Day 33: Space

It started with a simple question: "Rose, why is your owl named Mr. Spock?"

Rose laughed, "Mr. Spock is a character on an old tv show that my Grandpa Granger loves. We used to watch it together all the time when I was little."

"Rose is obsessed with it," Albus chipped in helpfully.

Scorpius looked blank, "What's a tv show?"

"It's like a story you watch on this electronic box with moving pictures," Albus offered.

The pureblood only looked more confused than ever, "I thought you guys said Muggles didn't have moving pictures?"

Rose shook her head, laughing a little, "It's kind of hard to explain. I'll tell you what, come over to my house sometime this summer and we'll show you." Her eyes lit with enthusiasm, "We can watch Star Trek. That's the show my owl is named after."

Scorpius may have forgotten the conversation soon after it happened, but Rose didn't. And that was how, one warm summer day, Scorpius Malfoy ended up crammed on a couch with his two best friends and Rose's little brother Hugo, who had ignored the rooms two armchairs in favor of sitting with the older kids, watching a bunch of Muggles in colored uniforms explore the depths of space.

By the time they paused the show to eat dinner with Rose's parents, Scorpius was not only quoting the opening lines along with the two Weasley kids, but he and Rose had a spirited discussion over dinner about whether the Statute of Secrecy would still exist in the world and time of the Federation and the likelihood of other planets having their own wizarding populations.

After dinner, Rose and Albus, along with Rose's parents, watched Hugo and Scorpius play a game of wizard chess. Scorpius had always thought himself quite good at the game, and was slightly put out when he was beaten by a ten year old, for Hugo had inherited his father's skill at chess.

As the chess game was finishing, Albus' parents arrived to pick up their son and Scorpius, who was staying with the Potters for the week, but the kids wheedled an agreement that they could stay for one last Star Trek episode out of their parents, who headed off to the kitchen to chat while the kids watched.

"We can watch more tomorrow," Rose told Scorpius happily as he headed for the door with the Potters after the episode's end, sensing that her friend might just become as big a fan as she herself was.

"Oh no you don't," Albus interrupted before Scorpius could answer, a grin of his own lighting his face, "We watched your thing all day today. Now it's my turn to pick. Tomorrow, we're watching Star Wars."

As a Trekkie myself, I really couldn't resist with a word like space. I regret nothing.
