The bucket containing the four teens neared the top, Steven and Tiffany reached it first and could be seen in a deep kiss to which Troy and Brittany whooped and hollered and made kissy sounds while cheering them on. Troy stood up and started shaking their bucket.
"If the buckets rockin' don't come knocking."
He shouted as Hermione clung to the railing for dear life. Brittany and Draco were laughing loudly and didn't seem to notice that they could plunge to their deaths at any second.
A man operating the ride shouted at them to stop and he finally did, much to her relief. Their bucket was at the top now and the wheel jolted to a stop. Hermione looked to Troy with a panicked look
"Don't worry sweetness, they are just unloading and reloading." He said putting his arm around her shoulder again.
She nodded feeling slightly reassured. Draco picked up Brittany's hand and spoke
"I'm not good at this and I have not had a lot of practice or experience, but I would like to know if you will be my girlfriend?" he said in a hopeful voice. Hermione's mouth hung open, she had not expected that and didn't know what to do or say.
Brittany blushed before wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing him deeply, which he looked to be enjoying. When she was done, she blurted out
"Yes, I would love to."
"Well all right. Way to steal the moment Drake." Troy said, looking at Hermione as if he was about to do the same but had been upstaged.
"Sorry." Draco said sheepishly, holding Brittany's hand firmly.
"Now this is our special place too." Brittany said as her thumb rubbed small circles on Draco's hand. Draco smiled feeling part of a close group now, a group of Muggles, sure, but he needed to get over that and Brittany showering him with attention was helping him forget why he even had a problem with it before. His smile was wide and he looked the happiest Hermione had ever seen.
They neared the ground and they were in the line to be let off next. When the man opened the door Steven and Tiffany were waiting for them, Brittany ran over to Tiffany, so excited, she could hardly get her good news out.
"Drake asked me to be his girlfriend at the top of the ride!" she stumbled and stuttered in one breath.
"Wow, that's great!" Tiffany replied.
"Nice, man!" Steven said clapping Draco on the back. "Congrats guys, what should we do next?"
The two girls thought for a moment but came up with nothing.
"What time is it?" Troy asked suddenly. Steven looked at his phone,
"Its nearly 11. Why?"
"Tonight's the first night for the summer spectacular fireworks and laser show at the beach boardwalk, we can just make it if we hurry." Troy said taking off away from the Ferris wheel, everyone followed him walking at a brisk pace that bordered a run. They came to a gate that exited the park facing the beach boardwalk. It was crowded but they found a clearing of sand. Troy took off his shirt and laid it on the ground for Hermione to sit on. Two other shirts followed and soon Hermione was sitting on Troy's shirt and leaning back onto his bare chest, his chin rested on the top of her head. People were walking around selling popcorn and drinks.
"Would you like something to drink?" Troy asked.
"Just some water please. Hermione answered.
"Anyone else?" He asked the others.
"Diet Coke." Brittany chimed in.
"Me too." Said Tiffany.
"I'll go with you." Draco said standing up, Steven joined them as they headed towards a man carrying a large tray of drinks. A few moments later they returned carrying drinks and popcorn and a clear plastic bag containing pink fluff that Hermione recognized as candy floss which she doubted her parents would approve of. He resumed his position sitting behind her and she leaned into him. Loud music started to play, and Troy leaned close to her ear,
"Its about to start sweetness."
Just then a loud whistling noise streaked through the air and exploded in a green and gold burst above the ocean, the reflection lighting up the water, then a blue one exploded high above them. It was a dark clear night with hardly any moon, creating the perfect canvas for the fireworks, but then the laser show started, shooting beams of light into the sky in time with the rhythm of the music. Lots of people, including Brittany and Tiffany got up and started dancing, Brittany pulled Draco in to a standing position and started grinding against him, he wrapped his arms around her waist and rocked to her body. Troy watched them for a moment before whispering
"Can I have this dance?"
"I don't really know how…" she stuttered out
"Let me show you." He cooed pulling her to her feet. She had kicked off her flip flops so her bare feet dug into the sand, which was soft and dry. He got behind her and put his arms around her waist like Draco had done. He helped her move and soon she was getting the hang of it and was out of breath. She was the first to flop down onto her date's shirt and gulp half of the bottle of water Troy had brought her. The other girls followed her lead and plopped down exhausted.
They sat quietly and watched the rest of the show and at the end everyone held up their glow in the dark object they had purchased earlier.
"Emily" Troy's honey soft voice resonated in her ear, his breath tickling her neck.
"Yes?" She said half turning to him.
"This is not how I wanted to do this but Drake kind of stole the moment earlier."
Her heart began to thump loudly and she knew what was coming next but was unsure of what to say.
"Will you be my girlfriend?" He nearly whispered. She was at a loss for what to say so she busied herself putting her flip flops back on and drinking the rest of her water.
"Here's the thing, I just got out of a relationship, and I was very hurt. I'm looking for someone who will put me first, not as a last resort." She told him looking into his lovely hazel eyes.
"Who could ever choose you last?" he asked rhetorically. "When I'm with a girl, she comes before everyone else. Ask anyone. Please give me a chance."
She looked down at the sand, now aware the rest of the group was watching them.
"Alright." She said with a smile, his face broke into a wide grin and he picked her up and spun her around, the other four clapped along with twenty or so bystanders. Hermione's face flushed beet red as Troy put her down and took her by the hand.
"We will need to rush to the parking lot if we are going to beat the traffic." Troy said grabbing his shirt and pulling it on before ushering the group back towards the gate.
"Do you have a curfew?" he asked. "I'd hate to get on your godmother's bad side this early on."
"I don't think so but Ill call Cissy and let her know that there is traffic and we might get caught in it." She replied before taking out her pink iPhone and dialing Cissy's number. Cissy didn't answer, Regina did.
"Cissy Sinclair's phone, Regina speaking."
"Regina, its Emily, there is traffic at the amusement park, tell Cissy we might get caught in it and we will be home as soon as possible."
"Will do Miss Emily." She replied before hanging up.
"Ok we are good if we get caught in traffic." She told him putting her phone back in her pocket.
"Ok." Troy said slowing the fast walk just a bit. When they got near the front gate a man approached them smiling widely
"Ahh, one couple comes in; three come out." He said knowingly looking at the three pairs of linked hands. "The park works its magic again. Let me take your picture so you can remember the moment in the future."
"Ok." Everyone agreed.
"Six copies?" asked the man hopefully.
"Yes." Draco replied handing the man his debit card "This should take care of it."
"Thanks man." Steven and Troy said simultaneously.
The group posed, couples holding hands in front of the lit neon sign at the front. The bright lights gave the picture a magical quality. And the man printed them out on a nearby photo printer handing each one a copy. And Draco his debit card and receipt as well. Each photo was in a campy cardboard frame with the parks name, year and several pictures of rides along the edge. They all took their photo and exited the park for Troy's car, Brittany was whispering something to Tiffany, who then whispered something to Steven. He nodded.
"Steven will sit in back with us," announced Brittany, "Tiffany agreed to sit in front with Troy and Emily."
Hermione nodded her agreement and they reached Troy's car faster than she remembered parking, Steven helped him put the top back down. The rest of them got in and fastened their seatbelts. When Troy and Steven got in, he started up the massive motor and put on a soft music radio station that could hardly be heard over the engine roar. As they pulled out of the space, he turned the radio up just a bit. One of Hermione's favorite songs was on and she settled in to hear 'Love song requiem' by Trading yesterday.
"Hey this song has your name in it Emily." Troy pointed out helpfully
"its one of my favorites."
"Its such a sad song though." Brittany mused.
"It could be our song." Troy said thoughtfully.
"No Brittany's right, its too sad for that."
Troy took the turn onto the highway and soon they were speeding through the darkness under a moonless night sky.
