Chapter 44: Fighting Into Labor

Derek's Point-of-View

My mother was a patient woman, especially when showing up unannounced. However, she was no fool. Making up excuses of having a day full of surgery with not even a moment to sit down to lunch with her was out of the question, she'd popped out two doctors and the woman, god bless her soul, knew how to read an OR board.

I got a short break from her when I was done with the work day, and she went to take her things to a nearby hotel. I told her that she was welcome to stay with us, but she said it was up to Meredith and that she didn't want to make her feel uncomfortable. Oh yes, Meredith… speaking of my wife… I pulled in the driveway as she was getting out of her car. She sighed with exhaustion; her eyes were still irritated, but she had little fight in her.

"Hey." She groaned.

"Hi." I smiled as I planted a kiss on her lips, she opened her mouth to say something, but I covered it with my hand "Before you say anything, I don't care if we have a girl. Sure, I won't lie, I want a boy. After being raised in a house of pink I would like a little blue, but if it's a girl, I'd be thrilled."

"Really?" she smiled, eyes lighting up and all. She wanted a girl.

"Really." I chuckled as I kissed her cheek "Oh, and Mom loves you."

"Really." She muttered in a dry tone "I gave her a good reason not to."

"She was pregnant before, she knows how pregnant women are."

She nodded and let out a short sigh of relief, at that same time we heard a lot of shouting coming from the house and both looked up with frowns on our faces.

"Wonder what's going on in there?" I frowned, she did too and then I heard a soft gasp of realization.

"Oh… we better go in there."

I didn't have time to ask why, before she was heading up the front steps and of course, I was on her heels. We walked in to see Cristina and Jackson in the living room screaming at each other. Jackson looked to be more on the defending end as Cristina unleashed her fury on him. Not to mention she looked like shit.

"What do you mean you didn't know it could happen!" she shouted "You're a fucking doctor! They gave you a medical degree and you can't even remember reproductive 101!"

"It slipped my mind ok!" he shot back "I was thinking about other things at the time."

"Well you can forget about thinking about them ever again you ignorant asshole!"

"What!" he looked terrified.

"What is going on?" I mumbled to Meredith who was watching the argument as well.

"Oh, Cristina's pregnant. And Jackson apparently is at fault."

"Cristina's pregnant!" I shouted, suddenly the room went silent and all eyes were on me as my blood began to boil "You bastard!" I shouted as I lounged for Jackson. I knew Cristina was no virgin, but I still didn't want to see evidence that some flaky horny boy had his dick in what I considered to be my baby sister…I heard a scream as I grabbed Jackson's collar and shoved him across the room. He swings his fist in defense, but I ducked...what could I say, I had fairly good reflexes.

"Derek!" Cristina screamed "Stop it! He's the father of my child don't kill him!"

"I'm not going to kill him." I muttered as I swung at Jackson, apparently, he had good reflexes too "I'm going to fucking murder him!"

"Stop it right now, Derek!" Meredith hissed behind me "For Christ's sake you're not 14 years old anymore!"

"I can't believe you knocked up my sister!" I growled at Jackson.

"She's a big girl." Jackson swung back "She's not your sister."

I growled again, and I rammed myself into Jackson, shoving him into the wall behind us, I heard him groan in pain as I pulled myself back enough to swing at him. We both stumbled away from the wall and pulled our fists back to pummel each other when I heard a loud shriek.

"Stop it!" she said from on top of the coffee table "For god sakes you two are grown men… we're growing human beings that YOU two immature losers HELPED us create! Stop acting like barbarians and start acting like someone our children can look up to someday!"

We both looked up to see Meredith glaring at us with red in her face. I think we both felt the anger drain from us as the door opened.

"What is going on in here?" my mother asked as she surveyed the room.

"Damn it!" Meredith muttered as she stepped off the coffee table, she gasped and her legs buckled, I quickly reached to catch her as Jackson's arms went for her as well.

"Mer!" Jackson asked desperately "Mer, are you ok?"

"Meredith." I panicked "What's wrong?"

"Owe." She whimpered as she clutched her stomach "You sons of bitches put me in labor, I'm going to KILL you both!" She looked down and gasped, of course I automatically did so too and my eyes didn't want to recollect what I was seeing… a puddle of bright red blood was forming at her feet.

No matter how pissed I was at Jackson at the moment, no matter that my mother who lived 3000 miles away had just walked in the door, or that my 'baby sister' was crying on the couch… nothing mattered in that moment.

The only thing that did matter was that Meredith, the love of my life was in pain.. and that our baby that I'd taken for granted might not make it through the night.
