{Jace's POV}
We had landed in what seemed to be a massive field.
I noticed lights coming from a building in the distance.
I pointed them out to my father, and we began to run.
Our sure-footed runes and runes of silence concealing us into the early dawn.
Once we had started to get closer we realised that the lights were witchlight and were coming from a courtyard looking place.
Even though we were a good 200 meters away from the light a penetrating scream.
We all looked at each other in startlement.
But something about the scream was familiar to me.
Then my eyes widened.
Clary.
I surged forward towards the light, leaving everyone else no choice but to follow me.
I was about to burst into the circle of light surrounded by shadowhunters.
But I felt a strong hand tug me back, my father.
"Jace, wait. We need to find out what we are getting ourselves into, first."
The logic in his words spoke to me but with every heartbeat I could only think of Clary.
The others had caught up to us by now and we were poised behind a couple statues close together.
I could just see through the group of Shadowhunters and saw what was in the clearing.
My blood went cold.
It was Clary.
She was, she was screaming.
And then I saw why, the whip cracked across her back.
All the blood running down her back froze me.
I had never seen so much blood.
I took a ragged step forwards, but I felt Alec's arms restraining me.
I wanted to scream at him, every second I was standing here. Was another second the Clary was in agony.
I heard it again, the snap of the whip across her back. Followed by a terrifying cry of torture.
It sent another jolt through my body.
"Jace, Jace please stop. We don't understand, we have to wait."
Alec's calming voice whispered into my ear.
"Alec, Alec look at her. She needs our help not an execution"
I saw his eyes flicker, maybe he was starting to see reason.
The fracturing sound of the whip had stopped, I looked again to see Clary.
She had turned around to face a man, but I couldn't tell who he was.
I could tell she was trying to play the tough act, but as she stood she collapsed back down to the ground.
I saw her face crumple as she hit the floor. Hard.
Alec's arms tensed around my shoulders once again.
I looked at my father - but he looked as confused as the others.
Clary then started backing away from the man. Scraping her heels on the floor, but she was chained down. There was nothing she could do.
The man then inserted a needle into her neck and injected a dull green liquid into her.
Everything went silent at first.
If Clary had been in pain before this must have been torment.
Her body spasmed and contracted, all of her muscles tensing.
Her eyes went black, but they didn't look like they had before. They weren't threatening or angry, they looked fearful, an abyss of pain enveloped her.
I couldn't stand it anymore, I had to make it stop.
I kicked Alec behind me so he released his grip on me, this cause everything to go quiet.
The shadowhunters who were surrounding Clary had now turned their attention to us.
But it wasn't them that caught my attention, her eyes met mine. They were a vibrant green once again, but these eyes didn't belong to the warrior I had seen. These were the eyes to her soul; pain, loss, agony bursting through them.
"Ah, the Clave"
Came the voice of a man who was torturing Clary, I had never longed for anything as much as I wanted to strangle him there and then.
"Valentine"
My father hissed at the man.
The man whom my father addressed was about 6 feet tall at least, he was built strongly.
He seemed to definitely live up to the name Valentine Morgenstern.
I almost felt intimidated by him, I then thought of how Clary had managed to survive a lifetime with him.
I glanced over at Clary and saw her eyes roll back into her head.
SHIT.
I started to run over to where she was, but the man swiftly moved into my path.
"I won't let you touch Clarissa."
His commanding voice sent a wave of rage through me.
"Like how you have been treating her?"
I retorted, hearing gasps behind me.
It must have been unusual for someone to defy him.
"Watch your mouth boy!"
I felt an arrow fizz over my shoulder and barely miss Valentine's face.
I smirked, Alec.
I used the distraction to duck by him and sprinted over to Clary.
{Alec's POV}
Once I had released the arrow from the bow I saw all eyes turn to me.
I had given Jace enough time to bolt over to Clary.
"Ah Parabatai, charming"
He spat out the last bit and made his way over to where I stood.
I had always been tall so we were on the same eye-level.
As he lifted his blade I felt myself be knocked out of the way and saw my father begin to face off Valentine.
Smiling as my dad fought the most dangerous man alive - well maybe second now that we knew about Clary - but I felt proud nonetheless.
I saw my mother spring into action alongside Stephen, they were fighting off 3 circle members.
I saw some fleeing circle members try to run, I took my stance and began shooting.
They were not going to run away again.
{Celine's POV}
I saw a woman sitting near where Clarissa was, something about this woman was familiar.
I jogged over to her and then stopped dead in my tracks,
"Amatis?"
I hissed, this was Luke's sister.
"Celine? What are you all doing here?"
Amatis had obviously been crying, I noticed there was blood dripping down off her back and staining the floor below her.
"We can catch up later. You're hurt, tell me what happened!"
I commanded.
Amatis looked up at me and shook her head slowly,
"Not me."
She spoke, nodded her head to where Clarissa lay.
"Her"
{Jace's POV}
The second I reached Clary I winced.
There was blood everywhere.
I put my hand under her back to see if I could sit her up.
But in doing so, she lurched forward and cried out.
Holding her up just a little longer I sat down and allowed her to lay gently in my lap.
What have they done to you?
I drew an amisso rune on her upper arm, it seemed to be working.
I then tried drawing an iratze - but it vanished immediately.
I drew another and the same thing happened, it was as if she was so damaged that the iratze was used up straight away.
I looked down at her face and saw scars splattered everywhere, what had this girl endured?
Looking down at her stomach I had only just realised that she was just in a training bra, like the ones Isabelle wore.
But instead of looking vulnerable it made her look defiant, more marks from a lifetime of fighting covered her - it made Clary look powerful.
I could feel my gear becoming more and more damp as Clary's back bled onto me.
I didn't know what to do, I had never felt so useless.
Glancing down to her face I saw her eyes begin to flutter open.
"Clary?"
I spoke gently.
When she looked up to me everything else seemed to fade away.
"You came?"
I could see her eyes glass over, from the pain I was not sure.
"Of course. Clary what did he do to you?"
My voice broke at the end,
"Nothing I can't handle"
But her face creased as she spoke.
"Clary what can I do?"
She just looked at me with shining eyes and shook her head,
"There's nothing you can do. The whip was carved with runes of demonic origins, the angels runes will not help."
I felt a wave of nausea as the memory of Clary's scream filled my head.
"Clary what did he inject you with?"
I had to know, no matter how awful it was to hear,
"Wolfsbane mixed with silver. Trial 2."
"Trial 2?"
I repeated back to her,
"The whip was the punishment of the fair folk, the injection was trial 2 - the punishment of the children of the moon."
I shut my eyes, trying to shut out all of the rage that was consuming my thoughts.
How could anyone inflict this on anyone else.
"How much?"
"How much what?"
Clary replied feebly.
"How much did he inject you with?"
She looked away at first and then responded,
"Enough to kill a pack"
My eyes widened,
"I'm going to kill that son of a bitch"
I saw Clary tense at my sudden words,
"Sorry Clary"
As much as I hated her father, she was still his daughter and she would forever feel a connection to him.
We don't get the luxury of choosing our family.
I hope you guys liked it!
At the end of chapters I am going to begin a thing where I tell you one of my favourite songs.
And maybe you could give them a listen…
