"Elizabeth murdered Margery."
Henry sighed as he wrapped an arm around Jane's shoulders and lay his head upon her shoulder while bringing hers to rest against his chest.
Even if their relationship had been more than a bit cool and distant as of late, how could he deny his grieving wife comfort? Especially when the life that had been lost had been their child?
Jane's eyes, normally so blue and lovely, were red and swollen, her cheeks blotchy, and she seemed to periodically bite her lower lip as she choked back sobs.
"My sweet little Margery…" she uttered mournfully, shaking her head. "My baby…"
"I know," Henry murmured soothingly, stroking her cheek tenderly. "It will take time."
"I want her punished," Jane said, her voice now filled with venom. "Elizabeth is a murderess and a poisoner. She killed a Princess of England, and she must face the penalty."
Henry was taken aback. Even if what his wife was saying was true, the culprit was her own sister. And she knew the penalty for treason, particularly for a poisoner…
But then his hesitation was quickly quashed when he recalled that Margery had not been the only child to fall prey to that deadly substance. Little Harry had as well…
And Geoffrey…
Henry silently thanked God above that the youngest twin had at least been spared. But that relief was also compounded by fear.
What if Elizabeth had accomplices? And what if one of those accomplices had reached Geoffrey's residence?
He tightened his hold on Jane as the terror set in. He could only pray that God saw fit to allow George's plan to succeed…
…
"Prince Henry is dead," George spoke solemnly as he watched the expressions of the other members of the king's privy council. Each man looked equally shocked and horrified. The only exceptions were the Seymour brothers. Thomas Seymour looked rather bored as though the news of the crown prince's death was of little concern. Edward Seymour on the other hand, being the shrewder of the brothers, had composed his face into a look of grief, but George could detect a twinkle of triumph in his eye.
George frowned. Had they had some involvement?
Queen Jane seemed certain that her sister Elizabeth had been involved, and Princess Elizabeth's governess Kat Ashley had had the guards seize Lady Catherine Brandon following the death of Princess Margery. Could the Seymour brothers, or at least Edward, have also played a part in the plot?
It certainly wouldn't surprise George if they had. After all, it had only been a stroke of luck that Elizabeth had not eaten the poisoned cake that had taken her sister's life. Surely the Seymours had intended to kill her rather than their niece.
That was it; the Seymours knew Jane's son and daughter would forever be behind Anne's children in the line of succession. Mary was a bastard now married off to a duke in Bavaria, with no hope of ever being restored to the rank of princess, so she was of no concern to them. Harry had been the heir, followed by Geoffrey, and then of course came Elizabeth.
But if the three elder children were dead, Edward would become the future king and Margery the only remaining English princess.
They stood to gain the most from the deaths, so naturally they would have the motive.
But George knew he must have more proof. He might still be the king's former brother-in-law and one of the highest peers of the realm being a duke, but to accuse the current queen's brothers without sufficient proof would be unwise.
That was when the plan had taken form in his mind.
"Gentlemen," George silenced the murmurs of the other councilors. "It is clear to me that Prince Geoffrey and Prince Edward may also be in great danger, for the poisoner or poisoners might next attempt to harm them as well. So, I have sent word to have Geoffrey removed to Hever Castle, the ancestral home of my family to better conceal his whereabouts, and Edward will be brought here to court. This will ensure his safety, and no doubt alleviate the queen's fears."
Edward seemed to look particularly intrigued at this bit of information.
"I agree with Wiltshire," he said with a smile. "Prince Geoffrey will now be the king's heir, so naturally he will likely be the assassin's next point of focus. As Princess Elizabeth is already here, she will be guarded carefully, and the murderer I am sure will not be so foolish as to attack here at court again. So Prince Edward will be safe as well."
George fought the urge to smirk. The trap was set.
…
"I have sent word to Prince Geoffrey's residence," George said softly. "He will be here soon."
"Good," Henry sighed. "He will be devastated when he hears the news if he has not heard so already. Far better for him if he is here with his family."
With that, the king waved his former brother-in-law away, to which the duke nodded and departed, leaving his king alone with his thoughts.
Henry's heart ached as he thought of the pain Geoffrey would no doubt feel. He would now be the heir as the eldest remaining son, nevertheless a crown was a poor consolation in comparison to what he had lost; his twin brother, with whom he had grown up. Though they had led separate lives the last few years, no one who witnessed their interactions could ever deny that the pair were as close as two siblings could possibly be. And now, Geoffrey would never see his brother in this life again. All because of a traitor who cared not for the suffering they had caused.
A wave of rage washed over the king as he thought of his wife's words. If indeed, Elizabeth Seymour had played a role in all of this, she would pay dearly.
All of those involved in this heinous act would pay. He would make sure of it.
