A/N: Welcome back again! This is one of my favorite songs in general. My friends older brother used to listen to a LOT of Van Halen while he lived at home, so I heard it all of the time when I was a kid. So, this is the actual version not the Glee cover, although I do think the Glee version is a decent cover that's not the one I shuffled into. So, I don't feel the need to make this fit with the storyline presented in the show.
Song: Hot for Teacher: Van Halen
Lyrics: "I've got it bad, so bad. I'm hot for teacher."
Summary: Kurt didn't like working at the garage, but today was different. Today, he met a cute older guy that actually showed interest. Too bad he's only in Lima for a work-study this school year. Double bad that Kurt just waked into his first period class and there he was sitting at the teacher's desk.
Rating: T: No real warnings, maybe just some general language and a few suggestive comments. I do know that this idea has been done a number of times before so it not a completely original idea, but still fun nevertheless. I did make some changes to their ages, graduations, etc… so obvious AU. For my own squeamishness, we're assuming that Blaine is 20 and in his second year of college and is working as a student-teacher and Kurt is 18, repeating his senior year because of san incident the year prior. So, it's two adults.
Kurt Hummel was an enigma in Lima, Ohio. He wasn't popular by any stretch of the imagination, he dressed flamboyantly and he very proudly flew his rainbow flag. So, it was no surprise that in conservative and slightly homophobic Lima that he wouldn't have had a lot of practice at flirting. Okay, no practice at all. There weren't any other gay boys at McKinley (that he knew of) and his friends from the all-boys school, Dalton Academy, in Westerville were either straight or already had a boyfriend. Sue me Kurt thought as he tucked the small corner of paper into his pocket. He had been working at the garage the night before when it happened. A handsome guy had walked in looking absolutely disheveled and in need of some help with his stalled-out car. Kurt couldn't help but think the guy was super cute and in a sexy kind of dirty way almost.
Kurt's bad day at the shop had immediately turned upside down when the stranger introduced himself as Blaine. Not only was Blaine handsome he was also a little older than Kurt, 20 to be exact, and he was in the area for the school year for a work-study program. Kurt himself had turned 18 the year prior meaning he totally had a chance, and when Blaine had confidently said he was gay, well, Kurt had taken a leap of faith and asked for his number. That's why even though he was walking into McKinley for the first day of senior year and he knew he was going to get slushied he felt like he was on cloud 9. Nothing and Kurt meant absolutely NOTHING could ruin his good mood.
"Good morning class," Kurt heard the familiar voice as he took his seat in AP Lit and whipped around to the face the teacher as quickly as humanly possible. "My name is Mr. Anderson, but you guys can all call me Blaine. I'm a sophomore from OSU and an education major. I'll be leading some of the classes this semester as part of my work-study for my degree. Your teacher, Mrs. L, has decided I can lead this first class by myself. So, let's get our desks in a circle and start introducing ourselves!"
Okay, maybe nothing could ruin his day except for that. There was just simply absolutely no way that handsome, sexy, charming Blaine from the garage could be standing in front of him as his teacher.
"Well this just shows you how absolutely ridiculous my life is." Kurt picked at his lunch tray, not allowing himself to make eye contact with Mercedes.
The girl just snorted. "Kurt," she said. "Even if he IS your teacher here, you literally got hit on by a HOT college guy here in Lima! That's insane. Remember, you just turned 18, once he gets through this semester you never know where things could go." She winked and Kurt just blushed a deep red.
"Mercedes!"
"So, you don't like him like that?"
"I mean—I no—w-w-well—kind of," Kurt stammered, he was never a good liar. "I mean, yea…" If it was possible for him to go an even deeper shade of red, he certainly did. "I just, he's my TEACHER. There's no way he's going to even look at me now that he knows I'm one of his students… even if he is just an assistant. What guy like that is going to take a chance on a high schooler, even one who IS 18?"
Mercedes sighed and took his hand from across the table. "Listen, Kurt. I know you're bummed out that you weren't able to graduate last year like you were supposed to with Finn and Rachel, but… I'm really glad you're here this year."
All Kurt could do was smile. Things with Karofsky the year before had put a huge dent in his plans. He had ended up transferring to Dalton Academy halfway through the year after a severe death threat from the jock. He was so behind in their curriculum he ended up having to transfer back this year simply because he couldn't keep up and hadn't made any real connections with any of the boys. Sure, they were all insanely dapper and kind, but the school was massive and ornate and just too "prissy" for Kurt. This meant he was almost an entire year behind and it forced him to repeat his senior year. If all had gone the way he dreamed he'd be in New York with his step-brother and best friend. "I know. It's just… hard."
"Don't look now, but here comes lover-boy!" Kurt just ducked his head when Blaine's eyes found him immediately in the crowded cafeteria.
Two weeks later and Kurt sat in the library a copy of "Catcher in the Rye" balanced on his knees as he tried to get comfortable in one of the oversized bean bag chairs they had installed the previous year. One of the perks about being a second-year senior was that the teachers didn't really seem to care what he did. He could easily escape to the library or the choir room at any point if he needed to. Most teachers weren't aware of what happened the year before and just assumed he was another "Lima Loser" in the making. He took full advantage of the lack of supervision, choosing to spend most of his day working on homework and reading. After all, he had done all of this work last year, he just hadn't been in the headspace to be able to pass all of the tests and absolutely bombed all of his finals.
"Kurt?" The senior put his book down hesitantly at the sound of that unbearably smooth voice. He had been actively trying to avoid Blaine since that first class. He still went to it because… Omigod who wouldn't want to stare at Blaine for 50 uninterrupted minutes of their day? But, he had conveniently ignored all texts, calls, and any possible one-on-one conversations. He just didn't want the embarrassment that was going to come from certain rejection. "What can I do for you Mr. Anderson?" Kurt's tone was clipped and short. He knew what was coming and he wanted as much dignity as possible.
"Hey, it's just Blaine." The curly-haired older man took a seat in a bean bag next to Kurt. Who gave him the right to smell that good? Kurt thought to himself as he shifted uncomfortably away. "I know this was weird. Seeing me here in school, I mean." Blaine reached up to run his fingers through his hair but sighed and stopped short, obviously trying not to disrupt the gel he had used that morning. "I just… I don't really see you as a student, Kurt."
That caught Kurt's attention. His head snapped up form his book quickly and he took a sharp breath, "You don't?"
"No."
"How do you see me?" The question was quite bold. Kurt wasn't used to making the first move or being daring in anyway. He guessed there was always a moment where you start being more in charge of your existence.
Blaine leaned forward, his lips just brushing against Kurt's ear. "I see you as the really sexy mechanic that I met before I even stepped foot in this building. The guy who saved me from having to get dug out of a ditch by the cops from faulty breaks." He pulled back and Kurt shivered. They weren't even touching, and somehow Blaine still was able to make Kurt unsteady. "I looked you up." Blaine shifted the conversation slightly and crossed his legs. Kurt just smirked, at least he wasn't the only one having some unfortunate physical reactions in the school library.
"What did you find out?"
"You should be a freshman in college right now." It wasn't a question.
"Well.. things happen…" Kurt sighed, "I wasn't really treated great because of the… ya know…"
"Gay thing? I get it, trust me. I have my own horror stories." Blaine laid what he hoped was a comforting hand on Kurt's knee.
"Yea.. the gay thing. Well, long story short, I ended up with a death threat, transferring schools, and then having to come back. I was super stressed out and even though I did all the classes… I just kind of bombed all the import things. So, here I am… a second-year senior. Every teacher in this place just thinks I'm a waste of space and another person that's going to flunk out and never make it out of Lima."
"I don't think that."
Kurt just smiled. "Well you're different aren't you?" He pushed himself up, threw his book into his bag, and walked out of the library luckily; leaving Blaine behind him.
"I met someone." The frankness of the words was what startled Burt out of his almost robotic routine. He set the burgers down on the table before turning to his son, questioning in his eyes.
"You aren't going to like him."
"Really, Kurt?"
The senior just rolled his eyes. "I know you, dad, and I know that you still think of me as a child and a high schooler even though I'm really not. I'm telling you that you aren't going to like him."
"Try me," Burt challenged. The last year had been difficult for them, and he'd be lying if he tried to say that their father-son relationship hadn't suffered because of it. "What's his name?"
"Blaine." Kurt blushed slightly as he took a burger off of the plate. "Blaine Anderson."
"How'd you meet?"
Kurt just blushed more deeply. "The garage. He came to get his car fixed before starting his work-study program."
"He knows you're still in high school?"
Kurt sighed, "Yea we kind of had to have that conversation, but he's okay with it. He understands what happened and it doesn't really worry him. He's only, like, a year a half older than me so it really isn't that crazy anyway. If we had met under normal circumstances we would have met while I was also in college."
Burt smiled at that. "I want you to be happy, kiddo. You had a rough year last year and I want you to just be yourself and be happy. If he makes you happy so be it. Can he come over for a Friday night dinner in the next few weeks?"
Kurt let his eyes fall down to the edge of his shirt, and he picked at the hem. "Well.. we aren't really… uhm." How as he going to put this? He and Blaine weren't really a secret, but they didn't want people at school to know either and bringing Blaine for dinner meant the relationship was going to somehow get back to McKinley, and that's the last thing either of them needed. "We aren't exactly open."
"Kurt!" His dad sounded displeased, and it just made Kurt focus on his shirt with more intensity. "I know you might be worried about your safety, but is a closeted relationship a good idea?"
Kurt took a deep breath. "We aren't closeted, dad, I promise. It's just… it's difficult with the school."
"Why? Does he not want people to know you're still in high school? Because you're 18 and if it wasn't for last year you'd be in college so if he's ashamed of your trauma and what you've been through he isn—"
Burt was cut off by his son suddenly shouting, "when I go to school I found out he's one of the teachers!"
"What?"
"He's an education major and he's assisting with teaching one of my AP classes as part of his credits for this semester. We didn't meet in school but we don't really want people in school to know. Okay?"
Burt just sighed and wrapped his son in a hug. "Okay. But, I still want to meet him." All Kurt could do was nod.
They should have known it was coming, really, it shouldn't have been a surprise. Neither of them were good at keeping their relationship a secret. They went for coffee to close to school, Blaine always found excuses as to why he couldn't grade Kurt's work, and Kurt often found himself hanging around the teachers' lounge after school so the two could walk to the parking lot together. So, it really shouldn't have shocked either of them when the rumors and whispers started. Kurt would walk down the hall and everyone would stop and stare, the cafeteria would silence when Blaine walked in, and the teachers' lounge was ripe with gossip about the supposed "illegal affair." Yet, when Kurt was called into Figgins office before 3rd period a few days before winter break he wasn't thinking anything of it… until he saw Blaine already sitting there, eyes trained on the floor.
"Mr. Hummel, take a seat." Kurt lowered himself carefully into the seat next to Blaine, who tensed up immediately and wouldn't even look at him. "It's come to my attention that there might be something inappropriate happening between you an Mr. Anderson."
"What?!" He tried to look at Blaine for help, but he just had a vice grip on the arms of his chair, looking intently at the same spot on the floor he had been looking at when Kurt had arrived.
"Mr. Hummel, I have to ask that you stay calm. We have it on good authority that there has been an ongoing relationship. Are you aware that in this school there is a policy against student/teacher relationships?" Kurt could only gape at him. Since when had the school cared about 'inappropriate' relationships? He could count on both times the number of relationships between staff and underage boys AND girls that had happened in his now 5 years at McKinley. Yet, somehow, here he was sitting in Figgins office getting all but reamed out about his relationship with someone that shouldn't be an issue.
"Principle Figgins," he stated, "With all due respect I am an 18-year-old who shouldn't even be here. It was YOUR decisions last year that prevented me from graduating." He took a deep breath knowing he was getting angry and he couldn't afford that. "We did not meet in the school and furthermore there have been DOZENS of actually inappropriate relationships and I fail to see what's different between Bla—Mr. Anderson and I besides your homophobia thinly veiled as concern for your students."
"Mr. Anderson?" The principle simply turned to Blaine and waited for his explanation to the rumors.
At this, Blaine looked up, his hazel eyes full of worry and tears. "Principle Figgins," he started obviously trying to save Kurt form whatever punishment the school wanted to inflict on him. "I'm the teacher in this situation. Yes, we met outside of school. I didn't even know he was a student here when we met, just that he was over the age of 18. But…" he took a sharp breath, obviously thinking about what he was about to say. "I'm the authority in this situation. I signed the contract with OSU and your school and I knew the clause about not starting relationships with students. I shouldn't have let it get this far." Blaine refused to turn and look at Kurt, knowing that the words would have cut the younger man like a knife.
"Are we done here?!" Kurt asked in disbelief. He didn't even get an answer before he stormed out of the office. Blaine simply looked at Figgins and nodded. "I'll take care of it."
"I'm sorry" Blaine mumbled into Kurt's skin a few days after their meeting with Figgins. Kurt had ignored his many texts and calls. The school had also transferred Kurt out of his class so seeing his boyfriend was nearly impossible if the younger man didn't want to talk. It took about a week for Kurt to show up on his doorstep and that had led to where they were now. Very naked and very blissed out in Blaine's one-bedroom apartment. "I'm so sorry," he felt the tears leaking out of his eyes. They obviously still had a lot to talk about.
"It's okay, B." Kurt sat up slightly, careful not to knock Blaine off of his chest. "I promise it's okay."
"No, it isn't. I should have fought for our relationship. Instead, I got scared and I just listened to what he was saying at that meeting."
Kurt sighed, "Blaine, look at me," he titled the older mans' head up until their eyes met. "This is your future. You're right to be scared about our relationship not being understood and it causing issues with your college. I was just—I was mad because—I mean-."
"Because of what happened last year?"
"Yea."
"I think we just need to reign it in at the school." Blaine cuddled closer to his boyfriend and sighed contently. "I'm more than happy to ignore you at school as if we don't even know each other as long as we can see each other here or at your house. I know your dad wants to spend more time with me."
"That sounds wonderful." Kurt leaned down to kiss Blaine softly. The sweet kiss turned hotter within a few minutes, and that boys took complete advantage of Kurt's late curfew on Saturday night.
As the weeks of the school year progressed, Kurt found that the rumors were dying down. The hallways had finally quieted about his and Blaine's romance and the school went back to the same general nonsense that he was used to. Slushies, locker slams, and more slushies were what greeted him most days, but he couldn't find it within himself to care anymore. He was almost done and he had Blaine (secretly) helping him through his everyday struggles. It was his step-brother that almost ruined everything for him.
Kurt was sitting in glee club looking at how to transfer from OSU to NYU because Blaine was looking at transferring to be closer to Kurt for the next semester. Blaine was an education major with a music minor, a great asset to have as a teacher near Broadway and of course, Kurt wanted to chase his dreams all the way to the stage. What Kurt wasn't expecting was for Finn to appear with Rachel by his side to visit the club and basically out him for having a boyfriend.
"Is he thinking of going to New York with you?" Rachel had stage-whispered to him while everyone was filing in for afternoon rehearsal. "I know he's probably got this figured out already but there's always room for you two at the loft!" Finn had just rolled his eyes. "She's' a little excited that you found someone, dude."
"Don't call me dude," Kurt muttered as he looked around and saw both Mercedes and Tina giving him quizzical glances. He sighed. "Can we not talk about this right now?" He hissed at his step-brother and best friend. "I don't want to have issues." They both just smiled at him.
"Burt told us." Rachel gave him a sad smile. "We can talk more at the house; we're staying for a few days before we go home.
It took approximately 2 seconds after club ended for Mercedes to drag Kurt off into a corner of the hallway to interrogate him, Tina running to catch up. "Kurt?"
"What?" He adjusted the strap of his messenger bag and avoided eye contact. How was he supposed to lie right to both of his friend's faces? He took a deep breath when Tina caught up and they both just stared at him expectantly. He had to lie; he didn't have a choice. Anyone knowing could potentially lead to his relationship being exposed again and that would ruin everything that he and Blaine had worked so hard for after the meeting with Figgins. "Rachel and Finn were just— they didn't know we broke up."
Mercedes eyes him carefully, trying to determine if he was lying. He felt himself flush under the gaze. "I promise, it there was something going on still I'd tell you."
"I'm sorry, Kurt." Tian piped up and placed a reassuring arm around him. "Breakups are hard and especially how yours happened. It's gotta sting and we won't bring it up again."
"Thanks guys." He hugged them both before starting down the hallway. "I gotta get home now though. There's only so many more family dinners left before graduation, right?"
What the girls didn't know wouldn't hurt them. He got into the car and dialed Blaine's number with ease. "Did you want to come for dinner and finally meet my step-brother and the infamous Rachel Berry?" He took Blaine's giggle as a yes.
"Kurt Hummel." Principle Figgins simply rolled his eyes as Kurt strutted up to receive his diploma and turn his tassel. "Kurt will be attending NYADA in New York on a full scholarship study musical theatre." The man sounded bored and frustrated with the fact that Kurt had been able to swing a full scholarship to a fancy New York school even with being held back a year.
That was the power of a great personal essay. His talent had gotten him into the school but, his heartwarming story of overcoming homophobia and finding someone to connect with and support him even in his struggle had gotten him enough money to pay in full for his four years.
Kurt jumped in the air and hugged Mercedes as they threw their red caps in the air, signifying they were free. "Finally!" Kurt yelled toward the sky, ignoring his cap as it fell a few rows forward and directly into Artie's lap. The other boy just laughed with the rest of the glee club members graduating and threw it back to a smiling Kurt.
Anyone looking at Kurt could tell the last several months had completely changed him. After the previous year and knowing he would be held back, Kurt had built up all of his walls. Even Mercedes hadn't been able to get through to him like she once could. After Figgins had said he couldn't see Blaine anymore the other students noticed a marks change. He was down on himself for about two weeks, unsure, flighty, and jumpy. But, as time wore on the rumors faded and Kurt slowly began to regain who he was as a person. No one heard about what they thought was his short-lived relationship with Blaine and they appreciated having their old friend back.
As the ceremony came to a close, Kurt bounded off the stage and immediately to his father, holding out his diploma cover proudly. Burt enveloped him in a hug, "there were days I really thought we might not get here." Kurt could only nod and respond with a small "me too." Then Burt stepped away and met Blaine's eyes across the auditorium. "I think there's someone else that would like to congratulate you."
"We have something planned after so that we don't have to be seen at the school. We were going to go to dinner and watch a movie at the apartment or something." Kurt looked away from his dad and blushed. His dad didn't need to know all of the details of what the weekend at Blaine's was going to entail. The man was already very kind with how much time he allowed his son to spend away from home and with his boyfriend. Yes, he was 18, but he still wanted to obey the few rules that Burt still had for him just out of respect.
As Kurt continued to make his way around the auditorium to be congratulated by friends and teachers he kept seeing Blaine out of the corner of his eye. The 20-year-old wasn't quite hovering but was close enough that Kurt considered it a risk. No one in the building but his father knew that the two were still dating. They had decided that night months ago that it was best to simply date in secret until after graduation so that Blaine could keep his squeaky-clean record and Kurt didn't have to worry about the additional rumors that his classmates were spreading.
"Hey." Blaine slid up to Kurt at the snack table a few minutes after he had said goodbye to Mercedes and Artie who were off to dinner with their respective families.
"We're still in the school," Kurt said warily as Blaine reached for the same cupcake as him, making it so their fingers briefly touched. He would never get tired of the electric sparks that seemed to fly at even the slightest touch of the fingertips.
"I know."
"You'll get in trouble."
Blaine just smirked, "no I won't." He laughed at Kurt's quizzical expression. "I graded my final paper last night and got my signature from Figgins this morning. I am officially no longer a teacher at McKinley High and no longer a student at OSU since my transfer got accepted last week…" he trailed off the take a bite of cupcake. "You are not a student anymore as of about 30 minutes ago."
That was all it took for Kurt to simply fling himself into Blaine's arms in a strong hug, almost knocking the shorter man over in his excitement. "Woah!"
"I love you." Kurt looked earnestly into Blaine's eyes as he uttered those 3 little words that he hadn't' dared speak out loud before.
"I love you too." Then Blaine kissed him, allowing the outside world to melt away, no longer fearful of what the people inside of the McKinley High School hallways might say.
A/N: I've spent a lot of time writing and tweaking this one. For some reason, it just seemed better in my head than it does on paper. But, I spent so much time on it I didn't want to just toss it aside. The next chapter is coming shortly, it's almost done. Then, I have a few requests that people have PMd me about doing, so that'll be fun!
