't be easy for you to get in. Just hang tight. I'll keep you updated as we go." She gave a faint laugh, "Who knows, maybe I'm just being paranoid over nothing."
Dabi didn't respond to that.
No. That wasn't it at all.
Something was wrong.
The man paused as a siren wailed loudly from the other end of the line.
His back stiffened as his eyes thinned dangerously, "What's going on?"
Kagome fell silent. Then after a moment's hesitation, she spoke.
"I think someone snuck onto the campus."
Dabi clenched his teeth at the thought.
It looked like she was right after all.
