You're cold and hot
You burn out like a match
Keep a slip knot and the strings you attach
You think it's easy, but that's a lie
The only reason that you're good at goodbye is
Every boy you ever met was too easy to forget
Well, I ain't going out like that

- Make You Miss Me, Sam Hunt.

He's different,

don't know how

he just is.

Alec runs his fingers through his hair, looking at me guiltily "I'm sorry, man. But she is going to walk all over you in high-heeled boots. She isn't one for permanent relationships and you clearly are."

I grin, "Are you trying to scare me off."

Jace, who was quietly observing speaks up "Is it working?"

Alec hits Jace, "Nah, just warning you."

"So don't come crying to us. We ain't your therapist." Jace snarks.

Alec smacks Jace and I laugh like what they said didn't bother me.

Even I could hear the determination in my voice, "I'm different."

If she leaves me, I'm going to make her miss me.

...

It was obvious that she is the type to do whatever and whoever she wants whenever she wants to. Not only because of the obvious signs of past boy toys in her social media but also by the way she lives. Her trunk is filled with "old" clothes that are in great condition, and are being given away because she already wore it more than 5 times. Or because the color wasn't her shade or because the texture was no longer on point.

There was a charm in it, how she throws herself into everything, and just as soon she is ready for a new fall. A new way to entertain herself. There was a bright glow that made you want to be around her,

That only made me more determined, when she tried to kiss me on the first date I instinctively ducked and kissed her cheek.

Being courteous was easy, she was an easy person to please. She smiled easily and her laugh while harder to earn was just as sweet. Everything about being with her was easy and rewarding.

She showed me the perks of being spontaneous and I showed her the value in dedication, in time. "Yeah!" I hollered "You got this-you're so close! Yeah!"

Izzy looked up at me, "Why are you cheering for the losing team? The Mets hardly ever get far."

I paused mid-scream and pondered her question. "I've always cheered for the Mets."

"But they hardly ever win." she argues

"That makes their victories so much sweeter." I argue back and continue screaming as my favorite player dashes to third base.

I glance at my phone; it hasn't stopped buzzing and I was in the middle of a very important meeting-but I check anyway.

It was Izzy.

I sent her one of the automatic messages,

"Can't talk, call you back soon."

She stopped calling after that.

As soon as pleasantries and every part of the meeting was over I dialed her number. "Hey."

"Are you going to break up with me?" Izzy demanded, ignoring my greeting.

"Do you really think I would dump someone over text?"

I can hear her annoyance, "I'm not asking if you are going to break up with me now, I'm asking if you have plans for future dumping me."

"I don't." I tell her.

"Oh." She seemed lost now, "Well, good."

"Why would you think I was going to dump you?" I ask as I make my way to the elevator. The conference room was too cold and now there was cold sweats around my hairline making me feel uncomfortable.

"You sent me an automatic cell response. And I haven't seen you in a while."

"Business trip, remember?" I remind her "And I was just at business meeting."

"Oh." Another pause. "Did I get you in trouble?"

I smile, "Nah, I'm a master at working my phone without looking. Besides it was on mute."

"Cool, so-I just called to say- I miss you." The words are out quickly, almost slurred.

But I heard it.

"Aw, I bet you say that to all the boys."

Her voice was quiet and distant one the phone "No, just you."

"Now, I'm blushing."

I listen for her giggle and then I say "I miss you too."

"Good."

Silence stretches across the phone line, I clear my throat "I'll be back in time for dinner tomorrow" I suggest "Thai, my treat."

I grin at her response "It's a date."

…..

Izzy walks back into the room and they look up expectantly.

"So, what's the verdict? He gonna dump you-OW!" Jace protest as Alec lands an elbow at his side.

"He isn't." Izzy grins radiantly,

"What did I tell you?" Clary demands "Simon wouldn't do that-"

"How do you know he isn't hooking up with some girl- OW!" This time it was Clary who hit him. Izzy looked frazzled, conflicted with insecurity and a sureness that Simon wasn't like that.

Her phone pinged and she checked it, A text from Simon.

It was a picture of him in a suit, looking exasperated and clearly exhausted. The caption read; The Elevator is playing the cheesiest music.

She smiles at the picture and starts when Clary cooed. She triumphantly gloated, "Told ya so!" (Izzy is groaning about being a chump as her phone gets passed around for inspection)

Jace checked out the photo then smiled, "Ya alright."

"You're really invested in this fling" Alec noted.

Izzy freezes and so does Clary.

"Fling?" Clary asks at the same time Izzy says "He's different."

Jace looks horrified but he takes out a 20 and hands it to Clary, Alec does the same.

(Izzy was too busy mentally planning her wardrobe for tomorrow's date to notice)
